in the cut after they admit it, adam actually had to leave set for about a minute, because he felt so angry and betrayed. luckily he instantly realised that it was the producer that pressed them to do it.
I love being in Jamie's position when shit like this happens. Put your hands in your pocket, whistle, and feel good knowing that not only did you not get shocked - but you also had nothing to do with the pranking. Man he really dodged that bullet.
Rutger de Haan They came nowhere near killing him with it. The fact that it has 10k volts doesn't matter because it discharges a low current (amperes). Sure, it hurts like hell, but unless you have something like a heart condition or a pacemaker, it's not gonna kill you. Though i wouldn't recommend putting the electrodes on someones neck or the base of their skull. THAT might kill them.
Here's what Adam wrote in a reddit AMA answering the question whether Tory still feels bad about this: "Yes he does. Seriously. Tory is the nicest guy in the world (seriously) and feels terrible to this day. Wasn't his call. He and the team were forced into it by someone no longer associated with the show."
+United States of Embarrassment Tory's response to the incident is everything but surprising, he really doesn't look that comfortable with the idea, you can tell by his face expression and response when Adam raise the question. I really feel sorry for him.
+MazzazzK The overall responsibility lies on the producer, neither Tory nor his companions had nothing to put against his insidious plane. And we all know how the rest goes.
+Dick Fageroni I don't know about that, I mean the producer literally got fired over this. And I don't think that *Kari would really want to actually hurt Adam, she is just better at acting then Tory.
+MySubstitutedReality I am the producer and i can tell you know that I did not get fired over this. Any implication that I did is defamatory. I didn't leave the show for almost two years after this happened.
I think this was filmed during the time that it was big in certain TV shows to have team members cussing and shouting at one another. After the shouting match is over, they follow the people that got into the little spat and interview them for added drama. Considering that the Mythbusters don't do that even on their worst days, I'm thinking that's what the producer was trying for and got rightfully sacked for.
Oh my god, just look at Tory's face at 2:53 through 3:07, and then after Adam touched the idols. He totally wasn't comfortable with this, he even said "We can't do that to Adam!" and "There is NO way we are doing this to Adam" before it all played out, I wouldn't have been able to look Adam in the eyes afterwards if I had to go through with this
it looks to me like they'd done it behind his back because he laughs, looks off camera, his eyes widen in shock, then he looks straight over at Kari with concern on his face before looking back at Adam. I feel so bad for all of them.
I think it's very telling of Adam's character that he decided to leave and was quite chipper in saying so "just leave me alone". Clearly the guy wanted to go ape shit but he wasn't gonna lash out at anyone in person, just needed to get the rage out on his own. I believe part of that is because he had a genuine friendship with those guys and knew almost instantly that were it up to them they wouldn't have pulled that stunt. As many in the comments have said it was a producer that forced them down that route in the first place
Adam in a later episode like years later in tazer episode he talks about how he has a heart condition so was unwilling to get tazered so this makes you really see why he was pissed.
Knowing it was the producer's call makes the first segment so much different. Tori's immediately like "we can't do this" because he knows it'd be a shitty thing to do. I'm sure there was a heated discussion with the producer in between takes.
Yeah, I respect that; it‘s more difficult than people think. In this situation I would have gone absolutely thermonuclear. The rage just builds up uncontrollably. Going away is absolutely the right decision; there’s nothing productive coming out of so much emotion, ever!
It was actually the producer who set the prank up. The young team didn't want to participate in it. Watch the interview with Adam where he talks about it.
+Beth “Miss Marshmallow” Rose Scottie left for matters unrelated, personal matters to do with the show's schedule being too unorganised. Scottie, Kari and Tory got let off when Adam found out it was the producer's idea, and he forgave them. Also I don't blame Kari for what she said, it was inappropriate, sure, but what else could she say given that *a* they just pulled a cruel prank that was out of their hands to call off on their friend and one of the main two hosts of the show and *b* apparently Kari's line was also scripted as part of the joke. There was a lot of tension in the moment and while not thinking she broke that tension.
