I know everyone praises this ost to no end, but this really is the game that made me realize I like video game music. Every track is a banger. Every single one, like whoever composed this just couldn’t let a single song be anything less than pure energetic bliss.
Ah, Chill Penguin...back when I was fairly new to gaming, I was so thrilled at my ability to flawlessly dodge all his attacks, that I actually wrote down my strategies in the back of the instruction book.
X:Wow! Ice Penguin! This is so noisy! Chill Penguin:I am Chill Penguin! X:So Frozted, Man! You gonna kidding me! Chill Penguin:What did you say?....Bitch more.

You're not the only one. This was also my first Mega Man game. After many tries, I left and went to Storm Eagle's stage with the leg piece, beat him, and came back later and beat Chill Penguin with Fire Wave. That's the next best strategy if you lose to Chill Penguin. Storm Eagle which is easy with the leg power up, Flame Mammoth, Chill Penguin...
You know, the whole "double damage from an uncharged shot while dashing" thing actually makes a little sense, since the shot has more momentum behind it.

MAVERICK DATA Subject: Chill Penguin Title: Lord of the Snowy Plains Occupation Prior to Going Maverick: Lieutenant Colonel of the Maverick Hunters' 13th Polar Battalion Unit Bio: Chill Penguin was originally assigned to a base in Antarctica, a assignment he finds boring. After joining Sigma, Penguin was then assign to a abandoned missile base in the snowy mountain overlooking Abel City. Same. I got to him today but I can't even beat him, as I can't tell what attack he's going to use and react fast enough to dodge them. (Plus by the time I reach him my health is depleted from those snowballs, so with two lives I only have one shot at fighting him with full health before game over) I know he's supposed to be super easy so it's probably not the game, it's me, I suck donkey-rooster at 2D shooter games. Unlike in X2, they're not named when you put the select bar over them, only when you actually select and go there. I only picked out Chill Penguin (widely recommended first stage) because he's the only one who looks like a penguin.
@@MotoJoee I beat the penguin once. But mainly because his attack repeated in a way that was easy. The reason this video makes it look easy is one, I think they have auto fire and also everything seems to die easier in this video, you just shoot and blows up.
The dashing and firing to inflict double damage was a programming error in the first game; but in the X games to follow, it was programmed intentionally. Just a fun little fact!
This was the first time i played a mega man game and it was amazing. My grandpa has a snes emulator. Unlike any other game i played, this actually required me to use my head and memorize the bosses patterns and get my timing just right. Really challenging but rewarding. I made it to the very final boss when sigmas head is in that lion machine but couldnt finish because i had to come back home. When i first tried this game, every boss destroyed me right away and i thought it would be impossible
An interesting point you left out about Chill Penguin is how if he takes damage in midair, he immediately drops back down. It's a bit of a knockback effect on him and stops his wind ability.
So you've come...X, everybody knows girls born after 1993 can't cook. All they know is charge they phone, eat mcdonalds, twerk, be bisexual, eat hot chip and lie.
This is one of my favorite games ever! I've had it on SNES forever, longer than I've been alive. lol I know this game inside and out . :P And have quite fond memories
I don't really think of Chill Penguin's stage as a traditional "first stage". Yeah sure, it has an important powerup and it relatively easy, but it just doesn't really _feel_ like a first stage to me. It's very rare that a platformer starts out with a winter stage like this, it's typically a more traditional snow-free area with relatively upbeat music. One example of a traditional "first stage" to me would be Cut Man in "Mega Man 1", or Skull Man in "Mega Man 4".
Somehow I doubt X would ever be able to keep up a peaceful life, Dr. Light. You know, waking up in the morning, fixing himself a bowl of cereal, accidentally blasting a hole in the wall... Yeah no.
@Dekaar Needless to say I am going to be abusing this damage boost quite often throughout this run... XD There were several bosses I ended up fighting with the buster, so it really helps speed up all of these fights. Helps clear out generic enemies a bit faster, too.
@maximoluver Yeah, I had not done any recording in quite awhile, so I guess I did not get the settings quite right. Probably got messed up as I think the volume settings I use are different between my weekly broadcast and game recordings.
@OmegaWeaponX25 My main gripe is the game is a helluva lot less fun without this particular power-up, and you have to do a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOT of back-tracking if you want to collect everything if you put off the dash-boots since so many things require them. For those who want to 100% the game with any sort of efficiency whatsoever, this stage is a forced first... XD
you can't expect me to believe that you can do all stages perfectly in one try. there must some outtakes that happen now and again. you know like taking damage or dying in the stages. be sure to insert any blooper reels at the end of video or after the series
I used to play games to perfection. Replaying them to the point that I was doing no damage speed runs. Haha. I had less games but more fun playing them. This was one of those. I cant remember if I was playing it on GBC or my Nintendo DS.
