  • ‘We are all, at some point in our lives, obliterated by loss. If you haven’t been by now, you will be in time - that’s for sure. And, of course, if you have been fortunate enough to have been truly loved, in this world, you will also cause extraordinary pain to others when you leave it. That’s the covenant of life and death, and the terrible beauty of grief.’ - Nick Cave, Faith, Hope and Carnage
In the depths of the pandemic of summer 2020 Nick Cave began a series of long conversations with his old friend Seán O’Hagan. The 40 hours of recordings have been distilled into a remarkable bestselling book, Faith, Hope and Carnage. In it Cave, one of the world’s most acclaimed and visionary musicians, talks with radical candour about his past, his loves, his work ethic, his creativity and the agony of losing his 15-year-old son Arthur in 2015. The book addresses all the big questions: What is love? How does faith work? How do we handle grief?
In November 2023 Cave and O’Hagan came to the Intelligence Squared stage to continue the conversation, as they explored the human condition and offered hoped. As Cave says, ‘Despite how debased or corrupt we are told humanity is, and how degraded the world has become, it just keeps on being beautiful. It can’t help it.’

I do get that religious feeling on Nick's live show. You laugh, you cry, you are hurting while listening his music and you come out of it clean, refreshed and optimistic. Like new beginning is around a corner and reachable.

What an unusually good introduction, I must say that this is hands down the best such presentation I have ever seen! They are usually quite dull indeed, and I almost always skip them. This delightful, bright woman, otoh, is wonderful!

It's hard to relate to Nick not listening to his own records. I guess other recording artists would understand. Wonderful interview!

Jesus is said to be the Son of God. These are deeply mystical concepts. Jesus is my saviour, I choose that for the time I die and I hold the concept of God with me all the time. Nicks work has always been concerned with these spiritual things, since Birthday Party. I was there in those early days and his performance was almost like getting our demons out. His and ours.

Although its unlikely any supernatural God exists, religious belief can for some give comfort.

Nick Cave was very careful with his words when it came to the Christian subject ,and that is ,he probably does not want to end up dead like Prince ,Who even would talk about JESUS and bible issues at some of his concert . Never be ashamed of being a true Christian.or to talk about JESUS