+Beth “Miss Marshmallow” Rose Don't care that this is 8 months old; that's not even a little bit true. She left for personal reasons completely unrelated to this episode.
@@sockmon1 She was the only one who chickened out and didn't want to test it herself. Yet she was the only one on the crew for leaving the cattle prod connected to let Adam have it. She's a psycho alright.
@@GAIS414 I couldn’t stand her. She dressed like someone who had an employee discount at Hot Topic and smiled like an idiot whenever she was on camera. If she had to do anything that required actual effort or made her feel the slightest bit uncomfortable, she whined and cried like a spoiled baby. Case in point: Chinese Water Torture It didn’t surprise me at all that she was okay with the electrocution prank. Her job was to be every nerd’s fantasy while the guys did all the work and took all the damage.
The fact they survived this hiccup is a testament to the depth of their friendship and working relationship. I love this show....some real smart people doing fun stuff we all wish we could do.
@@unscripted483 You're right. I watched the clip a couple times and right after Tori got zapped he said no they couldn't do that it to Adam. You could also see the look on his face before Adam touched the ark.
Stuff like this, no matter how safe it is to actually do, really had no place on Mythbusters. They worked with a lot of dangerous items, they needed absolute trust in each other that these items would work as intentioned and outlined, barring any technical failures within it.
Adam also has a heart condition and has explicitly refused to be tased or anything in episodes because of that. I really hope the producer didn't know about that because it was borderline criminal if he did
Honestly it’s not even that safe, touching by only one extremity like in the case of a cattle fence is not that dangerous but shorting the stuff with both hands create a real risk of cardiac shock
I love how they tried not to show it, but you can tell the emotion everyone is feeling after watching Adam getting shocked was shit spewing fear. They knew they had gone too far.
@@sploofmcsterra4786 Yeah, like, we already saw, in an early clip, both Scotty and Tori getting shocked by it, and Tori even said that they couldn’t do that to Adam. And then a producer made them do it.
I heard that the prank was actually one of the producers idea's and that the whole crew was basically against it including tori and grant. Pranking is fine, especially when done safely and in good fun, but in a situation where things could go bad it's kind of a betrayal of trust.
Joesolo13 That's because Kari didn't feel the shock. For all the people who think it's okay to cause other people pain for the sake of a prank, they should try the prank on themselves so they can know what the other person may be feeling. Then they should think twice about what they are going to do to someone.
Normally I'd probably make fun of Adam for being a wuss, but I grew up on a farm, and we used the brand of fencer they used on this episode, and the very thought of coming in contact with it was enough to shy me away from it. The one time I did accidentally come in contact with it, it literally knocked me on my ass, and was not funny at all (my brother, who normally looks upon any sort of pain on my part as a chance to mess with me, was stone-cold silent after this particular incident). Adam was entirely justified in being a little pissed about this, and I think everyone involved was lucky the cameras were rolling, as I think it tempered Adam's rage. All things considered, he's actually a much better sport about it than I think most other people would be.
Exactly - right on! People don't realize that an electric fence and a 'cattle prod' or stun gun, or whatever are totally different things. A cattle prod delivers a sharp pain locally. The electric fence is a HUGE current, with higher amperage, designed to deter animals - not people. The feeling is totally different, like being shocked by a shoddy electrical socket. You do feel it, and it's a horrible experience. Especially since we all know that any current like that can kill, given enough time, and we've all been taught to stay away from electricity. So it's hard to take a hit like that a just blow it off. Congrats to Adam for taking it so well. I have so much respect for him from this.
Don't know how our electric fence charger compares to the one in the video, but while getting shocked by ours is far from pleasant it does not merit that level of response.
daniel cason Have you tested it while being properly grounded? i.e. touching ground with bare skin and not being inuslated by your shoes? It is completly different experience, trust me.
