Lang Lang is showman, Li Yundi is a pianist. in this piece, Lang's play like a unleashed horse running rush into a miserable forest. Li Yundi's play in this piece is so touching, amazing feeling in heart.
Obviously you have not listened to Lang Lang's Chopin piano concertos No.1 and No.2, neither have you heard him perform on stage. Nor you are aware of his journey to Germany to trace Bach's steps so that he could trust himself to perform Goldberg Variations.
Yundi’s playing can touch your heart and make ripples which is so romantic and elegant. Your mind is dancing with his music and blowing away with fantastic imaginations. Yundi’s music can make people to love classic music even they never hear them before. It is so impressive.
+vienn I've got goosebumps when he started... I agree with +domemvs Lang Lang has no feeling at all... You can see Yundi Li playing in the Chopin competition and you will see how he feels what he is playing... I don't think there is a purer feeling than that one...
+vienn Yes, Li Yundi has much more emotion in his playing. Brought me tears too. Lang Lang is hitting the keys so fast and hard that it seems like he is in a hurry to go. He has no emotion in his playing. Sounds more like he just tries to get from the beginning to the end. He can play fast, alright, but it's not enough.
Yundi Li needs a better agent. Also his reputation as a Chopin "specialist" is making him famous at the beginning of his career but limiting his potential to reach the next stage.
Both are skill-wise, or say technically perfect. But for musical interpretation Yundi WAS definitely better. But this was 6~7 years ago. Recently Lang Lang has also been growing a lot on the insight of musical interpretation part. One can easily tell the difference of how much emotion in Lang Lang's recent plays from the same piece that he played 6 years ago. For sure that Yundi has always been great since 2000 on his musical understandings, especially for Chopin's pieces. Well now at 2020 I would say Lang Lang is catching up at the same level, at least not like this comparison many years ago that we can easily tell who was better at the time.
Thank you for posting this comment! It helps me understand them. It's so easy to choose who to listen to just based on a single performance, but you remind me that you should always be careful doing that. Lang Lang has for example made the best performance I've ever heard of Für Elise, and when I check it now I see that the video is pretty new, so I guess that he is older and has been working a lot with his interpretation skills.
Yundi Li won the prestigious 2000 International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. He was 18, the youngest winner ever of this Chopin competition.
I'm not a pianist but I agree with you, Yundi is on a very special level, a kind of Horowitz level... A very unique personality artist artistry level. Something uncommon.
Yundi’s lyricism and interpretation of Chopin is beyond comparison. I tend to view Lang Lang’s playing as more commercial and a bit acrobatic. I first heard Lang Lang when he was not quite known in L.A. and liked his playing. He became commercial. Yundi’ s playing is musical.
Lang Lang is just speed. He did have a lot of musical touch though. I think Lang Lang kind of sped through the beginning. Yundi Li played the beginning very fast too, but it was more elegant and flowing, like all of Yundi's pieces.
just as i thought also... Lang too rushed in part 1, but excellent excellent part 2 and part 3. Yundi fast but more clear part 1 (like Horowitz), just ok part 2 , part 3 fell apart (overdid himself) . Lang excellent in part 3 in contrast to his part 1.
I alwalys compare Yundi li with Chopin, and Lang Lang with Franz Liszt, based on their performances noutes, and their compositions. Of course i always prefers Chopin's music ;)
I was just thinking the same. Yundi played this better. However, Lang Lang plays Lizt better. Have you seen the UA-cam video of Lang Lang playing Liebustrum? Makes me cry.
Li Yundi wins this one, at least for me. But I probably don’t have the rights to say that... they both play way better than me lol. I think Lang Lang plays faster but the interpretation Li Yundi definitly wins. Also at 8:19 I love how he gradually spreed up instead of an immediate change of speed from slow to fast. It’s like it gives us a chance to slowly wake up from the dreamy state instead of a sudden shock. Also this is the part I think he beat Lang Lang by: 0:15 vs 5:26 he did it so much better, where u can actually feels the fantasy. I think Lang Lang did it too fast and the first few notes of that part was the same loudness. And he made the accented notes too loud and the others too quiet. I think Li Yundi did a good balance, still hears the melody but can also hear the other notes which is what makes it sound like a fantasy.
