      I seem to remember a tale of when tobacco was first introduced to these isles and of a man who had water thrown over him by someone who was under the mistaken impression that he was on fire. My thought upon hearing this was that if only this had happened every time someone had lit up, smoking tobacco would have been seem as a pastime that would receive a response of an automatic dousing with a bucket of water and the habit would never have taken off.
      This brings me to an incident that Mary Trump related of Donald being such a constant bully to his brother that, at the dinner table, Donald was crowned with a whole tureen of mashed potato by his father. Maybe if this had been a regular occurrence? . . .

      @ Causally incoherent. What has caused this is a fractious and concretized condemnation by religious and political adherents against the facts of natural human diversification as an evil and an unnatural. They just don't want to admit that nature doesn't make carbon copies of both themselves and their own ideations. The reason we are here and haven't gene stagnated is because of variations, both physically/neurologically and they have a fixed idea about 'wrong' and 'right' and 'black' and 'white' whilst nature has nothing of the sort.

    In my opinion, one of the saddest and overlooked consequences of the 48 years of Salazar's regime in Portugal, was "bufos" that translates roughly as snitches, canaries, taletellers, informants. Neighbours were encouraged to tell on each other, self police, creating animosity, distrust and destroying communities.
    For those with short memories and/or pining for "simpler times" here is a small sample of how complicated life actually was:
    It was against the law to criticise government, to criticise the overseas war, to assemble, to discuss ideas. Culture: books, press, theatre, films, tv, radio, all were heavily censored if not banned all together.
    During the Portuguese fascist regime called "New State" that ended in 1974, only women with high school degrees were allowed to vote, in a context of 1 in 3 women being completely illiterate much less having access to high school, high school was only for wealthy people, never mind university. Women were barred from becoming judges, diplomats, military or police. Women could be teachers but then only allowed to marry if given authorisation by the ministry of Education, similar laws for nurses, air hostesses, phone operators. Women working in commerce, opening a bank account, traveling abroad or taking contraception was also not allowed unless you had authorisation from your husband. Husbands had the right to open their wive's correspondence.
    Homosexuality "didn't exist" yet it was a crime and if denounced you would be beaten, humiliated, sectioned, sent to forced labour, sent to the colonies, this is you were poor of course, different rules for the rich and aristocracy.
    Being left handed was also no no too, my own mom failed primary school because her teacher tied her left hand to her back, but my mom was needed to work anyway, cause children had full time jobs and that was perfectly normal.
    My dad went to work for a grocery shop when he was 9, after being abused by the church, when he was 12 he moved to Porto in search of a better job, at 14 he moved to Lisbon in search of a better job, at 16 he joined the military to escape poverty and shortly after he was sent to fight in the colonial war.
    Myself and my sisters were raised by uneducated loving parents marred by trauma, as was my entire generation, and still they would utter statements like "it wasn't that bad" wtf? you didn't have shoes, or full length trousers, or a floor inside your house, even though everybody worked including the children, even though the state exploited and plundered vast overseas territories and peoples, you still had no shoes, no 60s, no friends, no nothing, just football, family, fado, fags and Fatima. But hey, kids could smoke and drink, so I guess you win some you lose some.
    48 years is a long time to brain-wash a population, to disempower them, to turn them against each other.
    Our dictator only gave up his power when he fell from a chair and and hit his thick head, inside, all of his ambition became a clogged mass that rendered him unable to make any more decisions, just like that. So long mortal, your small mindedness shall not be forgotten.

    I was born in Plymouth, UK, in 1940, I came to South Africa in 1944 and lived through the apartheid years, so I have been conscious of and affected by the evils of fascism since my birth. I am horrified by the current rise of fascism in the world, and have to wonder why it is that many people's memories are short and why is it that many people don't seem to think for themselves? Because capitalism does not work. You have to ask yourself who is funding education, who is in charge of setting curriculums. Tik Tok played a large role in Trumps 2024 election, and social media played a major role in him winning in 2016. These young kids didn’t really grow up with many WWII/second world war vets around. I was born in 1991 and thank God I was very well connected with my grandfather, a combat veteran. So time has passed, and social media now propagates false narratives, propaganda and “alternative histories”. A sad world. Soon, we are less than a decade away from shunning the internet all together because we wont be able to trust a thing we see on it.

