Even though it wasnt much like the other games and wasnt quite as good, I still think it was a very solid arcade shooter for the time. Its kind of underrated if you ask me.
Interesting take on this game. Indeed, DK3 feels... off, but I do credit Nintendo for daring to be different instead of following a repeat path. There's also a fair amount of strategy to be found in DK3, with certain quick decisions to be made; for example, do you get the Super Sprayer at the cost of sacrificing a plant (and extra bonus points)? I actually played DK3 in arcades more than the first two DK games. I liked the shooter aspect and the fact that the first two stages really allowed you to rack up points quickly before the difficulty really started ramping up. My loss arcade operator also cranked the volume of the DK3 machine, so it's synonymous with arcade memories for me. DK3 isn't the best in the series, but it's still a significant game for me.
I never even knew this game existed until a few months ago and I grew up in the NES heyday. Having played it now, I think it's OK. It's probably unfairly crapped on, but by the same token, I can see why people were disappointed.
Today must be Bizzaro day over at the CGR space station: Xbox One game being reviewed on the main channel and an NES classic game being reviewed on the undertow!
Wasn't this based on that Game & Watch game though? Isn't that why it's not really a department and isn't that why Stanley is there? They just brought Donkey Kong in instead?
This game wasn't even included on the Donkey Kong Classics game. :/ I think this game is ok sure it's not a normal Donkey Kong game but it's still fun.
Donkey Kong & Donkey Kong Jr. are pure classics. But DK3 - nah - it's not a great game and especially not a great Donkey Kong game. But there is also this black sheep Donkey Kong Jr. Math...
I guess that is more of the point to Donkey Kong 3, which I never actually knew was a "failure", I just always thought it was just "different"... however, yeah, if you are Disney, for example and Mickey Mouse has been your bread and butter for years, and then suddenly original new works take off, and you can do as many originals as you want and they all seem to be a hit, wither you mean to or not, Mickey Might take a back seat... and among the games like Mario, like Zelda, like Metroid, like Kirby, like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest... basically, Nintendo was king during that time, it didn't matter how much Donkey Kong sold to a degree, there was still a chance it would go to obscurity in that period, and even if it sold 2 less copies than the last, there would be no urgency to rush out a new game. Still, I think one would argue Super Mario World was a success, and it seemed to take even longer to get a real, new 2D mario game (not a Yoshi game featuring mario, but a real new 2D mario game). Nintendo will just hibernate their franchises from time to time it seems, success or not.
His earlier reviews were much more informative, but I guess since he became the star reviewer he just let it go to his head and be an obnoxious douche.
@CGRundertow, I like you guy, but you are an incredible Nintendo Fanboy. Even if you review bad games of Nintendo you always mention how awesome they are (in some small aspects). I really think you should play more Sega and PC-Engine Games. There are tons of great games on those systems. You mostly played the bad ones, no wonder why you deny Sega so much. But please take a look at the top Games on those Systems. I would love to hear something different from you than always praising Nintendo games...
The funny thing is, when I first played this game I didn't know much about it and hated it. And now that I know the common opinion, I actually don't hate it as much.

Donkey Kong 3. Now you know why he became Cranky.
I may be the odd man out, but I always really liked DK3. No, it's not the classic that DK and DKJR are, but I still love it.
I'm one of the 4 others who like it lol
DK, how would you rate this game: "Okay".
I never even knew this game existed until a few months ago and I grew up in the NES heyday. Having played it now, I think it's OK. It's probably unfairly crapped on, but by the same token, I can see why people were disappointed.
Stanley needs another chance!

i got the game with club nintendo points on my 3ds.... and i think it's and o.k game
I find DK 3 more fun and enjoyable than the first. It's 2 > 3 > 1. But Popeye pawns them all lol :D
Doll Face Popeye in the arcade was awesome.... Probably would put it on par with Donkey Kong Junior but it doesn't beat the original DK
They should have went back to the original game style, but just made the levels different and more complex. It would have been great.
I enjoyed it then and still do
I'm disappointed that Stanley has never been in a Smash Bros game..
DK on Super Game Boy is the best non-DKC DK game ever.
This game wasn't even included on the Donkey Kong Classics game. :/ I think this game is ok sure it's not a normal Donkey Kong game but it's still fun.
I think Donkey 3 isn't too bad, is it as classic as the previous 2 no but it's still a good game regardless.

I actually like this game. Yes it's different, but that's part of the reason I like it.
that's why you're a leafs fan, bunch of lunatic dumbasses who didn't win shit in half a century
I like an old video game because I'm a Leafs fan? Are you a professional idiot or are you maintaining your amateur status for the Olympics?
I guess we know why this was not included in the "donkey kong classics" on nes.
dont hate the sprayer, hate the game...that was cute
actually this was Crankys game. the Donkey Kong we all know and love today was Donkey Kong Jr. you cAn see however why Cranky is so cranky now I bet.

I remember seeing this in an arcade as a kid.
"ZOMG THERES A DONKEY KONG 3?!?!?!?!"
Then I played it.
and i said to myself....
"mewa;jk;dgao[itj"
This is why cranky kong is so cranky.
This game was a total button-masher if I ever saw one.... I would only consider playing it if I had an auto-fire feature

Donkey Kong Plushie: WORST DONKEY KONG GAME EVER!!!!!!! D:
Did anyone actually own this game? I never played it and barely heard of it. And I played a lot of NES games.
wtf are this comments?!
I enjoy this game
I must be the only person who liked donkey kong 3.
Nope.
Nope.
Based on the comments, Derek is the only one that doesn't like it.
Not really I love this game as well 10/10
Yep
I don’t care for Derek. He tends to miss the point of some games completely.

1:29 you spent 15 dollars on the game, 20 dollars for the plushie. So you've spent 35 dollars to get that shot
Have to agree with this review, I just couldn't get into this game, ever. Not even when I was a kid.