@ quinn young; Yundi is about elegance, poetry, power and passion; Langlang is about "I wonder how fast I can play this without falling off the stool!"
shut up - piano noobs like u will never understand lang langs playing. He brings his true emotions into the piano and youre just too trash to see them.
+Cakez (켸이크) He may have screwed up, but he's just human like the rest of us. I mean, everyone is bound to screw up at one point right? Even before that concert, he was still not as famous as Lang Lang though.
Yun Di's list is very limited , you can't have 100 concerts a year ,but play the same song over and over again .you need to have long list of different composer's works ,
Lucas McCaffrey Shit. You really know about piano? You may search Evile Yundi in youtube. Yundi Li has too many performance crashes. He is too lazy to practice.
yundi li did it better in my opinion. as for lang lang, it felt like it was lacking something. but anyways both are good, but yundi just felt better when he played it
I have to say Yundi Li's rendition was far superior. Lang Lang, despite his great mechanical playing, lacked expression as shown by Yundi Li. By no means is Lang Lang a poorer pianist; I think the true difference lies in that Yundi's rendition of this piece was far more poetic and expressive. Thus, it comes with no surprise that Yundi Li was the youngest winner of the Chopin competition :)
Honestly, we should forget about comparing pianists, we should agree that the fact that Chopin himself made this piece as an impromptu is incredible. He puts all of us to shame!
Yundi Li is better than Lang Lang in this interpretation of Chopin Fantaisie-Impromptu. His playing is more fluid, elegant and poetic. Lang Lang has a style too "precious", as usual! That said, Lang Lang is not bad, just not as good as Yundi. Thank your for posting this comparative video.
Long story short, Langlang does not have proper family education, and is pretty aggressive. That's why the interpretation is not good. And most songs he play, a sense of chaos can be found. But I do agree with you that Langlang is good as well, but only in term of the techniques, not interpretation and body performance.
What an exceptional pianist he is! I'm told I'm good but he's far better than I am even. But I'm glad that I can say I'm a pianist. This is a beautiful piece by Chopin. Lang Lang does a wonderful job with this. Very expressive and romantic. However the second pianist really nails it without running away with it. A beautiful piece and this second pianist really nails it!!!!
lang lang is so damn rushed., however i have to say his technique is one of the most complete among the best. But i do think he needs to take more time to think about music deeply before playing it!!!! yundi definitely thought abt this deeply and his treatment is very down to the details.
Thank you. Beautiful both. I personally don't like music competitions. Each one has their own style. Each one is different while still being brilliant. Thanks for the post. Beautiful way to start the day.
Lang Lang played this piece with exaggerated emotions and an alarming speed. I like Yundi Li's better because his interpretation is more exact and meets Chopin's expectations. Everybody vote for Yundi Li!!!!!!!!!!
My favorite interpretation of this piece is that of Arthur Rubenstein, but I don't understand why people are criticizing Lang Lang's version JUST because it's fast. It's like they ignored his phrasing and dynamics entirely. I personally thought his version was better than Yundi's because Lang Lang makes certain themes really shine whereas Lundi kind of just brushes past them. Anyways, they're both phenomenal players. Let's stop hating in the comment section ffs
Mehra Ahsan, totally agree. I first liked Yundi's version when I didn't know Lang Lang's version. But now I really like Lang Lang's. He is way too good at phrasing and making certain themes (like Mehra Ahsan wrote) as always!
Lang is a very good pianist technically, but perhaps lacks a touch of deep artistry. The second pianist Yundi Li, not only has excellent technique; he surpasses himself and reaches unsuspected levels of perfection and immeasurable and transcendent art. This second pianist may be one of the best pianists there has been to date.
