Great seeing the build and a new video. We have been on a 16 day trip around South Island New Zealand and I agree with you the build seemed perfect on paper but there will be some changes when I get home. Looking forward to the next video.
Thanks for always keeping it real. Your (and others') channel(s) has inspired me to get back out there- 5 weekends running, from Alsea to Alford. All in a 2WD 2003 Ford Escape that cost $300. (initially, no missing decimal places)
What an awesome spot! I Love the sound of water in the background, so relaxing. You’ve got great ideas and I plan to use some of them in my camping. Thanks for a great video !
Lol loved the magnet problem. I was thinking how, why you wouldn’t want your kitchen set up on a pull out drawer from under your bed. But when you woke up opened your door and looked out to see your table with stove and propane still out and set up was smart. One less thing to pack up before bed and one less thing to get back out and set back up to make breakfast in the morning. Oh and the size of that lamb chop was insane. Surprised you didn’t just take the butcher knife to use as a steak knife while eating it. Very interesting to see your friend who has the same truck and his take on the set up. Guess the rooftop tent makes more sense if traveling as a couple. But the shot with their puppy shows a major flaw. The fact their dog can’t get up and sleep with them. Our dog would be very upset if he was left behind after we climbed up to go to sleep.
Very astute observation on the kitchen pullout thing. I'm actually going to talk about this in next weekend's video, but that was completely unintentional serendipity. This is ALL a temporary rough draft...that table thing was an improvisation because I couldn't make a pullout work with the rest of my improvised temporary setup, but totally accidentally realizing I could leave the stove set up overnight...now I'm rethinking the whole thing!
We've found that when it gets dark the mosquitos come out in swarms! Never heard of that Thermacell but the candles we've been burning have been useless!
Right?? So perfect. Plus I think in the thumbnail image of my first video at this spot a year and a half ago, I literally used the phrase "down by the river" inspired by the Matt Foley sketches. :-)
Very good presentation. That truck is going to be a monster in a few months. This is nice and relaxing. It makes me want to get back to the mountains. Too much time at the coast lately but that ends soon.
Catching up on your vids...was off on my own adventure for the last 6 weeks in Owyhee Canyon north and south of Rome and all over Idaho. Incredible time I had around Owyhee Canyon all inspired by you and Jason/Primal Outdoors thank you, thank you, thank you....You switched to a carbon steel pan it looks like...nice.... Great job on the video....thanks for sharing!
Yes, after getting scolded countless times for my crappy non-stick pans, LOL, I finally followed up. I found myself diving down the unexpectedly deep rabbit hole of carbon steel geekery, but was quickly convinced. I absolutely *love* the pan and I think another one will be entering the stable soon. :-)
I love the simplicity of your rig, Don. Not a lot of disarray and mess going on. Well organized. I liked the Gazelle screen tent set up. The one thing I dislike are the the bug invasions and the Gazelle would certainly help to keep the "enemy" at bay. I have a bug screen for my van's sliding doorway and for the rear barn doors. However, I would prefer to sit outside to relax and eat. Beautiful campsite.
Great video!!! Love seeing the progress on the truck! Really getting the itch to get back out there and your videos always make that itch worse! 🤣 Good stuff and those bloopers were my probably my favorite yet!

What an amazing video, my friend! Nice camping! The nature is amazing.. Enjoyed watching. Cheers from Russia, ✌🙂 , and welcome to my channel about bushcraft! Bestregards, Yuriy!
5' bed vs 6' bed. I do a lot of truck camping. That one extra foot means you can post up and camp/sleep inside your bed/shell if need be. Without a tent.
As always great video Donald. I was wondering if that was the same spot you camped at with the Forester build update that time. Ironically enough that was the first video I ever saw of yours as I first discovered your channel! It's great to see you out of the garage and doing some further testing, but I do also enjoy the build videos. While you're not in a Suby anymore, there are still many things I learn from watching your videos and the decisions you make regarding your overlanding needs. As always, looking forward to the next one!
It was a pretty good spot. I am surprised you didn’t have a bunch of cars/traffic because it looked like you 2 were setup on the turnaround at the end of the road.
Don, always enjoy your practicality and cinematic anesthetic. Nice to see you out there! Like what you've done with your set up. I thought the bumper table was interesting when you first set it up. Then I saw you exit the canopy the next morning and I thought: that is genius. Any concerns about wildlife being attracted to the stove overnight? I can imagine that accessing the refrigerator in thr cab is gonna get old...
