Checkered Past, the new block on Adult Swim devoted to classic Cartoon Network shows, is an interesting launch, especially given it means starting the adult-focused channel at the new time of 5pm. But is this nostalgia trip a good thing, or is it just speeding up the end of Cartoon Network? I take a look at the challenges facing both sides of the channel, explore the impacts of the new timeslot and the new block's programming, and explore if Cartoon Network being taken over by Adult Swim like this is a sign of the much-loved kids' TV channel dying. I also ask what the launch means for future investment (or lack thereof) in both channels, and whether Adult Swim airing Cartoon Network shows through Checkered Past is really the best way for these Warner Bros. Discovery brands to showcase the best of animation.

Well, let's be honest. Cartoon Network is no longer the network that everyone can watch without having to go through 15 reruns a week. I mean, say what you want about Adult Swim, but at least it's giving new shows a chance. Also, the Cartoonito block isn't really faring well, either. So, it's time to say goodbye to Cartoon Network and hello to the Adult Swim network that has been gearing up for several years now. I'm serious! Cartoon Network's lack of creativity and entertainment made the people behind the scenes want to give Adult Swim a longer runtime. Checkered Past may not last long because retro doesn't rate, but Adult Swim can always make new programming that will replace it, and that will turn everything around for Adult Swim. It's too late for Cartoon Network.

I made a curated tv channel I run to twitch 24/7. It basically airs all the best shows from CN, interspaced with old bumps and funny/old commercials. It's a weekly schedule, so the show you see on at a given time will come back around, but the episodes themselves are randomized. Even runs adult swim, with anime over the weekend. Also has a saturday morning OLD cartoon block. Popeye, The old hana barbera scooby doo ripoffs. And even a sunday afternoon toonami block. It can be a bit iffy at times. Sometimes it likes to desync or break and I have to reload it manually, but it's infrequent enough that it's more than watchable. Maybe once a week it'll have an issue.

Let's be real, most kids don't even watch tv anymore. They get most of their entertainment on the internet from places like streaming services, tiktok or youtube. The people who been tuning in apparently have been millennials and older gen Z for Adult Swim and the current push by the studio is to cater towards the demographic who are actually watching the network. Adult swim has been doing great, new shows like Unicorn warriors eternal and the new Superman have been a success and AS have been producing animated movies from their older shows Unfortunately things look grim for most childrens television networks as they started just airing new cartoons on streaming services where kids are more likely to watch them on.

The Checkered Past block being on Adult Swim and not Cartoon Network is really concerning. I'm really disappointed that CN has been dropping the ball on content. Even back in the early 2010s, they had so much interesting variety with the stuff they had on the network. Now, all of that is barely seen on the network or is getting dumped onto Adult Swim. I think Adult Swim is great, but I really dislike how it feels like the execs are putting less care into CN. It's even more apparent with the Cartoonito block taking dominance in the mornings, as well. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the channel becomes Adult Swim. I like how they're going for nostalgia, but my main concern is the start time and shows. Why are you starting an ADULT programming block at 5pm? Kids are still up and they might want to actually watch CN'S stuff, except they can't. As for Checkered Past, will they add more shows to the block if it succeeds in the ratings? Or will they expand the block?
As for Cartoon Network premieres, the only timeslot they will have for those will (most likely) be Saturdays or Sundays at 9am or 10am, which is still pretty good timeslots, if you ask me. But you also want to have premieres on weeknights too during the school year. But here's the problem: Checkered Past takes up the original "primetime" slots they had before Adult Swim's expansion to 5pm. Only having one or two premiere/new episode timeslots will definitely hurt the network's goal of younger audience expansion. Long story short: Checkered Past will hurt Cartoon Network, not only as a programming block, but a network in general, as they are trying to appeal to too many audiences.

Adult Swim taking over Cartoon Network is the best thing to happen to the channel because of one simple fact: Adult Swim lets shows cook. Adult Swim’s first show ever “Home Movies” was previously cancelled just 5 episodes in on their previous channel UPN, but Adult Swim saw potential and bought the rights to the unaired episodes, and it’s was so successful they got greenlit for more seasons. Adult Swim gave Family Guy a second chance when Fox wouldn’t, same with Futurama. Adult Swim gave Samurai Jack proper closure when CN wouldn’t. Unicorn and My Adventures with Superman moving to Adult Swim has made their viewerships skyrocket, assuring they won’t suffer the same fate many other shows on CN did. Hell, Adult Swim saved Toonami when CN ran it into the ground.
Adult Swim is unhinged and experiments with anything so long as it makes for an interesting viewing experience. If anyone is worthy of running Cartoon Network, it’s those crazy bastards at William Street. Checkered Past is proof that they know what the soul of Cartoon Network is, and will do everything to keep that soul alive.