A big difference is in the beginning, LangLang's sounds somewhat mechanical and "tinny", whereas Yundi's version sounds smoother and has a nicer buildup. I was first going to give them the benefit of a doubt and say that a different piano could produce a different tone. BUT, I noticed that Yundi adds a slight sustain pedal, which makes all the difference. Both are amazing pianists though.
Frederic Chopin would say that he who performs him as he is---Frederic Chopin sans any garnishment or embellishment---is the best. Frederic Chopin is the grandmaster of Piano Music above any other. The 14th International Piano Competition proves it. Chopin's Koncert-e-moll Op. 11 is world's most difficult piece and a seemingly impossible piece to play, with all its passion and infinite variations, without making a single note mistake. But Li Yundi is one of the world's 5 greatest pianists in history...
Both are great Pianists. But my favorite Pianist is Yundi Li, who is not only good at Chopin, Liszt, but also quite good at Mozart's Piano pieces too. They both had Gramophone Recordings of the same Mozart's Piano Sonata No.10 ..⏬ ua-cam.com/video/6bCDyefunxc/v-deo.html ---by Lang Lang ua-cam.com/video/ncjm8FXTtCw/v-deo.html ---by Yundi Li
Lang Lang did fine. This piece is hard. He put his feelings and personality in it. He was very expressive. In my opinion, Lang Lang's personality is a bit better than Yundi Li's. I was very moved by Lang Lang's playing. On the other hand, Yundi Li"s playing is more fast and fluid. It was more of a serious feeling. I think they both played good. Lang Lang was more like "This music is enjoyable. I'll make the audience think that too." While Yundi Li is like, "How can I make this music so the crowd might like the music better?" In my opinion, they both did well in their own way. Thank you for posting this video. This is a great thing I can refer to when I practice this piece.
Zehua Feng Give credit to Lang Lang's putting his emotion into Chopin's work but you have to realize Chopin could actually be irritated by his understanding and interpretation. Lang Lang is better off talking to Beethoven or Rachmaninoff.
I am afraid you misplaced the order of players, Yundi was the first and followed by Lang Lang. Therefore, your comments to Lang Lang seems to fit Yundi better, while the words to Yundi describe more likely Lang Lang.
" Lang Lang's personality is a bit better than Yundi Li's." ???? Maybe you like more a personality that smiles and plays schmaltzy? If we talk about musicality, Yundi Li is far, far superior.
Compare LangLang's 0:15-0:35 to Yundi's 5:25-5:45, it feels like LangLang tries to force emotions into the piece while Yundi's emotions flows from the piece.
Lang Lang is trying to beat a speed record. Nothing to do with Chopin. Chopin's music is that of the soul, it takes virtuosity but it's never about virtuosity,
+FAK___ Lang Lang somehow thinks faster in music is better, which is of course utterly false. Have a listen to Lang Lang's Turkish March by Mozart. It's impossibly fast. I hate this Turkish March of his.
In this case, as I find in most cases of Lang Lang's performances, his ego and gyrations at the keyboard are obstacles and distractions to making music and the composer's intent. Yundi, goes beyond the printed page and seeks to find what lies behind the pages, works it out, and brings it forth. Yundi clearly has a beautiful velvet sound and well-trained ear. Lang Lang has a beautiful sound as well, but an emotional depth is missing somehow. Unfortunately, once the performer's ego overshadows the music and composer's intentions, the performance of a given work takes a back seat. And the listener is presented with a shallow, "Reader's Digest" version of the work.
Lang Lang is very fast in the main part, but when it comes to the happy moment, it is so slow. Then the transition from the happy to the sad is very long. Then at the end it is too soft and slow at the same time! While Yundi Li has more strength and more reason into this song. More romantic and serious in the sense of this song. The song he played is advanced, so he took more time into it and also the song isn't getting rushed. So I side with Yundi Li. Sorry Lang Lang. Lang Lang was a little bit off the hook in taking time into the song. They were both good. I believe. But if I were trying to sleep with the songs, I believe that sleeping with Yundi's song will help me sleep, and help the plant grow more faster.
I already know you came into this video thinking Lang Lang plays too fast. Lang Lang doesn’t play with emotion. You do list is superior. Before you even watched it I bet no matter what it sounded like you knew what you were going to say.
