  • Dialogue between Gary Weber and Rich Doyle on the approaches, and processes of letting go into the deep bliss of stillness. Byron Katie's "The Work" and the Sedona Method are explained as well as Ramana Maharshi's "unchanging vs changing" approach to accessing the "peace that passeth understanding". Ralph Waldo Emerson, Michele Foucault, Robert Adams and Miles Davis also make appearances.

@@GaryWeber Yes, thanks. I have already read your book Happiness Beyond Thought and it was extremely helpful in deconstructing the "I". However, I'm still having thoughts all the time about how to reach enlightenment or a 'state of no thought'. They go like this, "How can I have no thoughts?" "How can I stop this thought?" "Why am I still having thoughts?" etc. Even though I'm no longer thinking much about the past and future, or me and others. Can you recommend a way to stop this or some further reading perhaps? Many thanks in advance :)

Hi @@1990calum . Yes, the blogpost "What is the 'Direct Path' to nondual awakening? What is self-inquiry?" @ happinessbeyondthought.blogspot.com/2012/08/what-is-direct-path-to-nondual.html
, you'll get some directions on exactly how to do self-inquiry most effectively.
It is critical to practice at least 35 minutes a day on one of the inquiry questions, like "Where am I?", "Who hears?, What is this?", etc. If you do, you should see some improvement in a month. Totally eliminating them takes much longer, but it is doable with perseverance.
It is also necessary to couple this with "letting go" practices, to deal with traumas, fears, stories, etc. which arise from the self-inquiry. The blogpost "Letting go of your attachments to awaken...why/how/when" @ happinessbeyondthought.blogspot.com/2014/06/letting-go-of-your-attachments-to.html
you'll see two very effective, cognitive-therapy-based, DIY approaches to deal with them.
If you Google "Byron Katie" or "Sedona Method", you'll see mountains of information, but some of it is misleading as the simple DIY ones in the blogposts, which were the original ones, were so powerful that there was no work for the psychologists. Consequently to get more work for the psychologists versions were created that basically guarantee you will never be "cured"...this was confirmed by a leading psychologist in a workshop i was giving.
This blogpost also gives information on how to use Nirvana Shatakam as a "check list" for this work. Nirvana Shatakam is in "Happiness Beyond Thought" in some detail.
On "thoughts" in general, the video "What 'no thoughts' means...3 different kinds of thoughts" is an excellent resource. It is also useful to remember Ramana Maharshi's guidance on "no thoughts":
"If one wants to abide in the thought-free state, a struggle is inevitable. One must fight one's way through before regaining one's original primal state. If one succeeds in the fight and reaches the goal, the enemy, namely the thoughts, will all subside in the Self and disappear entirely."
      Trust this is useful.

Tks for comment, Maxim. The mic setup in that studio wasn't the best for this video. we've been working on it. Others have commented as well. my voice is generally soft. Individual mics might help, but we're trying to keep it "informal" and "impromptu" as none of it is rehearsed. Tks for interest. Any other comments, lemme know.

    Hi Joel,
Ramana Maharshi said to one questioner that the only choice was whether to disidentify w/this body; in the "Einstein and Ramana Maharshi on Free Will" video, you will see that he said to another questioner that everything is predetermined. his guidance depended on the questioner's maturity.
IME, all choice is an illusion. when the "I" goes away, there is no one to have a "choice"; it has no meaning. If you fully dis-identify w/the body-mind, the "I" falls away, surprisingly.

Hi Steve. Don't understand what your comment "Being is groundless" means. Are you referring to "ground of being"? That is a common way to discuss different "states". Best, of course, is to say nothing at all, and is closer to the truth than anything that could be said by anyone. The Miles Davis quote was about his music, not his life. Folk, esp artists, can reach a transcendent state in one area and have their life manifest some other way. That doesn't invalidate their art. stillness.

Hi noarelax. Tks for the feedback. we are using a single mic about 4 ft away, to retain "spontaneity" and that happens. we do keep adjusting it, but it has been a "work in progress". stillness

    Dear Dr. Weber,
I have an idle curiosity. Do you believe that we actually have the CHOICE to dis-identify with this body? Or is even that choice another illusion?

My apologies. ´´Being is groundless`` means in `` original nature`` there is absolutely nothing to hang your hat on and it is not dependent on anything. It is not a state. It is simply what is.

Hey Garry love all your videos as always. However Robert Adams mentioned here by Rich was found to be a scam artist and they even found sadly he had never visited Ramana Ashram. I felt the need to say this so one doesn't discard your videos because Robert was a scammer. Love your stuff :)

Hi there. Could you please provide a source for these claims?

  • @Steve-cn3nj
    @Steve-cn3nj 11 років тому

Being is groundless. That is as simple as it can be.
Miles Davis may have played a certain way at a certain period in his career most noteably from the mid fifties thru the mid sixties using sparse bluesy accented style but his life was far from being still, often quite turbulent and self-destructive.
Way to much conceptualizing and talking about ``states`` of mind especially from Rich who is not as clear as ``he`` might THINK he is, of course he may make no such claims.
