He's right about the character's appeal: unavailable but also kind, sincere, completely trustworthy, and curious. That's catnip, really. Not a shock that he became the main breakout character. In a just universe, he'd have a bookshelf full of Emmys.
Could agree with you more!!! It’s a travesty that he didn’t get an Emmy for playing Data. Just a sign of the time I guess. SciFi wasn’t taken seriously 🙁 But! At least he got a Saturn award in 1997 for First Contact 😊
My uncle has a social disability disorder where he has locked himself in his room for over 35 years and when I was not visiting him over the years, he had his Star Trek to keep him company. For people like my uncle, Star Trek was an escape but also a friend. Thank you.

I saw First Contact a number of years ago, thanks to my brother. I had never seen the series nor know anything about it, but the movie was so good it left me impressed for a long time. So much that when I got Netflix some months ago and I found TNG, I immediately started watching it and got hooked. Best show ever made.
Data's attractiveness is so much more than what Brent said. For me it's his innocence of humanity. He gets confused like a child. I just want to hug him, especially when he got the emotion chip and was overwhelmed
I have to say, Patrick Stewart brought the old theatre discipline...although he was much fun on the set...after a bit. Stewart was a better Captain than Shatner...but, there will only be one Shatner, as James T Kirk. If the often criticized "over acting" had not been part if TOS, it is doubtful TNG would have happened. It's my understanding that they actually teach "Shatner Speak" in acting school because of the uniqueness of it. Now, too much acting is special effects.
Yes! Patrick Stewart is rightfully recognized for his amazing presence and ability. However, Data is as much a reason for the success of the show as Stewart, with his amazing ability to add personality and humor to what could have been a very dry character.
I love the series and especially what you brought to Data ! I was a lonely Hispanic kid that grew up with divorced parents the were so wrapped up in themselves I could of just faded away. He is right about what made Data appealing to women. He wouldn't ever be cruel and he wouldn't cheat on you. The other thing is that Data is sexy, because he was played by Brent.
Great interview, Data wouldn't have been do popular if Brent hadn't played him almost like a machine in manner and movements. Brent had to evolve in real life and in conventions. Very charming personality.
I've been a ST fan since the the Man Trap first aired in '66. I have enjoyed all of the spin offs and the continuation of the saga. Having said that I've been to only a few convention bc of time constraints, but thoroughly enjoyed them. Now to Bret, I believe he was very underrated for his versatility and enjoyed every different character he played. I never met him personally, but I had a chance to observe him in proximity at a convention, and what impressed me about him is he's a normal guy like you and me, he was very pleasant.
I really like Cpt Picard but Data (for me) is the Number One Actor of TNG. So many different Roles and the mastering of all these "expressions" of emotions in different scenarios... He really nailed it!!!
First Contact was so good because the Next Gen crew were finally given a story with epic scope and plenty of action ... against a foe the fans loved and were familiar with. I'll never understand why the other 3 movies seemed almost 'scared' to cut loose and use exciting concepts from the show. Imagine a movie with those creatures that crawl inside human bodies ... they could have returned to infiltrate Starfleet again, and the Enterprise crew could have been hunted by normally friendly ships while trying to expose the plot. Or a movie with a full-on Romulan conflict ... Or a movie with Q taking the crew to distant parts of galaxy.
By the way Brent, Holodecks were going to be part of the original series but the idea was scrapped due to budget constraints. In spite of this, you can still find a holodeck on the Enterprise 1701 technical manual.
The most remarkable thing for me is that Brent Spiner can play Data, the harmless, benevolent, almost naive android we all know and love. And then turn around and play any one of a number of superbly creepy characters, most applicably Lore. Brent does creepy, psychotic evil really, really well lol.
I've seen so much shit thrown at 1st Contact, even by Trek fans. I saw it as a kid, but I still love it and when I attempt to analyze it objectively, it passes every requirement I have for a great movie, especially in the context of TNG.
Yeah. I grew up with TNG, and I'm also pretty critical of films in my grown years. While I can recognize the many hollywoodisms in First Contact, it remains a favorite flick of my life. Yeah it's silly at times but.. the movie's so much fun xD and the music too.
Idk how it's had shit thrown at it when it's considered the best Trek movie ever after Wrath of Khan by many, many fans and critics. The poor souls who didn't like it are clearly in the minority and probably prefer Star Trek 5 lol.
I absolutely love Brent Spiner, Sir Patrick Stewart and the rest of the Next Generation Crew! WHEN Sir Spiner are you going to film the next Next Generation MOVIE and bring YOUR character back to life??? Much love & respect!
I would've loved to have seen Data and the Doctor together. Two of the greatest and most popular characters of Star Trek (also Seven of Nine and Spock of course) who also would've probably been best friends because they'd understand each other and their quest for humanity.

I liked what he said about people not knowing he's an actor now, but why is Data's hair white?
Data has an aging program etc etc
Well, if I'm correct when the TNG movie's started, he had the emotion chip put in, so things were bound to change.