@@NetAndyCz I wanted to bypass a when I was a teen in a rural area and tested it with my hands first. Wasn't bad at all so I started crawling under it and got the real zap.
Maybe it's because of the length of fense attached to the wire or the fact that the electric fence set up we has when I was a kid was ment for horses, but I can say for a fact that I never was shocked that badly by an electric fence. I fact as a kid I used show off to my friends by walking up and holding on to the electric for 30 seconds or more. While it gave me a bit of a jolt it really wasn't that bad. But I can't say what the cattle brand is like sense I've never experienced one.
3:39 on was obviously recorded after the fact, the camera crew was like "Yeah, we're not that suicidal. Screw you Rees, we're not recording his reaction right now." Adam even said that no one would follow him because of how mad he was. Not to mention that Rees was fired like right after that was recorded/aired.
Fun fact, Tory and one of the cameramen if I remember, used to tazze themselves FOR FUN when they were board on set. So when he says an electrical shock is THAT painful, He's not being a baby about it.
I can´t blame him for behaving the way he did. Shock like that hurts like hell AND he did ask if they had hooked up the electric fence. He trusted his friends and coworkers and got a massive shock. Pain like that might have been tolerable if he had been prepared to it but he wasn't because he trusted their word. I think he was actually quite considerate. He was hurt and upset and needed a moment to calm down - so he said he´d be back in few minutes. Everybody felt bad but after all they made up :)
I like how Jamie is surprised when Adam asks the team to confirm that they hooked up the cattle prod machine and when they say yes he looks at them with wide eyes.
When current passes from one arm to the other it goes directly through the heart. The "punch in the chest" feeling is the heart muscles clamping down and the heart momentarily stopping.
For everyone that is comparing stun guns to electric fences: a stun gun delivers a claimed voltage of 50,000 to 100,000 volts at 0.003 amps. That stings in the spot where it touches, and makes you not want to touch it again. Unless someone dares you to do it for 10 bucks. Then you touch it again and get 10 bucks. Not that bad. An electric fence is 10,000 volts at 0.150 amps (50 times more amperage, 5 times less voltage), which doesn't sting. It feels like you're going to die. Have someone hit you in the chest with a freaking bat, and you're getting close to the sensation. So for everyone saying that Adam is a wuss, try it out, then offer your opinion. I bet you'll change your mind.
Thanks for explaining this. It was actually his reaction in this scene that stayed buried in my subconscious when I first saw it so that whenever I saw him on TV or youtube I immediately felt a strong dislike for him, like he was a know-it-all egotistical asshole whose nasty arrogant attitude caused me to not appreciate his knowledge, good advice and skills. My first thought was the same as others, that his ego was bruised by being pranked by the supporting cast when only he should be the one pranking and humiliating them. I saw him as the type of guy who makes fun of others and expects them to take it with a sheepish smile and embarrassed chuckle but when he gets a taste of his own medicine he becomes passive aggressive and tries to make you feel like you are the worst person for committing such disgraceful acts thereby turning the tables to make you look like the asshole who should feel really bad. I guess it was just so out of character for him since he’s the jokester of the show. But from your explanation I now understand that the prank was analogous to someone smacking you in the back of the head with a nail-covered 2x4 and expecting you to laugh while you pick the pieces of brain oozing out of your skull. So I get it now and I actually want to get back to watching Mythbusters.
I was around ten,and my dog was with me. I had been curious (and I have greatly regretted this decision ever since, but I was a kid) I had pushed my dog into a cattle fence and my dog had run away yelping for 30 seconds. When I did it, the shock had gone through my dogs hair and into me, and it hurt. My dog took most of it too. I still regret it,but that thing must have been powerful (pun intended)
This is literally the only unfunny moment on mytbusters. It was even called out beforehand. Not edited properly. If this was the first show, I'd quit watching.
