  • What's a chain ball? Watch and see. 😎
    In this episode, we finally leave Brunswick, Georgia and head north to continue our cruise of America's Great Loop. We're having a lot of fun because everything we see now as we cruise north is new to us.
    As we set the hook for our first night at anchor we had our first encounter with at dreaded chain ball. You won't see the heavy work downstairs, but you'll certainly hear a bit of it. And I quote: "Ooo, me back!"
    Once again you can see the value of our "marriage saver" headsets as we communicate between the foredeck and the chain locker without adding difficult communications to what was already a stressful situation. If you're a boater, a good set of headsets (link below) makes a huge difference to your everyday operations. And come to think of it, they're a valuable tool for RVers too!
    Thank you for watching! We appreciate you.
    Guy and Vickie, and Sailor too!

    Love the videos, especially the parts where you show the reality of certain operations like anchoring. Lot of videos talk about it but don’t show what really goes on. Appreciate it so much. Working towards a 2026 September departure on the great loop from Lake Michigan. Looking for the right boat now.

      Thank you for your encouragement! That anchor ball thing was an adventure, but wait till you see what we went through a couple days ago. 😎
      We will post that video in a few weeks and it will probably have a title that refers to a battery meltdown or something like that.😬 That event was exciting - even a bit scary - but it gave us a great opportunity to meet some wonderful people at Grand Manor Marina and visit the beautiful little town of Belhaven, NC while we sorted out the problem and put things back together. This is a wonderful place to turn lemons into lemonade.
      Best wishes for great success in your boat hunt and preparation for the Great Loop.

      Why, thank you!
      Keep in mind that was our first day of the cruise. It was all downhill after that until we docked for an overnight 8 days later!
      Things don't remain as they are. 😉

    Why do you want so much line out in 21 feet? What’s the benefit of being so far from the anchor?

    • @CruisingOnward
      @CruisingOnward  Місяць тому

      There are general rules of thumb for how much line or chain to put out when anchoring but we tend to put out a ratio of about 3-5:1 (i.e., feet of chain per foot of depth from our bow roller-ours is about 9 feet above the water-to the seabed) when you drop for a temporary hold (e.g., stopping for lunch or waiting on a lock or bridge opening), about 7:1 for an overnight with a bit of current or chop, and maybe 10:1 or even more for stormy conditions.
      These are approximates that depend on a few factors, such as how close the shore or other boats are, expected winds and waves, currents and tides, and the type of seabed (e.g., grassy, muddy, rocky), In this case, our ratio wasn't as high as we would have liked, but we were kinda close to the shore in an area affected by an 8 foot tide or so.
      Great question! ⚓️⚓️

    Wow. That sounded like hard work. You said “lesson learned.” So what has to be different?

    • @CruisingOnward
      @CruisingOnward  Місяць тому +1

      We should have removed all the chain from the chain locker before we left the docks to ensure it was clean and stowed properly. We trusted that it was ready to go, but should have confirmed it to be so.
      Lesson learned. 😎🤓😉

    Does the dinghy take the same kind of fuel? Does it hold 20 gallons? A discount is a discount!! Get creative. 🙄

    • @CruisingOnward
      @CruisingOnward  Місяць тому +1

      The dinghy uses gasoline. That's a great idea and maybe they would have combined (we didn't think of that, actually), but we didn't have room in our dinghy tanks anyway.
