Very good video and I'm going to make one very shortly that's for sure! One important note here: "You can use whatever Tyvek paper you have". Tyvek is a brand name and it's what we call a "House Wrap". The correct thing to say is "You can use whatever House Wrap you have". Or can you? The answer is no. Not all house wraps are made the same. Tyvek is a single layer fabric with fibers in a criss-cross partern that makes it VERY puncture and tear resistant. Some others are a laminate of TWO sheets that split over time. And also, NOT using a criss-cross fibre patern. So stick to Tyvek as much as possible or make sure the other brand you're using has the same criss-croos fibre patern. Remember, you are NOT using that material for its primary intended use, therefore it'll be more prone to failure. So go for Tyvek or the same type. Not the others... On this, I'm going to cut a piece of the roll I have so I can make one of those Robert's chair-groundsheet!
Glad you liked it and found it useful and good luck with your new chairs and making your own groundsheets. A bit difficult to get your hands on them as they are out of stock at most retailers and also on their own website! Where did you found your Helinox chairs?
I did that for my REI chair. Used some ultralight tarp material, then glued aluminum sheet circles with silicone caulk to the abrasion points. Added 25 grams to the chair to 16.5 oz pack weight. I sewed mine. Absolute (voice of experience) necessity: after the first corner, keep refitting the work to the chair. Do not try to measure and finish all at once... 😎 I know I'm not good enough!
Thought this was a great idea. Picked up a Tyvek mailer and tried it out. Learned that while Tyvek is highly tear-resistant, it is not indestructible. Took it to the front yard (grass) for a test set and immediately ripped off one of the corners. Back tot he drawing board. (I weigh 186 lbs.)
Thanks for feedback, strange your having problems. I’m almost 172 and have no problems an nor has my friends. All comes down to the fit and and I guess and how you cut it. Duct tape also have different qualities so sometimes difficult to compare. The ones I made are still going strong.
Thanks 😊 and yep, a great choice for an ultra light option and wish you all the luck making your own. Any tyvek should do the job but of course the thicker the stronger…but also heavier. Good luck 👍🏻
good idea if would work, I've used it during a bike-pack overnight trip on hard surface-dirt in the camp ground, and it was ok, then I've tried it on a back pack overnighter in Michigan's Northdunes trail and won't work for sand, the tyvek will hold but the gorilla tape will stretch and get undone because of the stress due to legs wanted to dig into the sand and the mid portion staying on the top of the sand.
Thanks for getting back to me on this, don’t use it much myself for the added weight so glad you share your experience. My thoughts is that this type of solution works most of the time but also can’t withstand the wear and tear of use in the long run. The original or the chair buddies on the other hand will, so maybe they are the better choice. 🤷🏼♂️ Some improvements could also possibly be made in this so, I’ll see if I could spend some time looking into it.
I saw another UA-camr that used tarp for a similar build. My thought was, why not use Tykek to make it even lighter. You’ve done it! What is that 80 year old ruler you have? That’s pretty nice.
Thanks glad you like them 🙂 and the Tyvek I bought from Extremtextil.de so not from Sweden, bought it mainly to make a footprint (that I never used😄) and had some material left I made a couple of these groundsheets for the Helinox. If you’re buying I recommend to buy one slightly thicker than I did and presented in the episode… some have said it’s not very durable. For me it’s ok, but I’m not a big guy. 🤷🏼♂️
Thanks, and no actually! Not really… used it a couple of times with no problem but not really that soft and no sand. Took the decision not worth the added weight and if any problems with the chair sinking I try to find another spot or use the sitpad. But if you really want to make it and use it like always and on soft ground I recommend a slightly thicker Tyvek than the one I used. Should be fine 🙂 good luck.
@@roberthammenrudh Hej igen!

Such a clever idea, Robert. Well done for sharing this. Get well soon.
🇦🇺 Brilliant! This will save weight and money. Cheers.
Thanks Kurt 😊 and yep, cheap and easy to make!!
Use a spoon and hard surface to smooth the tape and remove the air bubbles. This adds many times the strength. From a museum archivist.
Good tip 👍🏻
Thanks for this Robert. I ordered 2 of the chairs today. I will now be making 2 bases for them.

Haha yep…totally agree, it’s even difficult when using only tape…. Can imagine it’s even more difficult to get a perfect fit when sewing 😄
Amazing thanks for sharing!!
Cool idea! 😎

Cool i thought there must be a UA-cam video for something like this. Good one!!

Yep tyvek is light and strong enough 🙂👍🏻 and the ruler is like an old one I found 🤷🏼♂️😄 use it all the time!
The tarp I used was lighter than the Tyvek, and cheaper.
Hi Robert. Where did you buy Tyvek in Sweden? Any tips? Thanks for great videos.

great video. Have you tried it on soft soil or sand? Snow and frozen ground is pretty hard.

Have you tried wrapping the base on the retracted chair?will it function well as the chair's sack? It can save weight if you leave the sack at home
Well i don’t use the sack/bag for the chair and the base is wrapped around and ell is secured using a Velcro strap.
@@roberthammenrudh that's great. Thank you for this idea and the effort to show us how to do it, really appreciate it!
Hej Robert!