@NW3D no man this shit was fucked up, its not cool to do that to someone, this isn't one of those fake sticks of gum that jolts your fingers, an electrric fence supply accross the chest can kill and just in general is really fucking painful, not to mention how messed up it is to do this to a friend. And that was kinda the point of Mythbusters, just friends being friends.
Man, this is rough. You can tell nobody but the guy behind the camera wanted this, their smiles and reactions is simply good acting, the tones of their voices as he asked them about the fence before he was shocked _and_ their tones of voice after he was shocked. The cut at 3:38 obviously hid the part where he reacted strongly, which makes for bad TV as it should. At 3:35 you see a camera move into frame, poorly produced and cringe worthy. Kudos to the on screen talent for dealing taking it in stride but also showing that it was no joke.
I've been shocked by an electric fence before and can confirm it is quite painful. They should have made that producer touch the thing just so they understood what they were putting Adam through.
I got shocked by a cattle product as a kid, in a store. Thing was supposed to be locked up, but I picked it up, not even knowing what it was. Nowadays would've been lawsuit city
I agree. Tbh, I'd even take it one farther: I'd tell the producer that even if he tried it and thinks it's OK for him to get shocked, it doesn't mean he gets to make the decision whether it's OK for Adam to get schocked. What if Adam has a heart condition or something? Jeez. So many pranks are really cruel.
Grant Imahara RIP. I have just heard the sad new of Grant's death, my throught's are with his family and friends, such a big part of the Mythbusters Team. He will be sadly missed.
If you've ever been shocked by high voltage, then you KNOW why Adam was as pissed as he was. Electric shocks hurt really really really bad. I don't doubt Tory for a minute when he said it was a "211 out of 10". I got shocked by an ungrounded power outlet once, and that's only 200 volts, and it was easily one of the top 10 most painful things I've ever felt, up there with a dislocated jaw, broken teeth, chemical burns, and having one of my toes mutilated in a lawnmower.
@@samlicata4650 I'm a vegetarian so don't take this as me supporting anything to do with keeping cows, but they have much thicker skin and electric fences don't affect them like they do us. Just look at leather gloves. Also usually this stuff is touched by sweaty hands and sweat is a fantastic conductor, cows only sweat maybe 10% what a human does.
See, THAT would have been how a tough person would have responded. Jamie, Tori, even Scotti, for example. Don't get mad, get even. Little pain's no big deal, ha ha, laugh it off and move on. Adam didn't even get mad; he got officious. As in "The talent is outraged! Call my agent, call my production company, I demand a latte and somebody's job." Which is totally different and extremely likely to be his basic personality, unfortunately.
Gj23jk2 Its not funny though, the fact it had a huge effect on the cast who expected that shock it must felt like he died for a moment with the fence. Adam did something I couldn't have done in that situation which was back off and cool his head before coming back.
TempusKing Horse-shit. He knew instantly what they'd done to him. He was butthurt and mad, not scared. You have a gross overestimation of what touching a fence feels like. I have done it unintentionally dozens of times, including with both hands. And while it hurts badly, I'm smart enough to know that it's not lethal, and could never be lethal. The current isn't enough. What is this shit with "feeling like he died"? No, he felt like he got hit with a big electric shock because his employees pranked him.
Gj23jk2 Something completely untrustworthy, completely unprofesssional, completely out of limits of their partnership. There is no pranking about it. For all the level of safety they try to reach, it was broken for a laugh and it wasn't funny. Its not that it could've killed him, its not that he came off unharmed. Its that they broke his trust and caused him immense pain. Let me tell you not everyone is used to being shocked by a eletrice fence, and only an idiot would accept working in a place that your fellow employees could accidentally take things out of hand. And lets not even begin that non-lethal can easily turn lethal. People die from pepper spray because allergic reactions. People can die from a taser shock. Its just circumstances and the condition of the person being shocked. Especially going with a device not to be used on people, its just idiotic and shameful. In the end there no reason to do the prank. And a lot of damn good reasons to be upset to the point of suing or getting someone fired. You can even see it in the video and the pranksters reaction. The ones who shocked themselves knew its a bad idea. Only Karie was smiling the one who didn't shock herself, the other two eyes were darting side to side and the smile was uneasy. They even lose it later when adam explains how plausible it is, the only one laughing again is Karie.