    • @benzj
      @benzj  Рік тому +3

I think you make a great point, but in this case, I don't think the soul works well without the body. I don't feel picking CN's most broadly accepted past hits is, in itself, an indication that Adult Swim has any more of an idea about Cartoon Network than Cartoon Network itself does -- if that were true, the 30th anniversary celebrations last year would've been similar cause for optimism (and I feel it would've been unfounded there too). I'd be more convinced if Checkered Past started running a broader array of CN's archive, but there's no current indications that's the plan (and even if it were, the limited success of similar blocks elsewhere give me reasons to cast doubt on the longevity of that effort).
And in any case, it's all still reheating leftovers at the end of the day; doing nothing to fix Cartoon Network's current troubles or future problems. I don't think Adult Swim taking "saving CN" on as a peripheral task (as much as it already is one for head Michael Ouweleen) would be a beneficial thing for either side of the channel space, as it divides up the efforts over too many priorities.

It's particularly strange how people like Ouweleen (who was present as a creative director at the time of the Checkered Past series' original run) and the folks running CN/AS are letting their originality slip, even to the point of bringing over a series which - for intents and purposes - has existed since 2020 in the rest of the world, and _that_ being its only new product for CN this year.
5pm is an insane hour to start Adult Swim in. Most US kids haven't had dinner by then, and prime time programming is normally past 8pm! How many shows that CN used to air would be considered adult today, simply because the network was experimental in its ideas and trusted its creators? The answer is _"a lot of them"!_ It doesn't help that (HBO) Max keeps pulling animated shows from their streaming service regardless if they fit the demographic of CN or not.

The shows that Cartoon Network has been airing the past several years have been a major turnoff; and its not just them--Nickelodeon and Disney are on the bandwagon as well. Nostalgia is what brings in the ratings for networks like this. It's worth noting that Adult swim is a sister channel to TBS and would become completely redundant and pointless if it became its own channel.
With cartoonito there simply isnt anywhere near enough investment in content for it to even remotely consider becoming its own channel any time soon.. and even if it somehow did it would be a similar redundancy situation.. The reason Adult Swim hasn't suffered as much as CN in the long run I feel is just because the schedule has stayed pretty consistant and healthy.
CN's schedule for a good 5 years was just hot garbage, too many reruns of the same 3 shows, poor timeslots for new episodes and premieres, poor advertising for new shows, a lack of fun identity etc.
Adult Swim though, oh my god, they are consistantly good. They've been consistantly good for as long as I can remember.
The identity has stayed consistant, they always promote their shows well and give consistant timeslots, it has personality etc.

@@mart5610 I'm comparing early 2010's CN to the LATE 2000's, not the early-mid 2000's. The late 90's to early-mid 2000's were better than any other period, but I'm specifically referring to late 2000's CN, the time Re-Animated became Out Of Jimmy's Head, Fridays got replaced by Fried Dynamite, Adult Swim became 7 nights a week, TOM 4 led to the end of Toonami on CN even tho the block returned on Adult Swim in 2012, many long time originals ending around the time, CN Real becoming greenlit, etc.
Chowder, Flapjack, Secret Saturdays, Ben 10: Alien Force, etc. were there, and of course Total Drama which was the only good Canadian import (cuz the majority of the Canadian imports were mediocre), but those weren't enough, and neither of those compare to the early 2010's programming in quality like Adventure Time, Regular Show, Gumball, Steven Universe, etc. and let's not forget, even tho many of these were cancelled too soon, the early 2010's still gave us Young Justice, Sym-Bionic Titan, Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated, Generator Rex, Cartoon Planet (for classics), etc. and even The Looney Tunes Show and MAD were underrated imo. Even if some live-action shows ran 'til the early 2010's, but there was already live-action on CN since the mid 2000's before Re-Animated became the first ever live-action original produced by CN, and we know what that became. and that's your opinion, there's so many other Cartoon Network years in the 2000's that were controversial by multiple generations, it's an endless cycle.
There were controversial years as early as 2004/2005 (Toonami being moved to Saturday nights in place of Miguzi; the first live-action movies airing before Re-Animated which became Out Of Jimmy's Head, or hell, even the debuting originals of 2005 & 2006 like Camp Lazlo, Juniper Lee, My Gym Partner's A Monkey, or Squirrel Boy not holding up to the original Cartoon Cartoons from the 90's to earlier 2000's (which don't even hold up to the early 2010's originals like Adventure Time or Regular Show either). But there were way more positives than that during the City era of course which we're all aware of.
I'm sorry, but each year got worse throughout the late 2000's, while each year got better throughout the early 2010's with the exception of how the action shows were treated due to lack of toy sales/merchandise. It wasn't 'til Teen Titans Go! took over throughout the mid 2010's that led to another downfall, including other reboots being produced as well like PPG (2016), Ben 10 (2017), or Total DramaRama.

