I like finding Groves inconsistencies! !!! . Perhaps I won't be coming back to them (unlike the totally superb Lazzari symphony) but I'm so glad I was able to hear them.

His orchestration certainly gets better with age !. In the first symphony he was quirky as oppose to original, but this has some rather nice and skilled touches. I look forward to number five. (Although his extreamly short entry in the 1956 Groves only lists four !).

+Phil Homes Not the only thing Grove got wrong; they're usually pretty reliable when it comes to the German and British sphere, but outside that there are some shocking inconsistencies. I can forgive them with regard to the European periphery, though - I don't think it was very easy to come up with information about someone like Marques in the 1950s. However, Grove's unreliability (and conciseness) with regards to French music is more difficult to explain.

+Phil Homes And yes, Marques gets better as he gets older, although I think this is the best of the lot (even if I have to confess I enjoy the third a tad more).

The first movement tempo doesn't seem to be quite right. There appears to be a slow introduction with a strong minor-key inflection before the Allegro con moto gets into full swing.

How is that "not right"? This is hardly the only work that is structured like that without marking it in the title (not sure how the score looks, though). All of Marques's symphonies start off like this. Only in the fifth does he indicate it in the movement title (Andante - Allegro assai, con brio). I think you need to distinguish between tempo markings and a tempo indication as a movement title (which can be more global) to characterize the movement as a whole for the public.

I'd really like to look at the score. Perhaps your source has access to it? Or is there an actual recording available now? I'm listening to the delightful 1st right now, and it pretty much starts out in tempo.

The first does, yes (although not entirely). But try the Third, for instance. No score available, I'm afraid. And erm... this IS an "actual recording" ;-).

I'll look for it. It just doesn't SOUND like an "in tempo" introduction. It took some prying, but I was able to get the complete movement information for Jadassohn's 4th Symphony, for example.