Having worked with people from different cultural backgrounds I can tell you that tolerance for pranks is VERY regional. In some places this type of thing is a good enough reason to "take someone behind a shed and beat the crap out of them" (an actual quote from a ex-coworker of mine), in others its an "oh get over it" attitude. For some regions even joking with them verbally is enough to make them quite angry with you, its a lot to do with the norms for where you are from. This is worth keeping in mind in life as you deal with other people. It's best to have a good idea how someone will react before pulling a prank, particularly one involving pain. Where I am from this is more of an "oh get over it" type of prank, but I know others would get legitimately very mad and other people will just jump on the outrage bandwagon for the fun of piling on. Just so we are clear though, there was no serious health risk here, the problem with the prank is truly more about short term physical pain and the trust factor and Adam specifically asking about the electric fence device and them lying about it right before he touches it. For some people that is unforgivable on its own, while for others trust is about the big things (e.g. don't steal, be reliability for critical situations, etc..) and it is OK to playfully mislead for short term pranks, jokes, etc.. Something to consider for those who "don't get" how other people are reacting.
I gotta agree there. Once somebody asks you outright, the joke is busted... you just gotta own up and admit defeat, especially if it's potentially dangerous. Besides, the look on Adam's face isn't one of being frustrated he was fooled, it's one of shock (no pun intended) and betrayal that "his people" would do that. Not cool.
The amount of respect I have for Adam and his calm collected approach to handling such a betrail. That man is no less than a saint. so sorry he had to endure that.
I'm very happy they kicked the producer who supported this, and gave Adam a heartfelt apology. That said, if they had done this to Jaimie he'd have strangled them them all with his mustache.
I remember seeing this when it aired. It’s one of the most difficult things I’ve ever watched. The betrayal of trust hurt more than the shock. This should never have happened, and I wish it didn’t.
Beth Rose What evidence do you have that Scottie was fired over this? It was the producer's idea, she doesn't even talk in the clip and looked just as uncomfortable as Tori, and has publicly stated she left the show because the filming schedule got so hectic that it was too much stress and she just didn't want to deal with it anymore.
Beth Rose I did, I found nothing besides speculation from drama-obsessed people on forums. All official sources including Scottie herself state that the trick was the fault of the producer, the team went along with it because they had to, and Scottie chose to leave, and she chose to leave for personal reasons that had nothing to do with this. You're the one making the claim, it's your burden of proof. Despite that I tried looking it up anyway and found nothing. So provide your source or retract your statement.
There's another clip of Adam talking about this incident where he says a producer who is no longer with the show talked the build team into doing it, over their own objections, objections clearly stated by them in this clip before subjecting Adam to it. He (Adam) refers to it as a low point in the show's history and rightly so.
Yikes, I remember this. Adam was absolutely right to be angry. Not only does it hurt when you intentionally touch it and expect it, but the shock when you're not expecting is much worse. They work in an environment that has the potential to be very dangerous, and you need to trust each other. If you don't have that trust ... That and ... his arms make the circuit, so where does that current go? That current passes through one hand, up the arm, through the chest, and down the other arm. As Adam says, it passes through the heart. Electric shocks going through your heart carry a chance of causing arrhythmia, which needs medical attention. If you happen to have an existing condition that you're not aware of, then that medical attention might become considerably more urgent, like "CPR and call a damn ambulance" urgent. They absolutely should have known better.
Poor Tory looks seriously guilty. You can tell they didn't think about the ramifications - when Adam says 'that was 10,000 volts right through my heart' it's almost like he's talking to young kids who've done something that could have hurt their little brother.