I feel like what could be a good approach is for them to treat Checkered Past like a seperate entity. It would still be part of adult swim, but maybe throughout the block, instead of the as logo, it's the Checkered Past logo at the bottom of the screen. Instead of it being treated just as a nostalgia block, it could be presented also more like a family block. Something where people who watched CN are parents now can show it to their kids. The AS ads could be fewer, and be more appropriate that a kid could watch. Basically, Checkered Past could be "middle ground" for before the more "adult" shows come on. Then, revivals of these shows could maybe even come on it, and maybe after that it could expand with original content.

More adults and teens have watched Cartoon Network in the past. It would make more sense to create shows that appeal to everyone on the main platform of Cartoon Network. It at least gives more variety to Adult Swim outside of stoner humor or Rick and Morty. But CN has a lack of shows that have staying power for large multi generational audiences. It feels like Adult Swim may gain that kind of staying power. With shows like My Adventures with Superman, Smiling Friends, Unicorn Warriors Eternal, Primal, Tuca and Berdie, and possibly other shows to come. All of those shows have brought variety to the network of Adult Swim. There have been variety on the channel before. tv channel that aired old Hanna-Barbera cartoons long before Boomerang was a thing and I loved that channel.
I was watching Where are you Scooby-Doo, Heckle & Jeckle, Laugh-A-Lympics, and The Flintstones
along with newer shows on other channels like The Smurfs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Inspector Gadget, Garfield & Friends,
and The Real Ghostbusters. Plus I watched Rocky & Bullwinkle, The Jetsons, and the Bugs Bunny & Tweety show which my dad grew up with as well.
Remakes aren't a bad thing except for Disney movies. I watched a newer version of Mighty Mouse when I was a kid and the original
Mighty Mouse used to be shorts from the 40's until the early 60's. I grew up with the original DuckTales and hated the DuckTales remake
but I know a lot of people loved it and at least it introduced a new generation to some of the Disney Afternoon characters I grew up with like
Kit Cloudkicker from TaleSpin and Darkwing Duck in one episode. Personally when Cartoon Network was still new when I was in middle school

Checkered Past is a good idea but it shouldn't be ALL the channel relies on! I have no idea what the channel's management from 2014 onwards has been thinking, but doubling down on Teen Titans GO! despite the bad press it's been getting has CLEARLY been BACKFIRING! Calling it "Your new favorite show" at one point was just INSULTING! It was like if Kids WB, despite Da Boom Crew's low viewership, started giving it more timeslots, promoted it to death and called it "Your new favorite show" back when it was new! However, Kids WB were smart, saw that show's low ratings and axed it just 4 episodes in! Cartoon Network becoming more and more of a Teen Titans GO! channel is what REALLY hurt the channel, playing it "safe" is actually dangerous! It shows you're afraid to try ANYTHING new, you forget how the channel got to where it is today and I wouldn't be surprised if your channel SHUTS DOWN by the end of the decade! Disney are prospering by giving us new shows like Kiff and Hailey's On It, while Nick are messing up by rebooting FoP for the 50th time and tossing that new Planet Ruby show to the wayside, Rock, Paper, Scissors DOES show there's SOME traces of trying! Cartoon Network on the other hand: what do they have in the pipeline? BESIDES the new Gumball seasons and that new PPG series? Cartoon Network either needs to wake up and pick up new shows, AND FINALLY AXE TTG!, or possibly go off the air, taking Adult Swim with it, by the end of 2026!