@@christopherlyons346 plays without emotion. Lmao are you an idiot? How can you tell whether one plays with or without? Did you ask him yourself? Again. Another ignorant idiot that downright looks down at Lang Lang without actually going into what goes through his mind
It's surprising that in the same pieces, they can put their own emotion and interpretation differently and someone can touch, reach out to the heart strings
Cuando Yundi Li acudió donde Kristian Zimerman para que le diese clases, después de oírlo interpretar unas piezas, le dijo: No te puedo dar lecciones, porque no las necesitas. Un genio del piano a otro.
I listened and realized Lang Lang emphasize on his right hand more, the running lead notes are very firm and clear, note by note and precise, technically strong! However, Yundi left hand rhythm sound clear and balance with his right hand’s notes , his emotions very strong and I can feel it. Conclusion : Lang Lang is a Machine and Yundi is Human
@bojack335 Tbh none of the pros that play this song follow the exact sheet music as it is written down by Chopin. Which you would know if you had practiced this piece. So no, you don't know... :p
Lang Lang has an aggressive playstyle. In my 22 years of playing, I can agree that Lang Lang has a better grasp at rhythm than Yundi. However, Yundi's expression is ten times more than Lang Lang's version. Capturing Fantasie Impromptu the way Chopin intended leans more towards Yundi Li here. Yundi Li can convey Chopin's darker pieces better than Lang Lang can. What Lang Lang has done to the Butterfly Etude and Chopin's Waltzes has a better joyous feeling within the rhythm.
+André Uhres yes there is sure a huge difference, but first of all in the SOUND QUALITY of both recordings: Lang´s recording is poor and flat while Yundi´s is brilliant with a rich sound environment !
9 років тому+3
Rolf Eichele could a better sound quality compensate for his shallow musical expression and clumsy phrasing? I strongly doubt it.
+Bryan Williams It's Lang Lang's thing to play too fast, not only this piece. Faster does not mean better, and often means worse, however Lang Lang seems to forget about it. E.g. for me his Turkich March by Mozart is practically impossible to listen to. It's way, WAY too fast. Alle melody is lost. It sounds like a machine gun.
I actually didn't think Lang Lang was playing faster. Yundi was playing at pretty much the same speed, but the way Lang Lang puts emphasis on the wrong notes makes it sound "rushy," and I think it's just another one of his tricks to wow the general audience.
I don’t understand why people dislike Lang Lang ‘s performance. Yes he’s playing fast which doesn’t mean it is lack of souls! You can still see the two lines flowing, which call the melody and the bass. Haters need to get more understanding of classical music before judging
Personally I think that the 2 are wonderful. The video is 10 minutes, and each pianist interpreted exactly the same number of notes in the same time (5 minutes). I agree with you, the 2 pianists convey great emotions. Regards!
Lang lang knows how to bring out the emotions from their depth which are meant to be in the song at specific times(he feels the music) whilst yundi li shows signs of elegance and passion...... that’s my opinion btw and for me no musician is better than the other.
Wow thank you for this video. Amazing playing as always by Maestro Lang Lang. Smooth playing, and clear emotion. Very strong dynamic and interpretation. Bravo!
Actually guys I think the speed that Lang Lang is playing it at is correct because it's in 2/2 or cut time which means two beats per measure, so if you were to look at it on the sheet music there are quite a lot of notes per measure, so that's the reason why he has to play really quickly because the two beats run out quickly.
To me, Lang Lang is a musical genius whereas Yundi Li is what has been said of the Nobel winning physicist Richard Feymann: he is "no ordinary genius." He is way above what it takes to be called a genius. Though I dislike the idea of comparing pianists by ethnicity or race, that's probably one of the reasons many people think of these two together. So if we are comparing "Chinese pianists", I would say the both Yuja Wang and Yundi Li are at the top for me. Lang Lang is an outstanding pianist, however. I can understand that some people may like him the best. Especially on this piece, however, I'm not surprised that most of the comments seems to be running in favor of Yundi Li.
