Considering I only built my PC for video editing and music production at similar cost (and I don't have a HDR monitor as good as what's on this laptop) - this is insane performance and value and on battery power too. And I say that as someone who is a PC performance user my whole life. The pending M4 Ultra Studio desktop will be the final nail.

You're right, I might change my windows workstation for the M4 Ultra, hopefully the leaked iMac Pro is true and it has the M4 Ultra so I would just go to that route. Unless the 5090 is so good Mac would be the clear choice for professionals.

The M4 ultra will be insane! Things can only get better with 256 gb of unified memory with 4 media encoders and everything so close together in the soc.
Rumors are saying it’ll be one unified SOC instead of two stitched together.

I learned that key shortcut to switch between windows of the same application, cause I had the same headache as you about that coming from a windows at home, mac at work lifestyle:
In chrome with 2 different windows open, press command and "~" which is the button between escape and tab at the upper left, 2nd row. It's called a "tilda." This only lets you switch between windows in a given program, so I think Windows OS is still more satisfying to use, because you can alt+tab across multiple applications and windows, but (unless I'm still missing something) in Mac OS, you have to use 2 key shortcuts if the window that is highlighted isn't the one you want (command+ "tab" to get into chrome, then command+ "~" to switch to a different chrome window than whichever is the first highlighted one.)
Hope this helps, I was able to figure out what your chat was referring to, but thought some extra context would help :)

    Actual comment:
I Watched the VOD out of curiosity while I wait for your edited video on this, and my goodness it really *is* absolutely mental to get that kind of performance, at such a low power draw, with the portability of a laptop. Especially if it's a business expense, it's worth considering. I'll probably keep saving and compare prices with the M4 Max Mac Studio in the summer. I'm torn because I usually live the workstation life, but having the *option* to do some portable work might be cool...hard to quantify if you haven't done it before.
    Cheers!

I know I'm late to the party as I just watched the video... but to snap a window in Mac OS, use the fn+control and then a directional key. Also to switch between open windows you can use control+down key then select the window you want.. if you tab while in that view you can switch between different applications. Hope this helps.

Great work as always. I think you can focus on external HDs comparisons and mini servers using the new thunderbolt 5 capabilities until the PC markets get their sh*t together. How do they compete with internal drive for savings. Also, what about adding an external GPU using thunderbolt 5? You can apply that to the upcoming mac studio and by the time you wrap with mac studio the PC industry might catch up again. Good luck!

FN+Control+ left / right for easy snapping windows
I love preview on Mac, missing this so much at work
When dragging with option - You don’t need to go to the edge of the side, also sometimes very fast
If you do alt tab and need to switch between two different windows of app - just click up arrow ;)
I hope it helps Tou to be more effective on Mac
Thank You for great video - this one is way better than synthetic, useless benchmark videos 👍

If you do the same test with Davinci Resolve can you create a multicam with 4 different h264 or h265 clips and play it back in reverse? Usually this is what makes my edits a nightmare. When you play it back forward it is absolutely fine but when you start playing it back in reverse, it is so choppy, literaly unusable on the M1 Max, despite of the playback resolution, storage used, whit or without colorgrade or anything, it is just choppy as hell. The GPU and CPU are used at 50%, I can't figure out what causes the issue.
Thank you in advance and once again, thank you the amazing work and all the effort to bring to us such an insightful tests!

thanks for the cool coverage, what do you think about the keyboard? I got mine yesterday and compared to my MacBook Air M2 it feels "loosey" or wiggling and in the middle of the keybord, the keystrokes "sounds" and feels other then at the edges, like that there is some "room" underneath and procue kind of an "echo" ... is this some known limitiations of the new keyboards of the M MacBook Pros or did I get a faulty one?

The beauty of Apple Silicon's Unified Memory is that if you have plenty of memory, the system can allocate more memory to the GPU-potentially even exceeding the VRAM available on an RTX 4090.

So i tested my m4 max 40 gpu, 64gb ram and 2tb storage, i dropped 4 timelines with 4k fottage from 2-4hour in length each and dropped one effect on one of the timeline about 4 hr long (2 of them 4hr long and 2 other were around 2hr) and i tried to play playback and it was showing me clown death balls. Glorified m4 max has its limits, i dont feel like 5k usd is justified with not being able to play smoothly with 4 timelines of 4k footage 2-4hr long.