However, to me it will most likely be bad for the channel in the long run because while they don’t have to worry about making money for old shows that are already done and animated, they still have to make money for the new shows they put out (My adventures with superman being one example) and, let me tell you a secret. I disagree.
Sure, Checkered Past probably isn't going to save the ratings decline, and I'm not excited about an age of reboots, but there's a bit here that I can't get on board with too.
I think that the fact that Infinity Train and Unicorn Warriors Eternal are now considered "adult" content, along with Checkered Past airing on "adult" swim is actually kind of destroying the stigma about children's media, specifically animation. This applies to Adventure Time and Villainous as well.
I don't think it's inherently a bad thing to focus on adult animation either. So many shows in the past have been restricted and censored for ridiculous reasons. It'd be nice to have some creative freedom come out of these shows. Animation is more of an adult medium in Japan. In America, most of our adult animation is just Family Guy clones. That really needs to change.
Artistically speaking, I actually think this is a good sign. My only major problem with cartoon network/adult swim is that they have a bit of a sexism problem when it comes to rejecting female-oriented shows (that's probably why we haven't heard much from Invincible Girl, and why Unicorn Warriors Eternal and YOLO haven't been renewed yet).
I also strongly disagree with your praise towards Nickelodeon. Paramount has literally stated that they're not taking animation as seriously, and that they plan on making adaptations exclusively rather than original content. Not really a fan of their current lineup either, quality-wise. Disney's previous CEO also stated he doesn't take animation that seriously either.
At least Michael Ouweleen cares about the art, and has actually worked in that field before. I actually agree with that quote he made that you displayed. He also stated that he's going to try to make cartoon network more of an "animation network" instead of a "kids network" because that's what it was originally intended to be. Which is true.
To be honest, I would not at all be against Cartoon Network becoming aimed at an older demographic, so long as they still exclusively air cartoons and anime. I really don't like how Acme Night airs live action content either. I can sort of understand comic-book adaptations, but Wipeout and Harry Potter don't need to be on this channel. The Eric Andre Show should honestly be a Max-exclusive rather than an adult swim series.
Edit: Checkered Past actually DID turn out to be a smart move. The ratings of the network got better.

Benzie, this is a great summary of what’s currently going on with Cartoon Network. The channel isn’t connecting with kids these days, and WB-D isn’t investing much in it anymore.
I would love to know what the goals are for Checkered Past. If it does well, doesn’t it just take more hours away from CN?
I’ve long thought that the only reason Adult Swim doesn’t go 24/7 is a lack of long-running half-hour series (that they own). But presenting old CN series as part of Adult Swim for multiple hours a day might do the trick…

Back when Adult Swim had their online /streams/ content, I imagined they could use that to fill daytime airspace in a brand-appropriate (and probably cheap) way -- obviously that's gone now though. I think it just boils down to them not really having anything appropriate to air in the airtime, but investing into AS shows that clear standards and practices as appropriate for, say, noontime might just risk diluting the brand further.
Thank you for watching this video!

Let's call a spade a spade. We can not blame the past decade of Cartoon Network for there problems any more. It is easy, but the bigger problem is that kids they pushed hard to get just do not watch broadcast TV any more. They are the start of the streaming generation and have little reason to do so.

This a good block, but how long is it going to last? and on Saturdays they should have put unicorn warriors eternal or my adventures with superman instead of KOTH, I mean, it's too EARLY to broadcast that series and those other 2 series could have been a better option for 5pm to 7pm

You also need to consider adult swim new 2 tv channels ( kinda new). Adult Swim Mexico and Adult Swim South America. I really think Warner Discover is trying to get in the TVs of their real audience, nostalgic adults. If there is something mexicans and south americans were always asking to Pablo Zuccarino (warner's latinamerica general manager) in every interview was, can we get the "City Era" back? The already forgot about Tooncast, and Cartoon network doesn't seem to have too much attention either. And it's all related, kids today don't watch tv, or cartoons, they watch youtubers, streamers, youtube animations, funny videos, tiktok, gameplays. It's only natural they would focus on the 90s adults, they feel nostalgic and overwhelmed about how life is going on right now.

With a large enough audience it should have benefits for later use - potentially being aired on a new channel for future cartoons. I would consider this to be a testing ground to get use to how cartoons used to be aired back in the 90s and 2000s. I somewhat have a fear of it being canceled though out of all honesty.