Well to be honest, the ability to leave the stove set up was purely accidental. The "table" was a really quickly thrown together improvisation to stand in for a future pull-out kitchen and it was just serendipity that it happened to work out that way...and it's now got me rethinking my whole kitchen approach. I'll be covering all this in next weekend's video actually. I'm not too worried about animals. While my stove has generally always been packed away when I sleep, virtually everyone else I have ever camped with over the years leaves their stoves out the whole time they're at camp. Dispersed camping like this, the wildlife is not accustomed to people as it can be in the vicinity of state park campgrounds. If I was camping in Yosemite National Park, you can bet that stove would get packed away for the night. :-) So far the fridge hasn't bothered me. I've just grabbed everything I need for a given meal at once. I originally thought I would incorporate it in the truck bed kitchen but there simply isn't the room. Two unexpected benefits of having the fridge in the cab are that on hot days, it is riding inside the air-conditioned cab, and at night, I can't hear the compressor cycle on and off as I would if it were in the canopy with me. :-)
Been watching your channel for over a year now but until last week I was living in Virginia, so far I'm loving living in Oregon but haven't really had the chance to hit any trails or hiking around here yet. My Crosstrek is still stock for now but I hope to find some subie-friendly trails to explore in the PNW!
In our few years worth of experience with the Thermacell, if you place it on a table at waist, etc, level the mosquitos hit anything exposed below the device..i.e. your legs, ankles, feet if in flip flops... have had the best luck when placing it on the ground. Thanks for the video, stay well.
5:30 I upgraded to a rechargeable thermacell from Costco because the portable ones dry up. You have to use it all the same day. The oil and wick in the rechargeable one lets you take it out when you need it (like 1hr in the backyard) and cap it when you don’t.
If you end up liking the Thermocell, I would get the backpacker edition. It threads right onto a can of fuel (like for a jetboil) and it'll save you a chunk of money for that reason alone. Those little tiny fuel charges are ridiculous. Love the video. Tomorrow I start welding up the bed rack for my Frontier. ✌️
Oohhh that sounds better! This was a bit of an impulse purchase, I think I was in a store looking for something else and saw the Thermacell, had been thinking about getting one, and was surprised by the (low) price...always assumed they cost more. So, I take it you have the backpacker edition and have been happy with how well it wards off mosquitoes?
@@softroadingthewest We got the USB rechargeable one with extended 20' zone. I think it works. www.amazon.com/dp/B08PDH936V/ref=dp_iou_view_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This was great! I loved the morning drone montage...so peaceful and captured the camp. It looks like the kithen is great...everything right where you need it! I'm curious, what's 4:27??
Great to see you back on the road again, thanks for taking us along! Is there a video where you go over your drone? Love to learn more about that someday!
No, but it's just a very basic DJI Spark which I bought used off eBay for very little money. It's my second Spark (my first one remains 200 feet up a tree somewhere) and I've crashed this one a number of times, including into a creek one time, haha. For that reason I just can't bring myself to put a thousand dollars or more up in the air. The Spark has a lot of limits but has the huge advantage of being cheap. :-)
Really thinking of getting a t6 to complement my t4 overland edition. Currently have an sj xt so not an option right now due to all the other crap I take along. Here in a couple of years if the Maverick does well and can be proven to be a good soft roader I may end up picking one up for a little more space.
LOL...It was lamb. Much easier to transport a side of lamb. :-) I swear it wasn't THAT big, somehow the lens angle and the relatively small pan made it look WAY bigger than it actually was. It was also riddled with bone and gristle and I probably consumed about a third of what seen. Ultimately not a great value per pound, haha.
Mosquitos/bugs can ruin a good trip. Two years ago I did an early spring camping trip to the northern Sierras. Right after thaw/snow melt. Got eaten alive, every piece of skin not covered by clothing/DEET. The scary thing was I got some kind of reaction/allergy. Bitten on the backs of my hands. They swelled up like balloons. Scary stuff. Mosquitos carry some bad Juju.
Garage Don = Trail Don, both are fun to watch. Love the outtakes :D By the way, I just had to reserve an URL with "SoftroadingTheNorth" so I might start a barely used blog when going Sweden/Norway/Iceland with my Fozzy, I hope you dont mind the similarity.
