really was happy to come across this video as orangutan is one of my main white openings. not much instructional content on this severely underrated opening
The end of the video is hilarious, well done! I know that it was called oran outan because this opening walk like this ape, unbalanced and one move on the left and then one move on the right but actually it is quite powerful, just like an oran outan. I think I read that in the French version book of Tartakover, Breviary of Chess but not sure.
@@TheChessGiant this isn’t the true story; the story is that savielly tartakower was in the bronx zoo, and an orangutan pointed to the b4 square, hence why tartakower later used the move 1. b4 and got a draw. it also has other names, like the polish / sokolsky.
I got to 1800 lichess rapid playing Polish opening. And the highest rated player BeepBeepImAJeep reached in 2018 over 3000 lichess rating playing it also. So worth learning on every level.
That's great! Good job that's a solid rating right there - and wow I didn't know that either. Ya I couldn't agree more, very playable and deserves more credit.
NM. Solomon, great video and very informative and instructive; unfortunate in the chess club players are always preparing for you and that not chess, I prefer to take them out their prepare lines and make them play chess. I am a 1e4 player, but I always look for alternatives. I also like your 1.f4 Bird Opening, and you do an excellent job in covering that Opening .
This opening can be prepared even for slow chess. Several openings I play what has 60%+ win rate, but I rarely enjoy those positions. But I enjoyed this video a lot!
I'm pretty new to chess and tried this earlier today - just thinking "What's something I can do that's different/weird?". Now I'm trying to understand more of the theory behind it as an actual strategy. It's actually making me enjoy the game even more.☺
Very good coverage thank you. Interesting that you like d3 instead of d4 in many lines. I almost never play d3 because it feels too passive. Same for a3 vs b5, I basically only play a3 if black played c6 before. You don't have a rule of thumb when which is better do you? Again thanks for the overview of the Tartakower gambit as well as the not-so-explosive lines. Would love to see another vid about the outflank variation from black (c6 into a5), and German defense (d5 into Qd6).
Hey! First off, ya in an opening like this, so much of it simply comes down to what you prefer. It's not like the Sicilian Najdorf (as an example) in which there is only one good move, but an array of options that work based on your style of play. And thanks for those recommendations bro thank you. I look forward to releasing a German Defense video soon based on this comment. I hadn't heard of it before. Wishing you a great week brotha.
What many people that make chess videos forget is most people that watch chess videos are most likely rated 1500 or below and are looking for some new strategies.
What about the idea that a chess player was taking a break from a tournament in Poland and was observing an Orangutan behavior zoo and based the opening on how the Orangutan was moving around.
Very true! It's always a huge edge to be more familiar with positions than your opponents, while also know common mistakes the unprepared player can make and you can take advantage of it. It's one of those openings that is also hard to deal with because all normal looking chess/development/strategy goes right out the window.
@@claudiomaker2932id say surprise value is worth its weight in gold on every level. Almost no one plays 1B3, birds opening, 1B4 in my local club/tournaments. almost everyone E4 or D4 no surprise and i have my pet defence

I play this opening all the time now cause of this video. I even one time accidentally thought I was playing white and I just automatically pushed that pawn but instead of b4 it was g6 as black haha, somehow managed to win the game tho but now I was wondering if you could look into g6 for black (Borg Defense)!
I've done the same thing. But now I use it on the black side on purpose but use my b7 pawn so I'm staying on my Queen side. This seems to have some definite strengths on the black side of the board. I too would like to see Solomon Ruddell analyse this black side "opening" move.
Hey! Glad to hear you're playing the opening! It's fun to play something weird and then see a chess game disolve into complete madness. And thanks for putting the Borg Defense on my radar! Although the Borg Defense is g5 right?
Guess what i am taking to my next OTB match ;) This opening actually looks like my opponent will have to be very careful while i play simple moves. I like that mental imbalance a lot.
What's up Leon! Let me know how it goes! I think that this opening is a fun option because (like you said) we can just play normal, natural looking moves while our opponent is trying to figure out what is going on - making them second guess even move 1
@@TheChessGiant now 11 months later, I'm still a 1100 but switched to italian opening. After some time i found that there are better and easier plans in other openings.
Polish no doubt! The Grob weakens the positioning of your king - although it's still very playable. Idk if you've watched Coffee Chess but FM Mark the Duck is pulling that out all the time.

Agreed, the orangutan is so fun, and isn’t played, even after Magnus played it a bit
Orangutan opening🤝Grob opening. G4 and B4 are one of the most fun, exotic and rare openings there is. Playing them is always entertaining.
One of those openings that have a good chance of winning the bullet.

1.b4 is better than it's reputation. It has surprise value because many players will not have anything special prepared against it.
Surprise value is almost useless for club/tournament players, people will see what you play and will inevitably crack it
