It was because so many children died of illness or various other causes that the average got dragged down. They learned the art of corporate and militant action. They learned to refuse. At first, they just grunted their refusal. But then, on an historic day, which is commemorated by my species and fully documented in the sacred scrolls, there came Vimuville. He did not grunt. He articulated. man, the 90s were a hell of a drug
in all seriousness, I do have my own theory about what's going on. It's possible that the mechanic worked for a chemical company that was developing some sort of steroid, presumably to increase growth of cattle due to the beef industry being so prominent in Australia. When the steroid didn't work/did work but had unintended side effects, the chemical company was bought by a fitness corporation that repurposed the chemical plant to manufacture the supplement. Either the supplement was designed from the previous steroid or contaminated by half-assed sanitization of the facility and equipment (as is par for the course with any corporation), to screw with the effects of the supplement. Chances are once the formula was complete the mechanic who was working at the chemical plant (and by extension developed genetic damage from chemical exposure due to lax safety culture at the plant) to develop it was let go due to corporate downsizing and he sabotaged the formula by snatching the stabilizing compound on the way out.
I think the "supplement" is more of a hyper-steroid than an infectious pathogen, and causes existing bacteria and other cells in the body to mutate rapidly. this sort of explains the varied responses that are displayed by the victims, with odd growths in some and biological matter acting independent of the main body in others. The mutations would compound and cause a runaway effect as the genetic aberrations building up until the cells just fall apart.

    • @notsae66

Isn't it heavily implied he doesn't actually generate any cells but simply steal them from others. He doesn't have regeneration, he just shifts his mass around and assimilates more cells; that's kinda why he needs to restore his "biomass" by eating people.

Honestly, that's the kinda thing we basically have to chalk up to game limitations, much like his inability to swim is (contrary to popular belief) not because water somehow harms him but because the developers just didn't want to program that and thought it didn't fit the gameplay style and the fact that he can retake the shape of anyone he's consumed, not just the last one. Some of the abilities he has couldn't be displayed in the game because their simply aren't enough buttons and so on, like the fact that (unlike Heller) Mercer was capable of freeform shapeshifting and creating his own new weapons (Heller needed to consume existing genes to adapt himself, Mercer just came up with them seemingly in the fly) and that he can (as the second game showed) deliberately infect others. He is essentially a ball of slime in the shape of a human being, taking in more meat to make into slime to keep himself together when he loses existing slime.
As for the super cells... maybe? He does seem to be incredibly dense in the literal sense. I don't know how much energy that would take, but eating entire human beings by the dozens seems like it would supply a good bit.
