  • In this episode of Four Play we compare the 8-bit home console and handheld conversions of the classic Namco arcade game Battle City. But which conversion is the best - Nintendo NES, ColecoVision, Nintendo Game Boy or Bit Corp. Gamate? You decide!

My thoughts: A really interesting array of different versions this week that are all quite different from each other whilst keeping the core gameplay. I'd say the best one is the Famicom/NES, because it's the most authentic to the original arcade game and has loads of different levels to play through. Next up I'd say ColecoVision, which is pretty hard but impresses in most areas. Then I will say Game Boy, which I enjoy playing but the added scrolling makes it feel like a very different game and also makes it a lot easier. And in last place the Gamate version, which is actually pretty playable for the most part but the horrendous sprite flicker is quite off-putting.

Just started collecting for ColecoVision so I'll need to keep an eye open for Tank Wars, thanks for posting.

I remember playing the original Arcade version, Tank Battalion, back in the early 80's. Always enjoyed it. Nice that this updated version has a lot more options. The Famicom port is, by far, the best but the ColecoVision is a lot of fun as well.

Battle City was one of the games I enjoyed playing in my old cartridge of 52 games in the NES clone console I had, Top Game. I've never heard of the other versions shown here... And it's impressive for me to see that I had the best version of them all, even though the ColecoVision (best opening screen, in my opinion, even with a different title) and the Game Boy have quite decent versions. Can't say anything positive about what I've seen on Gamate, except that the opening soundtrack was a good surprise.
