  • Wild Horse Canyon, in central Utah, and just a bit north of Hanksville Utah, is part of the San Rafael Swell area and the formations seen in this video are quite similar to a video I posted a few months ago entitled "San Rafael Swell" which is located along I-70 just west of Green River Utah.

Like most of the rest of this trip in May 2017 the winds were pretty high in the 20-30mph range so that made for some difficulties getting close to things. Like my other video listed above the rock formations are of a slanted layered type that I believe is referred to as a 'anticline'.
In addition to the winds the sky was pretty overcast which tends to reduce color saturation but has the advantage of very even lighting -- almost like a very large softbox.
This area is very near the Goblin Valley State Park and is accessed from the same road you use to reach the Goblin Valley State Park. Not far from where this video was shot is a parking area where hikers park and then hike the ridge and canyons in the area -- there can be quite a few hikers on any given day.

Yet another very enjoyable flight, I would have liked to see a closer view of the rock pools, they looked quite deep from the air. Also the exposure and lighting looked very even on this video, what were your settings? So often the clouds get blown out in the sky, but this looked nice and uniform. Nice work Raptorman!

Edward Felton Thanks Edward, yeah I would have liked getting a little closer to some things, but with the high winds you have to stay a bit further back. As to settings ... D-Cinelike, H.265, f/5.6, ISO100, custom setting of -1/0/-1, WB=6000, and a shutter speed about 1/640. I did not use any ND filters.