Watching Adam talk about this and the amount of pain and anger he felt after doing this really makes you think about how big of a scumbag the producer that made them do this. Even when Jamie does it you can sense the regret in his voice for agreeing to do it to him.
He understands very well that it ISN’T dangerous. It’s high voltage, yes, but low amps so it can’t actually kill you. You need both high voltage and high amperage for a fatal shock. Also let’s keep in mind that he was in the company of competent scientists who actually understand electricity. He had no reason to believe any of this was dangerous. He was upset because it hurt.
@@tristanssimpson1324 A classmate of mine lost his father when he was electrocuted changing a car battery. Less that a single amp, aggravated a heart problem he didn't know he had, and he died in front of his son.
@@Octopugilist A 12 volt car battery with less than a single amp? That’s very implausible. Sudden cardiac death due to an abnormality of the heart is most often triggered by physical exertion. It’s likely the act of working on his car is what caused it, and that he was changing the battery is only a coincidence.
@@tristanssimpson1324 I don't know what you think is a lethal amperage, but you can die from a single amp shock if you have a heart condition. OSHA guidelines state that 50 milliamps is enough to stop someone's heart in a drastic situation. Anything above 1 amp is a serious risk of heart failure. You do not need both high amperage and high voltage for it to become fatal. The average 12-volt battery contains 48 ampere-hours, or 48 hours of continuous 1-amp output. That's 1 amp on the CONSERVATIVE side, assuming that the battery is drawing the bare minimum power output, which is likely not the case most of the time. And that's enough to kill you. The most dangerous part about an electric shock is that you have a good to fair chance of losing control of your muscles and curling your hands/fingers inwards when you get a continuous zap, causing you to be unable to let go of what's shocking you. I've heard tens of horror stories of electricians working alone being in that exact situation and it's terrifying. Someone is underestimating electricity and has no idea what they're talking about. Don't fuck around with electricity, guys. Sources: www.osha.gov/sites/default/files/2019-04/Basic_Electricity_Materials.pdf www.jdpower.com/cars/shopping-guides/how-many-amps-is-a-car-battery
According to Adam, this wasn't their idea, it was the idea of one of the producer's - who's no longer with the show. He also said the rest of the cast and crew was really angry with the producer afterward. His description of the shock was "it was like being hit in the chest with a 2x4."
We've all seen Tori get hurt like a goober a thousand times, but that look on his face at 3:31 is a look of actual pain. It reminds me of the look on Johnny Knoxvilles face during Steve-O's intervention. From stupid comedic pain, to being actually genuinely hurt.
i guess bc otherwise theyd have electrocuted adam and not even gotten footage out of it. idk which one is worse, hurting the guy 4 views or doing it 4 no reason at all
The dirtiest trick on MythBusters was when Carrie and Grant told Tori that he was jumping high enough on the bicycle to clear the wagon when he was nowhere close. So then when he did attempt it the bike caught and he face planted into the concrete.
This is one of those pranks that quickly stops being funny after the fact and everyone is uncomfortable. But the show tried to edit it like it was funny that it happed. Good thing this didnt hurt any friendships
Even recently Adam said in a Tested video that he still fears electricity and won´t mess with it. He was refering to the episode where they tested tasers.
Ppl do not understand the danger of shocking someone like this- it could easily stop someone's heart or damage their central nervous system or cause a seizure which could in turn do damage. Plus, it just hurts- and Adam had already let them know he didn't consider the device a toy or the idea of shocking someone funny, he took it very seriously when Jamie threatened to shock him. I don't blame him- ppl are really stupid when it comes to stuff like this- why they think it's funny to see someone shocked and in pain I don't know.
I bet all 3 of them sincerely regret doing it and learnt from it. I don't hold anything against them since it seems like a one off and I heard they were told to do it by the producer. The path of electricity can easily cross the heart when going from hand to hand.
