Abel is one of those artists who puts his all into his work, and there were certain elements of the after hours story even put into this performance.
Ok, quick things to consider after this badass show: 1. It's never easy to put on a 14 min medley when you have so many hits and good songs and you wanna merge them perfectly together 2. The opening with the choir was insane 3. Considering that the arena was basically empty (maybe 7k people in there) the idea to put the stage on the standings was nice and made the show more tv-oriented 4. Please notice how, during blinding Lights, even the camera crew is dressed in red and black so you don't notice them too much 5. Maybe people was too used to flashy and exaggerated halftime shows that now underestimate this performance (personally I think Abel kinda wanted to take the same approach Prince had in his halftime show, giving all the space needed to his character and the music) 6. Never seen Abel so happy on a stage, don't take this for granted
I would add another one: 7. The Superbowl is a familial event, so kids are also watching. Therefore the playlist had to be family friendly also, while being energetic at the same Time. The weeknd didn't even dropped the dirty/explicit tracks from his catalogue (we all know these bangers 😉), and still managed to deliver a great show. Glad i Saw him during the starboy tour! I think I understand why the "hating" and the critics about this performance and it's mainly because all the past superbowl performances were a lot of dancing, big effects and lot of PERFORMERS combining both of these things with them and people get used to it, and I'm not tryin' to be offensive at all, just objective but The Weeknd barely dances and when he does, he is very Michael Jackson's moves so here is where it comes the hating (confusion) thing and critics, the same happened with Maroon 5, but for those people who don't understand that, he is NOT a performer like Shakira, Beyonce, JLo, Gaga or Michael Jackson, he is an INTERPRETER, and an interpreter sings live! so he doesn't need to dance or be this big expectations where a lot of people got confused, mainly because they don't know how to relate this things with him and a lot of those people saying that were kinda out of the place. It’s just haters that don’t even like his music so they are gonna go in negatively. He showed how creative he was. From the dark demon choir to the mirror maze to the clones to the perfectly timed fireworks to the violins in earned it to the entire live band and instrumentation. It was incredible
I personally loved the halftime show. The man has amazing vocals. House of Balloons transitioning to Blinding Lights was EPIC. That fact that he played a song from his first mixtape & then right after to his greatest record breaking hit just showed that he did this performance for his fans and his XO fam only. He really cares about his fans & I will always respect him for that.
It’s the OG/ REAL Abel fans that understand this performance and what it means to him, his team and all of us out here than have been following him. He was homeless on the streets of Toronto free styling, doing drugs in his tiny apartment making music as a faceless, nameless artist making music that pierced the souls of the people listening and understanding what he’s really saying. From the beginning of the performance with all of the robot faces representing all of his fans and his presence that only exsisted on the internet to a choir of people singing along with him and cheering him on. To when he’s signing “I can’t feel my face” stumbling around the lit up hallway of mirrors and lights when he really blew up and became more “mainstream” where everyone was saying he got swallowed up by the fame to 7:42 when when he’s LITERALLY on top of the world singing “I feel it coming”. To the FUCKING HOB moment on the field (I know we all lost it at that moment) with what looked like hundreds of faceless Weeknd copies marching and singing along with him directly into “Blinding Lights”. Where he started to where he is now. Incredible. I’m sure there’s more that I missed or interpreted differently than others. Would love to hear others thoughts!
I think just because there was no crowd and people actually had to watch him, of course since there’s no other performances right now, people held this to such a high standard. I personally loved it. My favorite from the past few years
I thought it was amazing I cant understand people hating on it.This year's show only had 25k people due to Covid.Weeknd did what he could do best and it was incredible.Top 5 for sure
My jaw dropped when he was singing HOB, it was the most iconic moment of the performance. From Homeless to the super bowl, he never fails to impress me. XO
I couldn't agree with you more when you said he's been living this moment before..it's the best compliment I've ever heard so far. Wish The Weeknd watched this video.
I agree. He's one of the performers I must see before I die. Omg his live vocals are so incredible and the production and visuals are fire. Love his music so much. The lyrics, the angelic vocals, the performance, the orchestration, how he flawlessly blends musical genres, instruments, and decades to make something wholly original, while singing from his own unique perspective, he's the true definition of an artist to me. He's a musical & creative genius and one of the best to ever do it.
This was efffing awesome! What a performance and show the weekend put on! Watched from the UK and just wanted to be there watching it live. You yanks should be proud of such a good singer and performer!

Only The Weeknd can perform one of his first SoundCloud songs at the Super Bowl 😤🔥
Fun fact is 7th february in toronto city will be known as the weeknd day
when i heard that this morning i decided2pretend that i am Candian ,so that i can celebrate, lol
I think just because there was no crowd and people actually had to watch him, of course since there’s no other performances right now, people held this to such a high standard. I personally loved it. My favorite from the past few years
No crowd there was 26 thousand people there
Prince, The Weeknd, Michael and Beyoncé.
🐐🐐🐐🐐
I think Prince MJ Beyonce and Lady Gaga are top 4.For me Abel is coming to number 5 because he did amazing due to covid
@@yagzzorlu5388 frrr yoo
That’s disrespectful to Prince and MJ. There performances will remain untouchable!!