I will forever be team Cartoon Network but im afraid the channel wont be around within the next 5 years or so. Most of us that Checkerd Past is catered too is the last of a generation who would come home from school and actually sit and watch tv. There was no streaming platforms, big social media booms, touch screen devices (besides the Nintendo DS) or anything of that nature. Cable TV was king back then.
Kids who was born in the late 90s and grew up in the early 2000s was the last of that "prehistoric" generation. The current generation are born with the technology that consist of smart phones, streaming platforms, and vast social media to scroll through. Cartoonito is geared to pre schoolers and young kids who may have parents (from our generation) who choose to keep things old fashioned. Most of us are in the beginning stages of adult hood.
The shows that we grew up with is either being aired on adult swim, streaming where we fan afford it as adults, or they are being renewed or rebooted in ways that will allow us to relate to. Look at icarly, and fiona and cake, those shows are tv 14 and are meants to be for the ones who grew up watching it. Same thing with the Samurai Jack final season.
I think Cartoon Network realizes that the kids who grew up during their prime years are grown. We were their prime audience. We were their market and they know that the kids and teens of today caters to a vast source of media. Weather thats youtube kids, 60 second tiktoks, anime, or Netflix

First off I absolutely understand why you have the mindset that cartoon network is dying and checked past being an adult swim block isint going to help matters however this mindset is VERY flawed.
1 As sad as it is cartoon network has been all but dead since its short lived live action block was created. Even to this day they mostly either air Teen Titans go which is just a very bad show and reruns of Gumball. Gumball is great don't get me wrong and kids at least a few years ago definitely liked go but that's mostly all the network has to offer sure they are half heartedly pushing the Tiny toons reboot and id be lying if I said other shows like Craig and Regular show never got aired but it's still uncommon. The hard fact is cartoon network simply doesn't care about live tv anymore and their refusal to pickup new shows or at least show older ones themselves is kinda the problem which leads into...
2 Adult swim is the ONLY reason these shows are airing as is. CN itself clearly don't care and in fact have out right insulted older creators like Craig McCracken and Maxwell Atoms among others meanwhile Adult Swim knows now is the perfect time to capitalise on people my age nostalgia honestly without checkerd Past and Impractical Jokers there really isn't any reason for me to watch live tv anymore and I'm sure many would agree. Plus it's not like these shows can't be watched by kids specially today I seriously doubt a parent who most likely grew up watching these shows is going to not allow them just because their "technically" on adult swim if anything because the block airs right after school or close to it's likely new kids are actually going to see the shows for the first time point is why does it really matter if CN specifically falls since adult swim is more than willing to air family content?

@@robertjohnson2916 The only reasons why most Cable stations are still around is because old people still use it and also the fact that people still watch sports on cable tv as well but that is also slowly declining. Most popular shows that are talked about now are only available through streaming or that the majority of people watch it on streaming next day (Max and Hulu does this). Most of CN now is just reruns and when they make a new show it either becomes a max original or dumped on adult swim.

I was watching another video that had a collection of all the bumps Checkered Past had (which are cool in their own right) and a lot of people in the comments were saying how soulless the whole thing was. After watching this video, I can see where they were coming from now.
"We have no ambition for new shows so let's just play off everyone's nostalgia again and again." Sure, it's nice they're airing the old stuff again, but if I REALLY wanted to see them again, what's to stop me from watching these shows off Hulu or even youtube? Hell, I think I even have a DVD somewhere with a few seasons of Ed Edd 'n Eddy on it!

I don't understand why people are concerned with Checkered Past being on Adult Swim. It's literally just them airing old cartoons for 2 hours before King of The Hill for mostly nostalgia. The fact that it's at 5pm, allows for parents to show their kids some of the classics while reliving their own childhood.

The studio building already permanently closed, so I think it's safe to say that Cartoon Network Studios will never create another original cartoon again, and once the remaining cartoons have ended, that'll be the end of Cartoon Network as a whole permanently. It will only exist as a brand, but eventually, that too will cease to exist, not just because cable is finally dying, but because of the lack of worker's rights in the studios. That's why Cartoon Network is becoming shorter and shorter. It's actively losing the competition, and they know this. They're finally going to lose funding, meaning that thousands will lose their income and will have to migrate elsewhere. All of this was because of Warner Bros merging with Discovery. This merger should never have happened, and the executives REGRET merging with Discovery, because I think Discovery is taking advantage of Warner Bros by shrinking their content just to save money for themselves, leaving nothing for the latter. All of this is a tax write off just so they would hoarde money from other people. Cartoon Network has entered a dark era, one that would be the end of them once and for all, all because of the merger. Things are looking extremely bleak, and there is no light and the end of this tunnel. There is no solution. There is no fixing things. We just need to accept that this is our reality. Besides, everything must come to an end eventually, even if it's a sad one.