With all due respect, playing this as a 6 year old in 1995 is a completely different story in terms of difficulty. This game was a challenge when it came out.
You should see the remake of this game, Maverick Hunter X. The dash ability is optional and in Flame Mammoth's stage. To me, it's a fair trade-off since I usually find Mammoth pitifully easy.
@TheJeppesk It means I got caught for not proof-reading again. XD (I am surprised there are so few typos considering this fact.) AH WELL! Now if only it was not the very first freaking text-box... XD
@PinkKittyRose Every boss in every game in the X Series takes 1 damage from uncharged buster shots. In fact, they even take the same amount of damage from charge shots -- the differences start coming in X5 and 6 where bosses have different size lifebars. Not to mention the boss health increases overall by a great deal past X4 (as well as the power of charge shots).
@Voyd211 There is a problem with doing that though. The Storm Tornado might not damage you, neither does him flapping his wings to blow you back but if he does it constantly, 2-3 times in a row, without dashing you WILL get blown off the edge.
Shotgun Ice has the bonus of reflecting in 5 different directions when it hits a wall. However I still didn't find it that useful in the game until a ceartin point.
@PinkKittyRose Haha, yeah that's what I noticed x) Needless to say, I'm very impressed. Even though Chill Penguin's stage isn't very difficult, it has it's moments which really threw me off back when I tried playing this game Roahm-style. Ah well, I'm looking forward to this. Especially those 3 bosses.... Looking at you, Sting Chameleon, Spark Mandrill and Launch Octopus.
The reason why this isn't my favorite Megaman X game is because of the fact that it forces you to start at the wintery stage. That to me is a troll. Come to think of it, several Megaman games did something very similar.
@IBelisariusLP Did not keep count, but Chill Penguin's the only stage that went super smooth... XD I got too reckless in Storm Eagle by trying to rush... Stages after obtaining Chameleon Sting went pretty smooth, minus the final boss. Gods that boss is a pain to do no damage... XD Tempting as it was to just use the Hadoken, I made sure to resist. And yeah, outtakes also eat up my harddrive space, which my ancient machine has very little of... XD
@Dekaar Nah, I recall in my practice runs that he was only taking 1 damage from uncharged, non-dash boosted shots. Heck, it may be that EVERY boss in the first 3 X games (maybe more) only take 1 from uncharged shots.
The most annoying parts of the stage are those propeller enemies and the snowballs, I cannot get past either without taking any damage. That said I always start the Chill Penguin fight with at LEAST half health. After he slaughters me I get one fight with him at full health, then game over, and have to go through the whole stage again, those propeller robots and snowballs, to fight him again. Rinse and repeat. I know he's supposed to be super easy, and the X series a lot easier than original series, so this pretty much tells me I suck at Mega Man. (I spent $50 for the X Legacy Collection on Amazon. While they have replacement for video rentals I wish they had video game rentals still just in case you find you're not as good at a game or simply not having fun with it)
@BradX8 Perhaps, but the armor just isn't that vital early on. Besides, what does she even need the armor for at all if she's doing a no damage run? :P
I'm a bit of a rebel then, Pink. I usually start with Storm Eagle. I don't think he's THAT hard without the dash power-up, and I love getting his Storm Tornado right off the bat. From there I just follow their weaknesses; Flame, Chill, Spark, Armor, Launch, Boomer, Sting. The same can't be said for the PSP remake though; Storm is much harder without dash thanks to the feather arrows he shoots while he's blowing you back; if you get hit by one, you're pretty much screwed.
I'm horrible at no damage runs, but I could manage to finish Chill Penguin without taking damage, same with the intro stage, minus the boss. If it weren't for the new picket men in Flame Mammoth's stage I'd be able to do a no damage run there too.
I'm really bad at this game. Whenever I try to beat chill penguin I always die. The double damage pellet thing doesn't work. The same with all the other bosses.
@PinkKittyRose At least you can quit levels halfway through without having to find/buy anything like in Mega Man 7. I found the levels quite enjoyable so I quite enjoyed playing through the levels twice in MMX, and later on, Maverick Hunter X.
@ShadowdaHedgie11 Yeah, since the game designers thought it was a brilliant idea to make backtracking MANDATORY... At least in this game it was only the Chill Penguin requires Flame Mammoth requires Chill Penguin issue, but in the later games... lets just say I do NOT enjoy backtracking in a short games like this.
