Jimmy built a dynasty with smart drafting and making 51 trades. It took Jerra two trades and a count of awful drafts to send Cowboys back ten years into stone age.
That only worked before unrestricted free agency... once that kicked in the late 90s everything changed. Players were leaving after rookie contracts and dynasties were essentially over with... Pats did a good job of solving the problem tho
Hey, in 2021 we all found out that it really wasn't "The Patriot Way" after all......that was a bunch a bullshit. What it really was up in New England was THE TOM BRADY WAY.
Innovation works once, before the rest of the people catch up. Moneyball did something similar to Baseball. But the people who came up with the revolutionary thinking, profited like bandits by taking advantage of the inefficiencies they had detected. Their innovation quickly reduced the inefficiencies.
According to that chart, a team would have to give up its entire year's draft just to move from #4 to #1. No player is worth that (Ricky Williams being the example). I also wouldn't mortgage future first rounders. The only time I would trade is either down for more picks or if an elite player somehow slipped way beyond where I thought he should be picked and then I'd only give up an extra late rounder.
True, or at the very least make sure Jerry is locked out of the draft room till after the pick is decided. Seriously if he had his way Dallas would've been stuck with Johnny Manchild, sorry Johnny Manziel in that draft instead of Zack Martin.
Probably Jerry Jones threw away Johnson draft value card to prove to himself that he could draft good players himself without Jimmy Johnson and his draft value card. He and the Cowboys haven't done squat since then.
Crimson Koba I'm talking about the old rams like the late 40s and 50s. I believe they are the first team to have traveling scouts and scouting report on players, prospects ranking etc. that's why they were so dominate and had so many hofers in those days
The problem is, only jerry still holds to that chart. That explains why he gets shafted in every trade now. Other teams simply ask for the moon, and if they find a team desperate enough, they get the moon. Jerry is stuck in the 1990s.
Making sure we don't get stiffed. That's all well and good until the player you drafted doesn't pan out for a variety of reasons a couple of which are didn't adapt well to the pro game and didn't have the right guys around him. Which that second one I mentioned makes me wonder how many NFL busts would have actually been good?
It actually sounds like something the previous Cowboys brain trust (Gil Brandt and company) would have invented since they were so innovative to begin with. Funny that it was actually Jerry and Jimmy and inspired by something from the oil drilling industry.
It can also ruin one. In 1998, Chargers switched picks #2 and #3 with Cardinals and gave them a future first and second round pick and Pro Bowl RB, Eric Metcalf so they could draft Ryan Leaf. It took them until 2004 to get a winning record, three years after dumping Leaf.
How is 51 trades more than the rest of the league put together? You had to trade with someone which means that the rest of the league put together had at least 51 trades

Huh, didn’t know the pick value system came from jimmy Johnson. Getting these lil backstories really is interesting.
Jimmy is finally getting his due. Hall of Fame baby!!!!!!
Jimmy Johnson is the center piece of the Cowboys dynasty. Everyone is in the hall of fame but him. Doesn't make sense
Yono84 even jerry Jones. Makes me sick seeing him there. Doesn’t deserve it at all.
Jimmy is in the hall of fame now. It was long overdue.
@@jackdull5699: RIP cousin. The family misses you a bunch.
Jerry Jones killed it... Dallas could of won four straight super bowls if Jimmy Johnson was still in control..

It was before free agency or a salary cap at all, much different league
And then Jerry blew it!
Take the Draft Chart....flip it over backwards and upside down...and it's the Jets Chart (at least until last year).

So this became the NFL's version of sabermetrics.

2 playoff wins in 22 years they could do with updating that formula lol
Amen

3 Super Bowl victories in 26 seasons. You see? I can cherry pick a block of time to fit my narrative too!
Idiot, the whole nfl uses this formula moron
Probably Jerry Jones threw away Johnson draft value card to prove to himself that he could draft good players himself without Jimmy Johnson and his draft value card. He and the Cowboys haven't done squat since then.
And before Jimmy and Jerry it was Tex,Tom and Gil who changed how teams scouted ,drafted and rated talent
Rams and cowboys have truly revolutionized the scouting and drafting aspects in nfl history
Well the Rams also have one of the worst draft classes in NFL history. The 1996 Rams are the prime example of how you shouldn't draft.
Crimson Koba I'm talking about the old rams like the late 40s and 50s. I believe they are the first team to have traveling scouts and scouting report on players, prospects ranking etc. that's why they were so dominate and had so many hofers in those days
Yep! Actually, both Tex Schramm and Gil Brandt got their start in the 50s with the Rams before shaping the Cowboys.
0:03 $hit eating grin* "Herschel buddy, you're gonna help me win 3 Super Bowls for the Cowboys" -JJ
"Aight, cool." -HW
Forward-thinking teams will continue to rule the NFL.

He didn’t include his son in the trade!
Minnesota deserves all the credit for being dumb enough to make that trade. What were they thinking?
One trade can change the face of a Franchise and can create a Dynasty!!
Sahil Pandita Or one draft pick (Tom Brady)
Niklas Gebert Yaa that combined with Bill Belichick created something exceptional

I'm sure Jimmy was talking about INITIATING a trade versus other teams in that time frame.
That joke about including the daughter in the trade is a bit tasteless to me and quite frankly, unprofessional
Bonifilio Soto
Sarcasm. The other team is asking for the world , so he joked about giving up his world.
