@Leo Kottke Howdy Mr. Kottke. Your biggest fan here! Just caught your show here in Albuquerque on 11/16/22. It was back in 1972 when I saw you the first time here. (50years) I hope that doesn't make you feel old.😄 Your music makes me feel young! Cheers!🎶🎸
What a great name, as well as a beautifully crafted song. I’m a bassist whose seen Leo every time (usually every year) for over 30 years and in a duo with the same finger style guitarists in the same vein as Hot Tuna and Leo with Phish bassist Mike Gordon. Great stuff and a great story! 🙏🏾
Leo's disposition while playing a challenging tune like Mona Ray is a sight to see....as he once said, "you have to be alert yet relaxed up there". What a master.
Dreamlike and mesmerizing. I like it even better than the original, which is the first Kottke I ever heard. Hanging out at a record store one night and Mona Ray started playing over the store sound system. I was instantly transfixed. Went straight to the counter and asked who it was. Walked out with Dreams and All That Stuff and it didn't leave my turntable for the next couple of months. I'm an avid guitarist but can honestly say I have an almost paralyzing inability to pull off any of Leo's material. To be able to play something close to this lovely, relaxed version of Mona Ray would allow me to die happy.
Leo Kottke and his Producer gave me a ticket to a show, on coming home from the military, in a sold out venue. It was one of the few things I looked forward to coming back from overseas. Love this guy, he is one of my heroes.
Leo Kottke has that ability to create beautiful music you can step right in and really start living inside - like living inside a room. One of my favourite "rooms" is an instrumental piece from one of his best albums : The tune "Orange Room" from his album "Burnt Lips" !
One of my favorites from Kottke from the excellent "Dreams and All That Stuff" album. Thank you to my older brother for bringing me to my first Leo Kottke concert around age 15-have been a fan ever since.
Watching him play my favorite song by him in such a setting and on such a guitar with such perfect amplification brings tears to my eyes, tears of joy and sadness...
Well, it is about 50 years since I discovered Leo! Here is a challenge for you, if you are a guitarist yourself, and think, "How could anyone possibly play like Leo?" First of all, realize that Leo himself was quite young when he achieved fame. Plus, I believe his first instrument was the trombone, NOT the guitar! Finally, look up the UWM (University of Wisconsin, Madison) Guitar program on UA-cam...and you will find a number of brilliant students who do great credit to Leo's style of playing. And...enjoy your musical journey!
Thank you Olen for taking the time to write such an informative and considered reply. I do play guitar myself, and I am a big fan of Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Davey Graham, and other Folk music geniuses.
One of our favorites. And I play it on either my 6 or 12 strings. I agree wholeheartedly with Stewart. You are lovely. And have Very Cool parents. Wish I were 40 yrs younger. Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now. God Bless.
Listen to "The Spanish Entomologist" off the Greenhouse album. There is also a video somewhere on YT (that I can't find at the moment) of him playing a small electric at a live street festival. It's a great one. :-)
I was named after this song and still find it so lovely.
❤️
Well that’s gorgeous.
Mona Rae is my most favouritest tune. Your parents must have adored it to name you so.
You're quite lovely too :) I've never heard this before and it's just beautiful.

Been a fan and student of Kottke since I first heard "Vaseline machine gun" in a record store. Love that armadillo album🤗👍👏
One of the best guitarists of all time. It always seems so effortless for him.
First came across him in '74. Blew me away. I almost gave up playing there and then. Genius.
Now for me, it was virtually the opposite - Leo's playing (and his associated colleagues) gave me the impetus to NOT give up!

welcome back
Thank you for your service, sir. Yes, Leo is quite a gentleman. I am sure the honor was his.
And you, sir, are one of ours!
brilliant composer, technician and a righteous and humble soul.

i just saw Leo in Santa Fe on Wednesday. He is such a stunning master of the acoustic guitar.

Only recently discovered Leo, and I absolutely love his music. I have a long path of discovery ahead....

I've been following Leo for 45 years and am still in the period of discovery!
One of the greatest live performances I have seen
wow. music is wonderful. fine guitar work, and writing. decades later and its still awesome.

I've seen Leo many times in concert. He is truly astonishing.
Wow. This is so effortless, and a joy to watch and listen to.
Beautiful song. One of Kottke's best, in my opinion.
The version in 12 string is better... Always imho...
Natale Rizzo have to disagree. The 6 string version is so much more pure and clean. The clang of a 12 string doesnt fit on this lovely tune
Tank you Sir ! Your 12-string music including your voice is phantastic, super super, super!
Beautiful tune...that's Kottke for ya!
Still my favorite by Leo Kottke
Leo's skill at composition on display here, along with those Kottke chops.
so beautiful and so rich with notes
I never get tired of listening to him.
Me neither, dreams and all that stuff , eh?
Love that melody.......true legend
He is the master!!
Life is beautiful.
A master - beautifully fluid. Always on my playlist!
Beautifull!
The kind of music you can just sink into + get lost!
Heart touching compose .....

Dude is amazing
Gorgeous... sublime!
Please tell me where there's more musical beauty per square inch.
this tune is his best!
So pretty!
So, who else cried...
Favourite Leo tune. 😊
This was from a recording at the Bottom Line in NYC in the 1990s. I think this post-Chrysalis Private Music period was one his high points
Thank you !
amazing
Love this tune ! #LeoKottke #monaray
Beeeautiful.
Beautiful.
Very unique style.
Guitar music doesn't get better than this.
My hero!
I think the only time in this man's life when he isn't holding a guitar is when he's asleep. It is literally an extension of his body.
Kottke always makes playing seem effortless. If only it was.
stewart conacher Sometimes when I hear Leo playing an close my eyes I have try real hard to convince myself there are not two guitars playing!
Brilliant.
なんでこんな綺麗な音が出せるんだろう

So lyrical...
I'd like to know if Leo ever plays the electric guitar.
Listen to "The Spanish Entomologist" off the Greenhouse album. There is also a video somewhere on YT (that I can't find at the moment) of him playing a small electric at a live street festival. It's a great one. :-)
Hey...finally found it. Think you'll get a kick out of this:

Thanks Joe ,that was great.
I think he also played the electric part on "Dan's Tune" from the Regards From Chuck Pink Album.
This probably owes something to JS Bach but I leave it to music scholars to tell me how I know.
Leo Kottke Music Americana

How to keep loads of folks raptured for three minutes, just by playing a guitar!
Ya know how you can just tell if someone's funny as hell by just looking at them?
he IS though Hahahaha
I can't play air guitar half as well as he plays the actual guitar
Leo is self taught.. says when he held the guitar at 8yrs he knew he could play it... go figure...
M
I imagine playing a six string for him is like an NFL starter throwing a 5 yard checkdown.