@@AFellowCyberman mad at what? The weeknd performance was great, but to start comparing it to Prince and MJ is pretty disrespectful in my opinion
I thought it was amazing I cant understand people hating on it.This year's show only had 25k people due to Covid.Weeknd did what he could do best and it was incredible.Top 5 for sure
Omg I literally cried omg omg
His parents must be soooooooooo...... proud omggggg I wish I would be related to him 😭😭
He grew up with no father so nobody ever son him
House of balloons pulled the whole performance together so well
Just bought my Amsterdam After Hours Tour ticket for freaking October 2022, still stocked tho. Can't wait, what a performance!
That transition from House of Balloons to Blinding Lights was angelic!
when he was performing I had TEARS in my eyes literal TEARS
He’s a God
If nobody else can see MJ vibes from this performance especially the army style choreography on the pitch.
This is the best performance I've ever seen
Imagine witnessing that shit live
I’d bow down to him like he’s my God
This was efffing awesome! What a performance and show the weekend put on! Watched from the UK and just wanted to be there watching it live. You yanks should be proud of such a good singer and performer!
abel killed it imo! i was sooo glad when he pulled up hob for the og XO fans! he's grown so so much!
i wouldn't imagine what's gonna be his performance if we do not have a safety protocols or just a normal world
I think it will be rocking.Like this one was still banger and it has so many protocols.Weeknd needs to perform for halftime show again 3 or 4 years later

Imagine if it wasn’t family friendly show. He would make it more darker than usual like Save your tears MV
It would be far better than this one and people would still find reasons to fucking complain lmao
Best half time show I've seen. So well put together considering COVID19 etc. Well done Abel!
Man I’ve watched every reaction on UA-cam of this show and this is my second time watching your reaction I just can’t get enough form this amazing show 🔥🔥🔥
me and my mum got emotional watching it too, he's just so incredible and from starting with nothing, he really worked his way up. he's so different and naturally talented because most of the artists these days have been to singing schools that just got them an immediate record deal, but this guy truly worked for it and he's the greatest artist of this generation.
Your outro had me in tears.. You’re absolutely right... Throughout this shitty year we’ve been blessed with Abels music and some days,, that would be the only thing that would keep me going. Thank you Abel for everything and thank you jon for the video
i cant believe how just about EVERYBODY it feels like completely shit on this performance. it was absolutely amazing and better than many other half time shows
Not everyone, majority is positive. Just stupid people hated it!
ikr
As a fan of The Weeknd THIS is the reaction video I needed to see 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Haters...smh oh well they can’t appreciate how well he did and the story behind...also remember this is still during Covid where the crowd has lesser of a influence yet he managed to hype them... and still he puts in a bit of HOB...sheesh I’m just proud and happy for him
Fans understand how important this was. Who cares about anyone else! XO FOREVER!
Everybody’s opinion is valid, you can’t call all critics “haters” that’s why it’s called “critique” I’m a huge fan, I own every album, but I found this halftime a bit sleepy compared to last year.
To see him go this far still amazes me!!! I can still remember first discovering him in 2011, and you couldn't even find an image of him from a google search. Literally watching his performance brought a rush of joy that could not end a smile to witness this star touch every era of his music career. He's definitely become a household name after this performance.
I enjoyed the performance but did it seem like the music was louder than his vocals throughout it?
I would agree
Listen with headphones it sounds better
NFL recorded it maybe something was with their equipment coz the live event insta story was loud and clear
Yeah, not gonna lie that kinda ruined it a bit for me. But it definitely sounds better with headphones
Yeah the production seemed a bit off but apart from that I loved his performance
15:47 Man oh man. The first time i saw this part of the video, i started crying. To see an artist i have been listening to religiously for the past 8 years come so, so, so far, i could not be any more happier. The emotion in his voice, you can just hear how proud he is, how happy he is, and so are we, the new and the old XO fans.
your metaphor with the way his career and this moment is like a boss fight was really well put
Seeing him live in February 2022 CANT WAIT
The amount of shit I've seen on twitter about people saying it was shit is unbelievable. The performance was absolutely stunning and took some of his songs to levels i didn't even know they could go to. Couple tears rolled down my face as I'm so proud of this man. XO
Me: I need to take a shower
Jon: uploads
Me: I guess I can smell a little bit longer
😂😂 legit me man i smell expired
@@loretzoaxel7302 "I smell expired" 🤣😂
I think all the real fans got emotional throughout this performance
Absolutely love jons passion for music and the way he views it, that was one of the most magical performance I’ve ever seen, genuinely wanna see the weeknd live next year at the O2, keep up the great work Jon my guy 🔥🔥🙏🏻🙏🏻
I almost shed tears of joy. It really did feel like such a moment
Even this show deserves Grammys 😁
Oh my I just noticed he re-created the After Hours album cover after the conclusion of Blinding Lights
I was clapping in the end at the same time when you started to clap. The performance was GREAT!
Thanks for reaction! Bless your soul!
8:13 fun fact, The Weeknd used to have awful stage fright. To get over his fear, he called his manager and demanded to be booked for a hundred shows in less than a year. Fuckin legend
XO - our boy made history last night 🖤