With such a large proportion of the UK press now looking to kiss the ring, we need sincere analytical coverage of the rise of the far Right in Europe. TRiP is a precious resource in combatting non-British values of fairness and care for the individual, no matter where they are on the social ladder.

      “The word Fascism has now no meaning except in so far as it signifies ‘something not desirable’. The words democracy, socialism, freedom, patriotic, realistic, justice, have each of them several different meanings which cannot be reconciled with one another. In the case of a word like democracy, not only is there no agreed definition, but the attempt to make one is resisted from all sides. It is almost universally felt that when we call a country democratic we are praising it: consequently the defenders of every kind of régime claim that it is a democracy, and fear that they might have to stop using the word if it were tied down to any one meaning. Words of this kind are often used in a consciously dishonest way. That is, the person who uses them has his own private definition, but allows his hearer to think he means something quite different.” ~Orwell

If the people around him are constructing a fascist and/or Christian nationalist regime, he's happy to let them do so just as long as he's in charge and he can continue to bilk the system. I think Vance and the people behind him are simply waiting for their figurehead to drop dead in office (knowing that Trump's arteries are already clogged with Macdonalds finest dining) and then they'll use the sacred memory of the Great American Steersman in order to get the sofa-humper the next four years necessary to complete their undermining of democracy exactly as Putin did from 2000-2008.

It makes sense if Trump wants to emulate another populist from the 1930s. All Trump has to do is occupy Greenland and it’s off to appeasement races again.

Most young people I see in the USA are angry & motivated not radicalized by their current situation and many posters have mentioned a large number of them are taking that anger out against democracy.

To hear anyone from any minority background come out with what was essentially "they aren't coming for me" is simply mind-blowing. Yes, they aren't coming for you NOW, but you're next on the list. Look at LGBT. First, it attempted to divide and rule the LGBT community and set us against our siblings, but oh no, the gays are all right. @@EmmaLaBunn Wait, what? I have been "lucky", I suppose, in never seeing that. I worry about the road we (the West) seem determined to travel down right now.
      It's like the Fartage situation. Considering how even Leavers generally accept that Brexit was/is an absolute disaster. A disaster pushed on us by the interests of the 1% and Putin. You would think that if he dared show his face anywhere, the tobacco-stained booze-hound would be chased out, and yet... nope, business as usual, Heil King Farage, Long Live The King. Somehow, he gets to push the populist emergency button: "Oh well, if I was in charge, Brexit wouldn't be a disaster; it's the Tories failing to implement it properly" Yeah, because if they implemented it, how he wanted, the economy would have imploded, great for the disaster capitalists, not so great for the working class. Yet, like the turkeys to slaughter, millions of people (majority working class) voted for him. It's truly maddening. The same man who promised a pot of gold at the end of the Brexit rainbow, the same man who a few years ago was secretly recorded saying he wants an American insurance-based health system, the same man who just last week said he wants a French healthcare system (the same way he said, right up until the referendum he wanted a Swiss or Norwegian deal but as soon as the results came in he wanted a hard Brexit). The same man was paid hundreds of thousands of pounds to represent a gold bullion company (an honest man of the people).
      I understand that people dislike politics, think it's dirty and pointless, believe the State has left them out to dry (it did), and feel no one has the answers, so let's try something new (after the Conservatives spent the past 14 years asset-stripping the country). However, I cannot understand why anyone thinks he could possibly have the answer.
      All of this whilst the Left, here in the UK, does what it always does and refuses to be pragmatic and work in the best interests of everyone because Lib-dem supporters dislike/distrust Labour as do the Greens and vice versa. Until now, the Conservatives have benefited from the left vote being fragmented whilst they hold the right, which, under an FPTP system, guess who wins most of the time. Without PR, I do genuinely fear for this country because no matter what good Labour does, the Tories will be back and sell off everything they can and what they can't; they will ensure it falls apart to be sold off later.
      Say they hit their energy target and manage to "double onshore wind, triple solar power, and quadruple offshore wind to be at 95% low carbon energy by 2030" The Tories will work out a way to make it crumble like they did the NHS (in 2010 we had one of the best healthcare systems in the world and now look at it). Say Labour managed to get the waiting lists down and complete the job of starting to repair the NHS. We already know the Tories can destroy that, and they just did it in 14 years.
      Whilst I know things will improve here once Labour's actions start to kick in (the budget hasn't even come in to force yet) if they don't get better at comms, it won't matter because the press aren't going to help them. The following 5 years will be a bumpy ride; I hope we make it to the other side better off and on the road to recovery.