Later, Adam explained that it was one of the producers that convinced the team to pull this stunt and deceive him. But of course the footage has to be edited to make it look like Kari had the final say. I don't think I could have gone through with something like this, fun is fun but screwing around with electricity is pretty dangerous.
3:28 The way Tori looked down and away. I love the fact that there was some fairness to it since Tori himself had tested it out, but it's only half fair since Kari didn't. If I was Adam, I would have made her test it out herself so I could truly forgive her. And man, she just laughs to herself afterwards, including the woman beside her.
+THEFIREBIRD1000 wrong See my posts elsewhere in this stream 90% of what Adam is telling you in his story is BS and most of you fell for it. I Eat the show more than two years after this story was filmed. Hardly the cause and effect that Adam claims.
+OriginalMythBuster hahaha even if you are indeed the producer, i guess it's your responsibilities for the result of shows, deal with it, viewers has tendency to judge by their own feeling and opinion. If they think you are bad, then you will be bad. General opinion matter most and you just out of luck because , no mater how much you reply people will think the other way around
@@OriginalMythBuster again I will state that you are in fact not the producer and it took me all of 3 minutes maybe to be able to say this without a shadow of a doubt. I don't know what your vendetta is against Adam but for a producer that has reportedly filed a defamation suit, the results are not public record which means the case never happened. Any court proceedings are to be made available to the public by law unless it happens in military court or involves confidential government information which a TV producer does not have access to. Thus, your entire story is bullshit built on a foundation of lies and identity theft is a felony offense with substantial time attached to that. Whatever beef you have with Adam, is it worth possibly going to jail pretending to be someone else? @@WhydTheyChangeOurNames For what it's worth. He is actually the former producer mentioned here, of that there is no doubt. That's what makes it really, really sad. What a pitiful person. He would have been less sad if he was in fact a troll... but alas.
Honestly, if it had been a light shock it probably would've been okay, something along the lines of those prank ballpoint pens that shock you when you click them. But a fence charger? The producer should've known better.
I don't mind a prank among friends, but this was SO awful in so many ways. Adam sourced it way before anyway, meaning they had to LIE about it. Which already makes it unfunny to me. Adam is clearly 'hurt' and visually appears to feel betrayed. Who we all know as a good guy and a great sport. If HE can't laugh about it, he's really miffed. Kari's awkward remark right after his reaction seals the coffin. It's so obviously forced and completely unfunny. If someone really did set this up and got fired for it, it was well deserved. Partly for it being a douchey move, but mostly for it making the show look cheap, awful and staged.
can confirm that fence thing got me while taking my horse out the yard and it's been 2 months my shoulder still hurts like hell if you touch it slightly firmly and it made me shakey for a solid hour
What an absolute clown of a producer that demanded this. Its unfortunate the B team didn't realise at the time the way to prevent this would've been directly calling Discoverys legal department because there is no way they would've allowed this, insurance must have murdered them for it its a ridiculous stunt.
They probably had similar thoughts in hindsight, but it can be hard in the moment to think things through and resist if your boss is telling you to do something inappropriate, illegal, unethical, dangerous or any combination of the above.
Oh man, with the knowledge that a producer made them do this, you can really feel they don't want to do it. When he asks if they hooked up the electric fence, it's so uncomfortable
I have a cousin, maybe, that I still dont talk to due to similar prank over 25 years ago. I remember seeing this on the air and thinking, whos getting fired today?
jo l I don't think so. You may not like your job, but most people wouldn't go so far as physically injuring their boss just out of spite, or as a joke.
jo l Death is a pretty lasting effect... And 10,000 volts across your chest can definitely cause death. Adam was VERY lucky that there was no serious lasting damage.
Nothing\ V=Ir As the voltage increases, so does the amperage. The voltage used in that cattle prod can easily kill people if it goes across their hearts, like it did to Adam.