I look forward to seeing where you go! I really enjoyed Jordan's trek up through there. And while I've had my feet on the ground briefly in Iceland, I was not allowed to exit the airport. Iceland backcountry is definitely bucket list...looks incredible!
I swear by my Thermacell. I don’t go anywhere outdoors without one. Fire it up ASAP when you set up camp and don’t forget to change out the pads every four hours. I am my wife’s best insect repellent (they eat me instead of her), and the Thermacell is my best repellent.

As always, looking forward to the next one!
It was a pretty good spot. I am surprised you didn’t have a bunch of cars/traffic because it looked like you 2 were setup on the turnaround at the end of the road.
It was a little side spur, not a road. And it was midweek. Didn't see a soul once we got a certain distance out of the nearby small town.
I have the butane-powered thermacell, and it seems to work really well ... most of the time. Too much wind and your protection bubble just blows away.
Hi from your neighbor from Springfield Oregon.
So far the fridge hasn't bothered me. :-)
Have used thermally in 2 variations for 5 years in buggy new hampshire. It works extremely well unless there is wind.
Thank you, that is excellent information! I did have it sitting on my kitchen surface. I will try it on the ground next time!
@@softroadingthewest you're welcome my friend, found ya via Coyoteworks and you have a new subscriber. Thanks again.
VHB some small strips of steel to where you think you might wanna use the magnetic lights :)
or a magnet strip from a frig door seal
5:30 I upgraded to a rechargeable thermacell from Costco because the portable ones dry up. You have to use it all the same day. The oil and wick in the rechargeable one lets you take it out when you need it (like 1hr in the backyard) and cap it when you don’t.
That is excellent information, thank you
If you end up liking the Thermocell, I would get the backpacker edition.

@@softroadingthewest absolutely. I think it's the next best thing to deet. Which isn't the healthiest for us to be lathering up in all the time.
This was great! I loved the morning drone montage...so peaceful and captured the camp. It looks like the kithen is great...everything right where you need it! I'm curious, what's 4:27??
Those outtakes man 👌🤣
I saw Oakridge & for a second thought you ran south to Tennessee...
I'm a nerd, what can I say...
@@softroadingthewest Sounds like a plan!
Really thinking of getting a t6 to complement my t4 overland edition. Currently have an sj xt so not an option right now due to all the other crap I take along. Here in a couple of years if the Maverick does well and can be proven to be a good soft roader I may end up picking one up for a little more space.
What did you do with the other half of the cow?
LOL...It was lamb. Much easier to transport a side of lamb. :-)
I swear it wasn't THAT big, somehow the lens angle and the relatively small pan made it look WAY bigger than it actually was. It was also riddled with bone and gristle and I probably consumed about a third of what seen. Ultimately not a great value per pound, haha.
@@softroadingthewest you're living an awesome life. I always look forward to your next video. Great content. Really like the Frontier too.
The outtakes, 🤔🙄🤔😑 lol. We men of a certain age can totally relate.
Heh heh :-)
@14:25 That was hilarious lol🤣
Come up to Washington this summer! I know some cool spots.
Garage Don = Trail Don, both are fun to watch. Love the outtakes :D
By the way, I just had to reserve an URL with "SoftroadingTheNorth" so I might start a barely used blog when going Sweden/Norway/Iceland with my Fozzy, I hope you dont mind the similarity.
I look forward to seeing where you go! I really enjoyed Jordan's trek up through there. And while I've had my feet on the ground briefly in Iceland, I was not allowed to exit the airport. Iceland backcountry is definitely bucket list...looks incredible!
See what happens when you get a Frontier wet? They multiply! Please follow the rest of the directions and don't mod them after midnight. 😂
🤣🤣🤣
LOLOL Growing up in the 80s I absolutely adored that movie. :-)
What happens when you microwave a gremlin? BOOM! *ding!* Still one of the best movies ever.
Good morning 😃
I swear by my Thermacell. I don’t go anywhere outdoors without one. Fire it up ASAP when you set up camp and don’t forget to change out the pads every four hours. I am my wife’s best insect repellent (they eat me instead of her), and the Thermacell is my best repellent.
That's good to hear. I'm going to stock up on pads and butane and keep using it for now!
