You have to keep an eye on it regardless. The higher tier always takes up more room, so do some math to put the maximum amount of material in, have the routes set up to feed back into the launchpad, and you can know exactly when it'll be empty. Quick PI Tip - on some screens, double-clicking will start a 'default' action. For instance, when you're telling a factory what to make, you can double-click the schematic & simply double-click the output location. The game will do the routing for you.
The difference from Hi sec to Lo sec is pretty nice, very interested in what the PI in Pochven yields. Brother JakeL33t has a 9-ish minute video with an experimental P0 - P3 planet; it keeps running P3 if the P0 shuts down before you check on it.

Also did you know you can manually scan resources from inside a station with remote scanning? Up to 9 jumps away at level 5! Lets you chill out in your favorite station listening to ads while planning out your PI. Find the system that works for you! Don't forget to check the tax in a potential system! You have to be undocked and IN THAT SYSTEM to do this but can easily hit all the planets in a potential system from the 'relative' safety of 0km station keeping. Just choose the 'Warp To' option, click a planet, and right click to get a popup to check the local customs office tax rate. IT IS SUPER IMPORTANT to understand YOU WILL BE TAXED EVERY time anything crosses that customs office, export OR import! Make sure you get the trade skill category Customs Code Expertise to LOWER THAT TAX! Happy PI 😋

the short answer is: what do want more? to make the most isk/hr, or to have the least need to mess with your setup? the more steps, the more isk... but the youll still get ISK with simpler setups. all about how much you want to mess with and haul PI
better not use storage units, it's a bad habit to get into, if you start using manufacturing planets, or offload to storage because you not have the time to pick things up, this will become a big problem as there is a time restriction, if you use multiple launchpads you won't have this problem ever. plus you can access then all the storage from space and not need to move things around while getting ganked at customs ;) speaking of, this would be a great video item about how to avoid this properly. also I WANT PI [IGN SwingFish]

I'm lvl V pi skills and I can only have 2 extractors, 5 heads 3 basic factories each and out of power. hi-sec p1.
When doing t2 you can remove the storage facility and use the launch pad for all steps. Gives you more room for extractors.
