Sitting here with a notebook nodding and taking notes like uhhuh, uhhuh, uhhuh. This is so helpful THANKS
Another great and informative video. Mia answered questions my local vendor could not answer…thank you again! 👍👍👌
Excellent overview. I’m new to pottery, and appreciate this information on what to look out for in clay arts.
I just wanna say thank you a lot. The tip, turn over before trim, save my life. 70% of my pieces cracks. Now none one cracks anymore. ❤️
Thank you! I get S cracks very often and didn't know you were supposed to flip the pots to dry!!
Made my first plate the other day, got a crack, made a really nice mug, handle got a couple cracks...😖. Sitting here sucking in this info, thank you for this video!!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience so generously!! 🥰
Happy to help!
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos! I have learned so much
Great tips. I am just starting out and learned a bunch! Thank you.
Really great video Mia! I'm enjoying many of your vids as I'm a new potter and am especially interested in hand-building. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, I really appreciate it. :)✨
You shared such great information!! Thank you so much!!
You are so welcome!
OMG never been told on the drying flip, ohhh I hope that is what will avoid the S cracks there 🤞
Thanks for this video, I make Bonsai pots and until now they were pretty small, as I am making larger pots I am getting more cracking.
Such great tips as always. Interesting compressing theory. I learned for a time in Thailand and my instructor put an emphasis on compressing the bottom. He was Thai and trained in Chiang Mai. So not sure if it's a Western thing but who knows, I know their medical schools often use Western books so maybe some got thrown into the pottery as well. Not that they wouldn't have had their own massive clay knowledge and history to call upon but interesting.
Thank you very much for all the information, they really helped! I am wondering if you could share some of your favourite pottery books for beginner or to anyone?
Thank you for sharing these tips. I am just wondering if glazing the none biscuit clay body can makes the cracks.
Thank you for this video❤
Love your videos. You explain everything sooo well. Thank you 🙏
💗💗💗thank you!!!
Very informative, thank you!
Really well explained, thank you.
Thank you a lot for your tips! I wish I had found this video sooner ❤
Wow what a great lesson!! You're great, Mia!! Thanks for sharing it
Glad you liked it!
Thanks so much for sharing all your experience. On the issue of flipping your pot for drying the base what can you do with a piece of sculpture that has a tapered top that cannot sit?
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! ❤🙏
Thanks for another great video! I was wondering if you have any tips on how to pick a project and how to plan a project or studio time? I have to bus to the studio and can only go a few hours at a time. Hope this makes sense thanks 😊
Maybe You have a tip how to fix crackle, and how it could be avoided? Thinner glaze coat? Cup and bowl that I made have crackled inside, but I want to use them for food:(
Thank you soooo much for sharing your experiences and knowledge
So if, for example, I only glaze the edges of my sculpture, would that potentially cause stress? Should I be glazing all of the sculpture in one way or another? Thanks
Hey☺️ Love your content! What if there are only small holes in the glaze and a pling sound?
Holes in the glazes are called pinholes (or maybe crawling?) that is a firing problem, not really a crack. Pinging usually comes from crazing.
This is fantastic, thank you very much!!! I so needed this information! :)
Happy to help!
Thank you
Very useful, thank you so much.
This is such an informative video!!! So appreciative :)
What about pinholes? Why do those happen and is the piece no longer food safe? Thank you!
Technically yes, but there are different thoughts on this among potters. If the clay is vitrified, I generally think they are ok. Pinholes can appear from a bunch of different problems. I will make a video about it!
@@PotterytothePeople Thank you so much! I have loved your videos -- they've taught me so much in the first year of pottery :) Sending love from California!
Your videos are so helpful! Thank you
I'm so glad!
I often a like 1 crack in my glaze usually at the base of a wall, just 1 lil 1-3” crack in the glaze, looks like it was pulling apart. a spoon rest had a piece of underglaze bubble up and chipped off a little rectangular chunk of glaze n the underglaze with it, but when I try to research it just shows crazing!.
I had a crack happen on the bottom of the wall and edge of the bottom. What could be causing this?
I have more cracks with the 3rd firing for gold. Any ideas why?
I do agree with you that compressing is not so important .The base needs to be clean, smooth and even like you say .I have never got cracks at the bottom.Maybe the s crack because I might have left some slip when I went for the closed form .
Yay, good to hear I'm not the only one who things compression is a big conspiracy, lol!
Compressing is fun, though! I like it because it gives me a moment to think about what to do next. ;D
Do you know a book in German similar to "The Potter's Dictionary of Materials and Techniques"? That would be so great! Thank you! :)
Very informative.
Hi Mia - I buy bisqueware and decorate with glaze and my vases keep cracking around the base evening if I leave the kiln and open at 50 degrees. Do you know of a solution with the glazing or kiln settings? Thank you!! Sasha
Thank you!!!! Need to flip my plates!
😮 I just heard you say never open your kiln before 100 Celsius? I think you meant 100 Fahrenheit. I don't ever open before it is within 20 F of ambient temperature. This seems like a good rule of thumb. But if you are opening at 100C and don't have any problems, then okay, I can not speak to that as I have never opened my kiln at that high temperature.
love your videos so much! i just subscribed!
Thanks so much for this informative video! I am a hand builder and make hollow forms with added bottoms. I am not able to turn my pieces over for even drying and this results in cracks some of the time. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Do you mean the piece is round at the top or something? You can make a sort of support with a bucket and a towel (or something else) and to rest them upside down if theyre round on the top. This is what I do because I really believe they need to be flipped, so I will do it however I can.
Thank you so much!!
I’ve never compressed the bottom and I’ve never had s cracks or any issues.
awesome video!!
Glad you liked it!!
A clothes dryer is a good tool for gently drying clay(provided you have laundry to do)!
I haven't made my first piece. I am afraids of cracks already.
What is engobe?
this video explains it: m.ua-cam.com/video/GnwbmjRSpYo/v-deo.html