Comunque apprezzabili. Bravo.
at one time, there was supposed to be a contrast between the melody,; the 2nd melody same as the first one, but an octave above, langlang did notplay that, he played it in the same octv, but yundi played it
I do prefer Yundi Li's interpretation, but I disagree with those of you saying that Lang Lang was trying to play it as fast as possible, or trying to set a speed record. It was really just his interpretation. If you need any clarification, go listen to the 2nd section of his interpretation.
A masterpiece like Fantasie Impromptu in C-sharp Minor by the legendary composer and pianist Chopin, can not and should not be played with technical skills alone. Instead, the player's personality, past education and life experience can strongly influence the understanding and interpretation of this masterpiece. In this regard, Mr. Li is a better interpreter than Mr. Lang in their performances.
i like yundi's version better also the times that i have seen lang lang play sometimes see a bit "choppy" he has a different way of presenting the songs while i feel yundi's verion is more fluid more thought out somehow.
These accelerated versions lose intention and the natural harmony that has a bell to ring at a certain speed. They can be virtuous pianists, unique in its speed, but not excited its interpretation. The version that really gets to the heart is that of Claudio Arrau .

What is wrong with you?! Can you not understand that fantasie impromptu is not supposed to be fast it is supposed to be musical.
I dare to say: So obviously Yundi... notes have much much more meaning
lang lang's impromptu exudes emotions of shock and stress, and i like it
Yundi plays this piece more as a 'whole' and I was totally immersed!
The sound quality is obviously different, the later being much better for its piano.
Totally agreed!!!
Both are great Pianists. But my favorite Pianist is Yundi Li, who is not only good at Chopin, Liszt, but also quite good at Mozart's Piano pieces too.
They both had Gramophone Recordings of the same Mozart's Piano Sonata No.10 ..⏬
ua-cam.com/video/6bCDyefunxc/v-deo.html ---by Lang Lang
ua-cam.com/video/ncjm8FXTtCw/v-deo.html ---by Yundi Li
LOL, you read minds.
Wei-Xin Ni no Lang Lang was first, then yundi li.
" Lang Lang's personality is a bit better than Yundi Li's." ????
Maybe you like more a personality that smiles and plays schmaltzy?
If we talk about musicality, Yundi Li is far, far superior.
I do enjoy Lang Lang playing but I must confess Yundi Li is much superior in this piece. Lang Lang is too much in the hurry.
+Sanderus you're right
+Sanderus i searched and i loved it! the only part i disliked was my favorite part XD he needed to ascentuate some parts but thats just IMO
+Swen Zettler For each their own :D "My" version of Turkish March is the one by Massimiliano Ferrati.
I only disliked the superfast part. Other than that is full of life! Not judging his other works too
In this case, as I find in most cases of Lang Lang's performances, his ego and gyrations at the keyboard are obstacles and distractions to making music and the composer's intent. And the listener is presented with a shallow, "Reader's Digest" version of the work.
i had the same thought too
Yundi Li por mucho, mejor interpretación..
Lang Lang is very fast in the main part, but when it comes to the happy moment, it is so slow. Then the transition from the happy to the sad is very long. Then at the end it is too soft and slow at the same time!
While
Yundi Li has more strength and more reason into this song.
They're called pieces not songs, but yes. I generally believe that both are as good as each other, but in some pieces one is better than the other.
i agree
I already know you came into this video thinking Lang Lang plays too fast. Lang Lang doesn’t play with emotion. You do list is superior. Before you even watched it I bet no matter what it sounded like you knew what you were going to say.
@@christopherlyons346 plays without emotion. Lmao are you an idiot? How can you tell whether one plays with or without? Did you ask him yourself? Again. Another ignorant idiot that downright looks down at Lang Lang without actually going into what goes through his mind
Reima Kousei I literally agree with you lmao I was mocking that guy haha
It's surprising that in the same pieces, they can put their own emotion and interpretation differently and someone can touch, reach out to the heart strings
Cuando Yundi Li acudió donde Kristian Zimerman para que le diese clases, después de oírlo interpretar unas piezas, le dijo: No te puedo dar lecciones, porque no las necesitas. Un genio del piano a otro.
