You’re so good to throw in the tip about full arm movements, not just flicking the razor with your wrist. When I started wet shaving I kept nicking my neck, for that reason. With a cartridge (especially one that flexes to keep the angle right) I would almost carelessly shave. With a DE I was being good about the angle, but my strokes were more similar to the cartridge style. Once I used a full arm movement my shaves got more comfortable and rarely nicked myself anymore.

Another great shave, man. One little "golden key" (if you will) to shaving that I've kept since I've discovered it has been something that's not even related to product. And that is water: cold water to be precise. Matt from Razor Emporium mentioned this a few times on some of his videos related to shaving with sensitive skin, and he tells a lot of his customers who might be getting a ton of irritation or other issues to do a cold water shave with EVERYTHING cold: wetting the brush, lathering the soap, wetting your face, cleaning the razor off between your cuts...everything. The only time you'd probably use hot water is to clean your brush, razor, & razor blade off at the end once you're done.
At first I was kind of skeptical, but I tried just shaving with cold water at first (with warm brush & warm lather)...and it was pretty awesome and my results improved. Then I switched to wetting brushes and lathering with cold water...and it has been nirvana ever since (well, mostly). Not every shave is the best, naturally, but my level of irritation has dramatically reduced between shaves and I CANNOT go back to hot shaves now; they irritate me so much. So maybe try a cold shave with everything cold for a few weeks and see how you feel! 😁

Yeah, it doesn’t work for me. I’ve tried it. I use Luke warm water and it’s the best for me. Cold water just destroys my neck when I’m shaving it. I need to loosen up my hairs and get them to stand straight up. Glad it works for you and others. Just not for everyone

That fortnight experiment of cold water everything with only one pass every two days (from Matt at Razor Emporium) was what I mentioned to you in my comment on the phone-in video. So far, so good, but there are still two or three shaves to go.
I may still go back to your second pass against the grain on the lower neck technique if all-cold is inferior. The main variable so far seems to be how often one shaves.
BBS is an ideal, and most men can't do it without major irritation of some sort. I believe that a DFS is the realistic goal for most of us. The era of cartridge razors has made too many of us lazy, and your point about as few strokes as possible is well-stated.
I will ask skeptics of DE shaving about their making five passes with one stroke of their Mach V; they have no answer. 🤔

Iam 45 years old and all these years Iam using Gillette's disposable razors. I got fed up with those lately. Bad quality, harming the environment, not enough sharp and irritating my face a lot. I watched some of your videos about double edged razors and I ended up to purchase as a beginner a Henson a13 mild. When I will receive it and test it I will write my comment about that. Thank you for your good job and your passion about the wet shaving. Greetings from Greece.

I want to thank you for all the great videos, especially the ones regarding Henson. My soon to be 17 year old nephew just started shaving. His deadbeat dad (a whole other story) just threw an electric at him and said "here you go." Poor kid is suffering from razor rash and ingrown hairs. And of course, since he's still a teen, he's having to fight that stuff alongside acne. I just ordered him a Henson mild in Blue, along with Cella's 'Bio' formula shaving cream and after shave splash and balm for sensitive skin, along with a nice boar brush to help him exfoliate as well as lather. Your videos helped me make that decision. I think the Henson mild with its built in angle will set him on the right path.

Not only do you see soap trails when the angle is off but it also goes silent. Both visual and audio cues with that thing. Can't go wrong. Congrats to the giveaway winner!

This Christmas I replaced my Merkur 34C. I had heard of the Henson and that is what made me find you. I was looking up reviews and ended up getting the AL13 mild, a Leaf Twig and a Rockwell 6C (can't pass up the Christmas sale price). So far one of my problems is the Henson is almost perfect. I keep wanting to shave with it. I am planning to force (yes force) myself to use the Twig during Feb and probably use the Rockwell during March. Also thanks for the blade reviews. I stuck with the Astra greens for a year and just started picking up some other blades and honestly they make an unbelievable difference. The tugging I get from an Astra in the old Merkur 34C kept making me thing the blade was dulling after one use. For some odd reason the Astras give me a tugging pulling sensation. I guess we all have blades that work or don't. Anyway checked out the Feathers, Nacets and Personna Comforts and all are giving an easy 5 shaves per blade. I am automatically cycling out a blade after 5 shaves but could probably get more. Thanks again for your videos. They are informative and you have a way that makes me feel like you are trying to sell anything while also not just watching someone shave. There is always some gem in the conversation that keeps me hooked. Don't change your format cause it works like no other.

@@Shamoneee If you added a Timeless TI68 you would have my favorite four. I always have a blade in the Twig just to get in close around my nose no matter what I use. However I will admit the Henson is just slightly better for me than the Rockwell. Basically I get more perfect shaves out of the Henson. However the Rockwell does a great job and you can set the plates to your blade and how much growth you want to take off. Of those three you can't go wrong with whatever you pick. I honestly can recommend all three of them.

So happy with my henson TI in mild. i usually do the weekly shave so a medium might be on order soon. Thayers, alum block, preshave oil, good soaps, lots of hydration, Nivea stuff, good DE blades, all things i've learned from this channel (and not in that order) really love the Thayers part of the routine, nice and refreshing.

I have similar issues getting a good shave. Lucky for me it was easy to troubleshoot. You see, I was trying different blades on a daily basis in one of my open comb Gillette's. Seems to be a little too aggressive for me and combined with the blade changes it started to get bad around day 5. Like you, I decided to go back to basics. Took four days off from shaving to let my face recover a bit and then, switched to my Gillette Fatboy 'goto' razor and my standard blade and all is back to being right in the universe.
I also found out that my face does not like warm water when shaving. Nothing but cold water for this guy.

I highly recommend you try a sharper blade than the Astra. I now use Gillette Platinum blades and love them. They are sharper than Astra yet just as smooth.
