Let's Draw Faces!

  • Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
Grab a bunch of colorful tools and let's draw faces! Our goal is not to capture resemblance. Let's just have fun with our tools and enjoy the process, while we look at the characteristics of the model's face, and try to simplify and abbreviate. Sometimes it helps to exaggerate certain facial features or accessories too. In this video, I'm using several colors, which will make the page even more playful, but it also teaches me about color, and if certain combinations work well or not.
I'd like to remind you that with every bit of experiment you do in your sketchbook, you're teaching yourself something. Even if you don't know exactly what it is, yet.
Can you imagine what you miss out on, if you're NOT making time to draw? Your inner critic might tell you that you'll mess up the page. Or that it's dumb to draw from photos. Or that the faces you'll draw won't look like the actual people anyway, so why even bother?
You got this. You can push those inner critic thoughts away and put down that blob of color. Draw that face on top, even when it looks wonky. Or weird. Or when your drawing turns out to be a "bad drawing". That still is better than not having drawn at all.
    Materials used in this video:
    -Hahnemühle Watercolor book A6 landscape
    -Ecoline Brush pen
    -Stabilo Woody 3-in-1 Pencils
-Photos of Mrs Koene and Ms Koene from the fifties by Frans Grummer (expo in Centre Ceramique Maastricht; www.centrecera...)
I also mentioned my friend Sabine Wisman, with whom I teach workshops a couple times a year. Find out more about Sabine here (her website is in dutch): www.sabinewism...

❤ love the use of markers here!
I started drawing family members from photos when I couldn’t travel home during the pandemic. It completely reignited my childhood passion for art and doodling.❤

Great suggestion for drawing faces! Yesterday I screen shotted some faces to draw and now I shall give this technique a go. Woodies are fun to use, and water-soluble too. Thanks for another inspiring video!

I just gave this try! I used watercolor for the base and Neocolor I for the "details". I've always been very intimidated of drawing people but this one that I just made is genuinely my favorite one ever (so far). I think it's the combination of looser drawing with blunt tools that made it more expressive. Thank you!

Hello Koosje, thank you for the fun and relaxing exercise! I had to show the start of your video to my daughter, because she has the same honey-themed mug. Finally, would it be an idea to place some copies of your books in a physical store? Amersfoort has a couple of wonderful shops, and because it's so touristy, many people from all over the Netherlands could then either go out deliberately to buy a copy, or stumble upon it and fall in love. ☘️

    • @KoosjeKoene
      @KoosjeKoene  Рік тому +1

There are physical copies in a few shops around the Netherlands. I may put some effort in getting the book to a bookshop in Amersfoort. As a self-published author, it's a lot of work to do so - and to be completely transparent, it's not bringing in that much, so it hardly balances out the time and energy I'd need to put in it, while working on other projects that have priority...

@@KoosjeKoene That makes sense. You know better than me of course. Sharing ideas is how I show I care, but people are always free to do something with them or not. I call it throwing some pebbles in a pond. The pebbles will always sink into the mud, but maybe the ripples they spread spark ideas or bring about an unexpected connection. ☘️

Just a bit of fun, as art should be. I seldom do this type of picture. The closest I ever come to it is when I use watercolor to lay down the background colors. I let it dry overnight. Then I put a sketch on top of the watercolor using a pen of one type or another. The sketch can be a landscape, a simple structure, a pile of rock, a face or two, some animals, who knows. I’ll be looking forward to next week. May this week be a good one for you and yours. -OkieSketcher1949
