    Thank you very much for these videos, they helped me a lot to improve my understanding of Chu shogi. I would really like you to release new videos about tactics and strategy in Chu shogi

    Summarizing the lion capture rules:
    1 - An attacking lion cannot capture an opposing lion if, at the start of the turn, the opposing lion was two squares away AND protected by another piece, UNLESS the attacking lion captures a non-pawn-non-go-between piece in the first step of the turn.
    2 - If a player captures a lion with a non-lion piece, during the opponent's next turn said opponent cannot capture the first player's lion with a non-lion piece.

    Just a clarification regarding the situation of "stalemate." Technically the king can still move into check and be captured (while in standard shogi, this is an illegal move). Main point is that there is no stalemate = draw like there is in western Chess. Kudos to GluttonyMain for pointing this out.

    • @DieFlabbergast
      @DieFlabbergast Рік тому

      There is the concept of check in xiangqi, but stalemate is a loss for the side unable to move, as it should be if the most basic rule of chess (= passing is not permitted) were properly observed. Stalemate as a draw is an artificial rule inserted into FIDE chess to make the endgame more interesting. Without it, many games would be a win simply by one side obtaining a king + pawn vs. lone king situation, which would lead to a) too many draws and more importantly b) too many boring draws (a draw is fine if it is a fighting draw), as in xiangqi and janggi where draw by insufficient material to mate are common at the top level.

    Hi! When will Chu option be available to play online at pychess site?

    • @DieFlabbergast
      @DieFlabbergast Рік тому

      Probably never: the board is too big for Fairy Stockfish, and Pychess is committed to having all its games playable against the AI, which is good, as there are far too few members to keep the site "alive" without play against an AI.

      @@DieFlabbergastyeah LiShogi sucks, you can’t computer practice Chu there. That said if they would just add FairyMax or one of the various additional engines it actually is possible to computer it once you tweak some settings.

      Of course, in Japanese the 獅子 is not really a lion, it is a mythical beast based on the lion. Lions didn't exist in East Asia. The Chinese knew of them from reports of Chinese traders and missionaries in South Asia and Central Asia, and maybe a few lions were presented to the Imperial Court by foreign potentates, via the Silk Road. As far as I know, until the modern era the Japanese had never seen a real live lion. This is why the animal is referred to in Japanese today as ライオン (lion), while the word 獅子 was used for the sculptured mythical beasts stationed outside the gates of Buddhist temples.

      The lion itself .. fine. The lion trading rules seem way overcomplicated.

      @@jsrodmanthis is just a portable travel sized Shogi of Dai Shogi, the actual middle Shogi. In Dai Shogi there is no lion trade rules so you can capture them if you want. I only play Chu for the travel size and foldable board. Aoyama go Banten sells the foldable Chu Shogi.

      Problem with Wa Shogi is that the rules are less defined. Theoretically it could be added to Lishogi, but it also doesn't have the demand that Chu Shogi did...

    another query about pieces that move in stages
    lets say there's a board position with lion finishing a move on 3-3 that has been attained 3 times
    i now move my lion step 1) to 3-3, and then step 2) from 3-3 to 4-3
    have i lost the game because i repeated board states in the first half of my move? or is it only the end state after my move that counts
