I fully endorse the statement made by former President of Pakistan, Mr. Arif Alvi, regarding the trial of all military personnel, especially Generals and/or the Chiefs of Army Staff (COAS), who have engaged in political activities or played political roles while serving in the Army. We should uphold the principle outlined by the founding father of Pakistan, Mr. Muhammad Ali Jinnah (Quaid-e-Azam). Reflecting on Pakistan-my beloved homeland-since its founding, I feel compelled to shout loud and clear: 1. The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) is a servant of the people of Pakistan, working through the Parliament. This title is earned through dedicated service to the nation, including sacrifices that win the love and respect of the people for defending the country’s borders and territories with their support and approval. 2. The army is an institution of the state, not its sovereign. 3. Sovereignty belongs to Allah (SWT), not to any mortal being. It is exercised by the people through their elected representatives. These representatives-our elected leaders-are accountable to the people, and they are not to be viewed as permanent, dynastic rulers. The power of these leaders is subject to change by the free will of the people they represent. 4. Military officers, as paid servants of the state, are not above the people of Pakistan. Their services are not a commodity to be sold to the highest bidder like mercenaries. They are employed to serve the nation, not to pursue personal or external interests. 5. Likewise, taking control of the nation’s finances or gathering financial resources from other states is not the mandate of the military or any other institution, even if sanctioned by Parliament. Parliament itself can only act in accordance with the will of the people and the written Constitution.
