I Skied The World's Biggest Ski Area

  • Back in March I skied Les 3 Vallées, the biggest ski area in the world. But is bigger better? Find out in my high end documentary from the trip!
We stayed in Les Menuires, but the three valleys area includes Méribel, Val Thorens and Courchevel, along with other smaller resorts.
    Les 3 Vallées website: www.les3vallee...
We travelled with Crystal Ski and stayed at Le Chalet du Mont Vallon (which was very nice). Crystal Ski were great when the French strikes delayed us so I'd definitely use them again: www.crystalski...

Skied Val Thorens in the late 70’s I was 17, snowed continuously for 2.5 days over 6 feet o snow, had my first deep powder lesson there, was used to hard pack, eastern United States skiing. Skiing since age 7, then in mid 80’s until 10 years ago, mostly skied Utah and Colorado with my wife and children, really learned how to ski deep powder and steep verticals, mostly off trail and ungrounded. Then when my son turned 18 we stayed in Maribel because there is tree skiing for white out days, also took our snowboards. We went off piste in Courcheval with the boards, didn’t realize that it was out of bounds. Went through a cloud, I made it down fine, but my son lost me and ended up on a 100 foot cliff and had to be extracted by rope by 3 ski patrol members. Learned a valuable lesson. We skied every resort, 85,000 vertical feet in one week

    Very nice video!
I love the 3 Vallées, especially Val Thorens, which is my preferred village and valley in the 3V.
Their cable lift systems are out of this world, with great speed and capacity. They have a solid collection of pretty unique lifts that are mesmerizing to watch operating. Like several double boarding chairlifts, a handful of funitels...
There's usually low wait times and short journeys to the top of huge pistes at a very high altitude.
Though, Val Thorens can be too high for some that need a day or two to get accustomed to the altitude.
The 3V are in the Tarentaise Valley, also known as the Olympic Valley, which is more like a small region around a huge valley from where connect other contributory valleys.
The Tarentaise is to skiing what Orlando is to theme parks and entertainment, with 3 Vallées being like Walt Disney World, Paradiski (La Plagne & Les Arcs) or Tignes & Val d'Isère being like Universal or Sea World resorts.
The Tarentaise has several of the largest, best, and most developed ski areas and resorts on Earth.
The little nugget on the cake is that when you have a week ski pass in one of the mega resorts, you have a free day in each of the other ones that's included.
So, with a bit of organization, you can experience all the resorts and ski areas in a week, never sliding down the same piste twice.
One of my favorite is Tignes Val Claret, which is one of the villages of Tignes - Val d'Isère (Espace Killy).
It's the highest village on the Tignes side, and there's an underground funicular train that brings you almost to the top of the Grande Motte mount.
It's like taking the subway and exiting at dizziing heights under a blinding light.
Les Arcs - La Plagne (Paradiski) is great too, both main ski areas are linked by a gigantic double track, double-deckerr cable-car systems crossing a valley. You can ski 70 kilometers out and back without running the same piste twice.
Les Arcs is the easiest to access as it is linked by a funicular to Bourg-Saint-Maurice station that is served by high-speed trains.
All these Tarentaise Valley mega ski areas and resorts are accessible by public transportation, so you don't need taxis, or a car.
TGV's from Paris or Lyon stop at various stations along the Tarentaise Valley to serve these resorts before ending in Bourg-Saint-Maurice.
From these stations there are busses to access the resorts' villages, and as mentioned, a funicular for Les Arcs.
For many years, there were even Eurostar services from London. I'm not sure if they're still running or not, but I think they've stopped with some rumors they'll may resume.
This really made me want to go back skiing there...
    Greetings from Paris!

I really want to go back. I think I’ll try and get a trip there this winter!

Great Video Robbie! Looking for a camera to use when skiing myself. Which camera did you use for the video?

What camera or setup do you use that allows you to have such crisp filming while skiing? Both in the selfie and forward shots?

    • @RobbieKnox
      @RobbieKnox  Рік тому

It’s just a GoPro Hero10. It’s great in good weather, just struggles in low light a bit.

How do you rate Les Menuires for improving beginners, as after this coming season I'll be looking to go somewhere to start my 2025 season?

Imo ski resort reviews are incomplete without showcasing what majorly sets a mountain apart from the others (besides snow quality and views): expert terrain and terrain park features. Green runs are the same on every mountain, I would even go as far as saying the same for most blacks (or reds). But for the ski bums, they are wondering where the powder, cliffs, chutes, steeps, jumps and rails, etc... are. Though, the mountain is for everyone, and as much as I personally think the attractions at the base shouldn't be included in a review of how the mountain skis, its cool to see their importance to different people, especially those that don't want to ski. When you have kids that is especially important, but we don't have to worry about that here. Thanks for showing the mountain though, definitely want to check it out now at some point.

I’m just on holiday with friends, some of whom were beginners and thought it might be helpful for people to see a bit of the mountain. Definitely not the video for chutes and cliffs though!
I don’t agree that all green runs, etc are the same though. I lived in Whistler for a year and the greens there are generally narrow cat tracks snaking across Blackcomb, whereas some resorts have lovely wide greens for people to practice their turns on.
Whilst I do enjoy (relative) steep bits and off-piste, I think the vast majority of people who go skiing are interested in the whole experience - slopes, but also bars, restaurants, etc. That’s the good thing about UA-cam though, different videos suit different groups.

Thermometers in french ski resorts are always wrong. The boxes they are in get heated up by the sun and they read way higher, so its very unlikely that it was 18°C on thay day you were there!