Yund Li is by far more captivating.
I listened and realized Lang Lang emphasize on his right hand more, the running lead notes are very firm and clear, note by note and precise, technically strong! However, Yundi left hand rhythm sound clear and balance with his right hand’s notes , his emotions very strong and I can feel it. Conclusion : Lang Lang is a Machine and Yundi is Human
yundi all the way
its like Lang Lang emphasizes certain notes that shouldnt be emphasized because he thinks it makes him unique
do you know exactly what the composer intended? Answer = no. Only the composer does so that makes your point defunct.
@bojack335 Tbh none of the pros that play this song follow the exact sheet music as it is written down by Chopin. Which you would know if you had practiced this piece. So no, you don't know... :p
@bojack335 Wait did u just call Fantaisie Impromptu garbage? :O haha
Well, I agree that langlang is aggressive, but, his rhythm is not that good, you can sense chaos in his playings.
But yeah, in this one, langlang did have better rhythm at the beginning.
Yundi li is about elegance, while Lang lang is about fun.
which is why Lang Lang is best at playing mozart!
Langlang is about showing off.
谢谢你,让我感觉到了他们的不同,这样子才精彩,一样音乐的由不同的人产生不同的感觉,个人更喜欢李云迪的,可能是他比较专注于肖邦,而郎朗更博学,各有专长
There is a difference as between day and night. Undoubtedly, Yundi Li is vastly superior.
+André Uhres yes there is sure a huge difference, but first of all in the SOUND QUALITY of both recordings: Lang´s recording is poor and flat while Yundi´s is brilliant with a rich sound environment !
Rolf Eichele
could a better sound quality compensate for his shallow musical expression and clumsy phrasing? I strongly doubt it.
Yundi!
Yundi Li is so much better. Much more emotional and technically sound. Lang lang plays it way to fast
Regards!
Yund li made me cry 😭 flowing so naturally... Like an ocean wave
In my opinion yudi li and Valentina lisitsa both are the masters of this piece❤
yundi li (Y)
thanks for that skip button. lol
:( no skip button for me
Definitely Lang Lang’s worst interpretation of a piece not saying that it’s bad thought.
Let us just enjoyed the two, the greatest pianists of all time GPAT, they have earned that title.
Li Yundi's rendition is cleaner.
Yundi... I think both interpretations are quite eqally moving, but Yundi's interpretation just feels... cleaner
One was born with it, and one was beat into him
Comunque apprezzabili. Bravo.
Lang Lang plays this too fast and the piece loses its soul as a consequence.
at one time, there was supposed to be a contrast between the melody,; the 2nd melody same as the first one, but an octave above, langlang did notplay that, he played it in the same octv, but yundi played it
YINDI LIN WINS
Bravo, Yundi!
I do prefer Yundi Li's interpretation, but I disagree with those of you saying that Lang Lang was trying to play it as fast as possible, or trying to set a speed record. It was really just his interpretation. If you need any clarification, go listen to the 2nd section of his interpretation.
Li Yundi won from the first note
Chalk and cheese. The Yundi Lee version is far superior in so many ways.
Yundi is pure felling
yundi li lo hace con sentimiento y debido ritmo lang lang lo hace con virtuosismo agilidad incomparables
Lang in their performances.
i like yundi's version better also the times that i have seen lang lang play sometimes see a bit "choppy" he has a different way of presenting the songs while i feel yundi's verion is more fluid more thought out somehow.
yundi´s rythm makes you speachless
Wish Lang Lang didn't play this one so fast, would have been 10 times better.
These accelerated versions lose intention and the natural harmony that has a bell to ring at a certain speed. They can be virtuous pianists, unique in its speed, but not excited its interpretation. The version that really gets to the heart is that of Claudio Arrau .
Lang Lang : 00:00
Yundi Li : 5:07
Yundi Li of course!!! Best version all time!