      The reason is fascists /nationalists/conservatives put up with liberalism, democracy, etc if the system is working for them ie they're prosperous, have jobs are warm etc....but if they dont benefit from those things they look for and can find scapegoats & policies to blame. Its been on the rise again ever since the Financial Crisis, Iraq War, Afgahnistan, Syria, Brexit, Pandemic, Energy Crisis, people can feel it in their pockets & they see rapid societal change, & have been encouraged to blame others, they dont realise that things can alot worse before they get better. Our leaders on the other side of the spectrum have failed to protect the Status Quo for slow incremental change.... Farage & Trump have weaponsied Immigration, etc to their own ends. Trump has lied, bluffed, bullied, intimidated his way to power & behaves like a feudal king. Its quite shocking to see this happen in America. But UK & EU leaders need to be careful & smart to deal with him.... otherwise he's going to take whole world down with him.

I deleted my Facebook account very soon after because I saw what Zuckerberg was and I can’t believe we’re still splitting hairs over whether Trump’s movement is fascist. This will continue until we have people saying “yes, but Trump is wearing his swastika slightly *lower* on his sleeve so he’s not a real Nazi”. All fourteen of the Lawrence Britt definitions are applicable, it’s a fascist movement by any reasonable definition and the American people are enthusiastically supporting it insofar as that divided nation can support anything. Also, 8 years after deleting Facebook I quit my job and moved to Portugal, almost exclusively because I wanted no part of this filth. The new State Department order pausing foreign aid does not apply to most Ukraine military provisions, which are administered by the Pentagon, not the State Department. To pause the vast majority of Ukraine war funding, a separate Pentagon order would be required
    The order DOES pause most non-military "aid" to Ukraine. But the majority of military aid, as of now, is unaffected. Military and non-military aid are statutorily and jurisdictionally delineated

    • @zuzanazuscinova5209
      @zuzanazuscinova5209 9 днів тому +1

      Exactly this. It's primarily the humanitarian aid that is stopped.

    • @evulclown
      @evulclown 9 днів тому +4

      Just to explain this further and give the correct perspective Humanitarian aid was indeed stopped, which means diverting funds in Ukraine to cover what that was paying for. Trump was keen to ensure that Israel was exempt, which shows cutting this aid for Ukraine was intentional. This is paused for a quarter of a year, when it will be "reviewed", even if accepted to continue could mean another 3 months before it arrives so a best case scenario of Trump putting a 6 month delay on that for no reason or removing it entirely.
      The military aid was signed by congress under Biden and Trump had no way to stop it, so yes that is still going through. Trump has not allocated any further military aid, which will take time to sign off, choose what it will be etc then get out... So again this is stopped forever, or even if started again would result in up to a half year gap.
      Trump has said that Putin should end the war or things will get worse. Talk, no actions, only talk. He has proposed that OPEC sell their oil at a loss to hurt Russia but no actual actions have occurred. He's supposed to be meeting Putin, no dates are set and both sides are saying neither has contacted each other leaving everyone involved in a deliberate state of limbo which is obviously going to effect other countries aid being sent.
      He's then threatened to invade a loyal allied nation who is in the EU and NATO to take their land and left this barrage of threats in limbo also, meaning NATO countries and EU countries have to divert energy and security to protect from a former ally.
      Not a single thing he has done has been to Ukraine's benefit, but rather has actually harmed it in every way that Trump has been able to do except for removing existing sanctions on Russia.

      The way I see it is that Trump is looking for the best transaction he can get - and given he has the biggest battalions he thinks he can get what he wants by threats - especially if the only cost is pissing off people he's not bothered about keeping onside like the EU and NATO.
      So he can bully Denmark to give him what he wants with little cost he's bothered about - unless the rest of the Free World stands up to him and makes the cost not worth the trouble. If he gets the Five Eyes calling him out, economic actions, huge losses in diplomatic influence etc, then maybe he thinks again.
