    The nice thing about the Black Box series is that the covers show you exactly what you'll be seeing on the TV screen. And when playing Wild Gunman, it helps to have the Zapper tucked in your pants pocket barrel first if you want to do that "Quick Draw Shooting from the Hip" kinda thing.

      Yes, that was in stark contrast to what was common in the 2600 era, when covers were works of art that had little to do with the actual graphics, although Activision games did reproduce game graphics on cartridge labels

    Cool video, but man, the PAL boxes looks soooo much better!

    Even today, I think the graphics capabilities of the NES were very good for an 8 bit system, especially pertaining to the true multi-colored multi-sized and quite intricate sprites. The sound system on the other hand, not so great. The C64 still beats it in that department anyway.

      The NES does benefit from more sound channels though, the SID really should have been 4 channel to make it easier to play music and sound effects.

    Excitebike and Mach Rider are fun games, shame they didn't have save capability of some kind for the track design. A password feature would have been great to share created tracks, though considering the time frame the passwords would probably be on the long side (Though again if it did have a password feature you know someone would have figured it out by know and created a ROM made to make a random track generator with the password system).

      Yeah I love Excitebike, that would have been a good feature to have.

      @@TheLairdsLair Ya ice climber i sup the5re. IO played ice climber a tone of times inthe arcade qctualy, never on my nes. My local arcade had the nintende vs system where u sit and 2 sides to it so i culd play TENNIS but both player shave their own screen and both playhers are at the bottom b ecuase they got threir own screen! but on there anyway they owuld rotate with more vs games so Super mario bros I playhed there first, and vs castlecvcania I played that way too and iof course ice climber. I wonder if vs tenis mame allows for 2 windows so separate liek the arcade so 2 players can both be onthe botom where the more detail is.

      @@TheLairdsLair I have a soft spot for Ice Climber too. It's a clever concept, and collecting vegetables at the end of each stage is cool

      Originally yes, it was advertised with one and it was only changed just before release.

    The Legend of Zelda was never a black box game the cover that is shown was done by a 3rd party custom box artist same goes for Punch Out.

    • @TheLairdsLair
      @TheLairdsLair  9 днів тому +3

      Both Zelda and Punch Out were advertised as black box games, the fan made box is an exact recreation of what was shown in those catalogues/adverts.

      @@TheLairdsLair A CES flyer at a trade show advertising upcoming releases dose not make it official. It was a prototype/concept art that can change at any time, and it did. I saw the Martin Lindell X (twitter) post with the CES flyer it was not for general public viewing just something to show off future releases to potential clients attending that are printed way in advance especially in the 80's (were printing at the 11th hour is not possible). The main point is that they are still not official black boxes, Nintendo changed them before production started. There are only 30 official black box titles. All official advertising to the public is with the official artwork we all know & love not the CES prototype/concept art.

      And the description already makes this clear . . . . . .
