  • A short demonstration of internal waves using a tank filled with mineral oil and water. Rocking the tank simulates the tide-generating force acting on the world oceans. Internal waves are generated at submerged topography.

    Though it seems like there is not much going on at the interface when the seamount is removed, it's notable that the wavelength at the interface appears to be much shorter than that of the surface wave. Cool demo.

    cool this was mentioned in the quran 1400 years ago:
    In Surah An-Nur, Allah (SWT) has revealed: “Or [they are] like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds - darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allah has not granted light - for him there is no light” (Quran, 24:40).

    How deep in the ocean do these internal waves form? I realize this is a demonstration not a scale model. It works very well.

    • @edwardzaron5950
      @edwardzaron5950  2 роки тому +1

      They can form anywhere the water is stratified. This model is meant to represent waves associated with the stratification of the main thermocline, about 700m deep in the mid-Pacific.

    I think this is a fantastic example. Thank you for the demonstration.
    Would it be possible to create a similar experiment but instead flip the water and the oil?
    The theory behind this is at much deeper depths the water pressure would be greater, hence the thicker fluid at the bottom.
    If you were able to do this with a much bigger container and have two scales for reading pressure(one closer to the surface with water, the other one in the oil), I'm sure you would be able to demonstrate how an internal wave could create a pressure front with with a very large delta between the two.
    I also came from watching a review on the Indonesian Submarine on which was stated an internal wave was most likely the candidate

      No it was not explained 1500 years ago. They have only started to get proper research in the last 100 years... Why do you site vague religious stories and anecdotes as fact? They are not factual. You have a right to faith but do not confuse what you have read in your book of faith as something that explained modern phenomena properly 1500 years ago. If anything it was an epic tale that is exxagerated to emphasize a morale as is with most religious text. But you are wrong. Again not discrediting the mentioning I am pointing out the obvious lie in that it was explained.

    So do submarines experience turbulence?

    • @edwardzaron5950
      @edwardzaron5950  5 років тому +4

      There might be turbulent water motion in their environment, but most of the time it would not be noticeable or problematic for a large submarine. I don't have direct knowledge of submarines, but I imagine they would need to plan their course and compensate for ocean currents of, at most, a few meters per second. You might be interested to read about this submarine which crashed into a seamount:

    To Me this demonstration has little to do with the oceans simulation or with proper good experimental practice. Mineral oil and water has extremely different viscosity, while ocean water viscosity has not such a step gradient, and you do not have such a separation layer. then the waves you generate are giving energy to both the layers, like an earthwake will do in the real ocean. if you generate waves only on the top layer (as in reality waves are generated by wind), you will see that the bottom layer it is not affected. Again, the height of your mountain, seems very well designed to be just at the right height, and you are watching a tip over phenomen (same you will get with no oil).

    • @edwardzaron5950
      @edwardzaron5950  5 років тому

      Yes, you raise some good points. Regarding viscosity, I would like to make a new version using kerosene instead of mineral oil, but this will be problematic if I make a spill. Regarding the "tip over" or "overtopping" -- yes, that is just for visual effect; the key analogy with the ocean are the waves which move away from the "mountain."

    • @drdre4397
      @drdre4397 3 роки тому

      @@edwardzaron5950 I feel like the difference of viscosity did not disprove the example. I can see where he is coming from but this demonstration clearly explained internal waves.

  • @paulcrawford1108

    however the sea is constant medium... so what you are observing is turbulence?

    • @edwardzaron5950
      @edwardzaron5950  4 роки тому +1

      The sea is not entirely a "constant medium." The average temperature of the ocean surface is about 60deg F, and the average temperature at the bottom is about 35deg F. In between there is a region of relatively rapid temperature change, the "thermocline." The change in water density across the thermocline is represented by the two layers of fluid in this demonstration.
