  • The Celtics opened up summer league with good performances from Jaden Springer, Baylor Scheierman, and JD Davison. Anton Watson also did well, Neemias Queta was Neemias Queta, and Jordan Walsh was not great. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal gets into all of their performances, what's translatable to the regular season, and what might be fool's gold.

I'm never high on draft picks in general, particularly this team considering we're coming off a championship season with almost entirely everyone back (no Oshae). Having said that, most of these guys with great performances will never see this amount of play nor get these looks. Baylor however, I thought was impressive. He looked shaky in the beginning but quickly found his grounding and made some great passes. He seemed to understand the pace and made winnings plays. A steal here, an assist here, a rebound and pushing the ball here. Just great indicators of a decent role player. It definitely felt that he was trying to figure out the game to help the team as opposed to just scoring or making a play. I don't know, I was genuinely impressed by him.
He needs to get stronger for one to help take hits defensively and he'll need to be tenacious to deny the ball because he will be bullied.

Baylor I have no question he will get better. The two guys I want to see improve and be contributors off the bench are Queta and Springer.

Queta & Springer have both proven to be capable of contributing to NBA basketball and Baylor has had a good performance so far. We should be more concerned about Walsh.

@@mikotagayuna8494agreed. queta has a clearer path to PT than baylor, springer and walsh. Only 1 of those 3 is going to get situational rotation mins (early in the season when Al sits). Walsh has a tough road ahead. Its between baylor and springer for now.

@therealdarrell282 Queta needs to work on staying out of foul trouble. Have to continue to thank Daryl Morey for Springer
I heard Shaq's comments about the Celtics, and we had it easy, and he was talking BS about them throughout the playoffs. In the end, he had an egg on his face, and now he has an egg on his. He had it easy during that championship run in the early 2000s with the Lakers. He even got bailed out by referees when they were playing against the Sacramento Kings, all because they wanted a bigger market in the NBA finals and not the talented small market Sacramento Kings.

Agree on JD: I want to see what he does game to game. Agree Walsh looked entirely out of sorts (and doesn't look any bigger). The guy I watched most closely was Watson--definitely want to see more.
Kinda hoping these guys can win a few so they play more games and we can observe more.

Wash, rinse, repeat. They are coping hard. They rely heavily on one NBA player, Jimmy Butler. They don't have consistent role players. They went to the finals twice, but they ran into better teams, and Jimmy had no assistance. The Celtics have more and rely on the Jays a lot. They have consistent role players who can go off any night.
Heat fans = Delusional; I’m with stupid.

Springer is a great candidate to be groomed to become Holiday's successor

  • @mctaguer

So, the question I have is, do we think Springer is capable of consistent dribble penetration into the paint?

    • @TheRobversion1
      @TheRobversion1 3 місяці тому +2

SL? yes. regular season? doubt it. He will have to rely on having a consistent 3pt jumper. he doesnt have PPs dribble package, jrue's strength or d.white's floater.

Jordan had a bad game. Let’s hope he can turn it around. Is Baylors shot slow for the nba? His defense was really rough. He looked much better shooting after he settled down. His passing is better than I thought. Liked Springers confidence. His ability to drive and dish was surprising and great to see. Strong 21 year old. If this kid can continue to improve offensively wow Celtics may have gotten a steal because we already know he has the tools to be elite defensively. The moment you mentioned when he tried to do it himself at the end after a great defensive play and not passing is exactly what he needs to work on. He is improving I feel but he needs to really move on that.

John, I love the podcast and have been listening for like 7 years. But I think you too often talk to your listeners like they are children. For example “don’t overreact to summer”league and telling us what translates. I think Celtics fans in general (with a few exceptions) but especially your listeners are pretty smart and understand basketball. I wish you would spend more time breaking down each played game and less talking down the players on how they did won’t be the same in the nba. That is a given.

It's not meant to come off that way. It's meant to be real about it and to counter some of the other things being said elsewhere. It's more of a reminder than anything else

Funny how the Heat just sent Jaime Jaquez to the summer league when he is already their starter. They desperately want some brownie points for beating the Celtics in a meaningless competition.