Actually, he said it was 100,000 volts in another vid, and described it as feeling like you were dying after being hit in the chest by a 2x4. The crew refused to follow him afterwards and gave him a moment to gather himself off camera.
Adam himself said in a public speaking event that Tory, Grant, Kari had nothing to do with this. A lot of fans have blamed them, but he said that an ex-producer decided to hook up a 100,000 volt cattle prod to the wings knowing that he was going to touch it. He said the rest of the crew was angry on his behalf. No one knew the producer was going to do it. Since we saw on the show that the other built it, people assume they left it turned on to shock him.
@@ryantogo8359 They didn't know that the producer disconnected the original lower volts. The producer secretly hooked it up with a high voltage cattle prod. So while they all knew that it was hooked up, no one but the producer knew that volts were higher and more painful. As I said, Adam himself said this in a live event.
That look on his face... a mix between shock, pain, anger and disappointment. I think nobody was happy with the situation and the fact that they tried to keep the joke going shows how unprofessional the show was at times. Getting a dumb laugh was more important than the science behind it. They tricked him into touching a Van de Graaff generator, but that had a fraction of the voltage and that's a bit more than the shock you get when you charge yourself in a car or on a carpet.
+Corristo89 They were forced to do it by the producer at the time. They felt bad but have to keep the show going. For someone so interested in science, you don't seem to do a lot of research.
+SuperSlashDance and you don't do you research either. I am the producer and I left the show more than two years after these events took place. Adam is lying. He doesn't want to admit that someone else created him. See my other posts.
"its high voltage but low amps so it wont kill you but it hurts"... Sometimes I'm amazed at the things that are said on a show about building and physics. Its the amps that hurt and since it does hurt to touch that thing there is enough amps that this was a dangerous thing to do.
I touched one of these once too, it really really hurts like hell but what hurts most is the shock of it happening to you less than the actual shock itself, it hurts less when you are in fact prepared for it. If you are expecting the shock it doesn't hurt as much but it still does.
So glad you got this right. Pop culture teaches that you use a defibrillator on a stopped heart, which is totally wrong. A stopped heart cannot be helped by electrical stimulation. CPR is used for a stopped heart. Only the cardiac arrest rhythms ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia are normally defibrillated.
Nope, not potentially lethal. Frankly, if the batteries had been capable of giving a good sized shock, that would have been potentially lethal since there would not be any amperage limiter one the shock delivered from the batteries. But since they were too weak to give a good shock, the fence charger was used instead. Still a very cruel "joke" and at the very least Adam could have been physically injured from simply tripping or falling down after jumping back from such an unexpected and painful surprise.
@@johncochran8497 I've touched an electric fence that was rated for this before. Trust me, it's not an easy sensation. Imagine a cavity opening up inside your chest. That's what it feels like, a cavity of harsh, throbbing pain.
@@lordkrythic6246 Sorry, I'm not impressed too much by electric fences. Once as a child I was climbing on a corn crib that was next to a field with an electric fence. I slipped, and my foot got wedged between the crib and the fence wire. Got zapped by the damn thing a half dozen times before I got my foot out. I definitely know they're painful, but they're not that impressive.
It seemed like Adam over reacted. I remember as a kid (~8-9 y/o), my cousins and I would dare each other to touch my uncle's electric fence on his farm...the key was to not touch with the palm of your hand as your hand would close on to the wire.
Adam later said that he was pissed off not at the Junior team but at the producer who set them up to it.

luckily he instantly realised that it was the producer that pressed them to do it.
I mean there's literally footage of at least Tori and Scottie saying its a BAAAAD idea within the clips.
I love being in Jamie's position when shit like this happens. Put your hands in your pocket, whistle, and feel good knowing that not only did you not get shocked - but you also had nothing to do with the pranking. Man he really dodged that bullet.
Especially considering Adam was almost at the point to kill Kari, Tory, Grant, and Peter Rees. Considering they almost killed him with that thing.

Here's what Adam wrote in a reddit AMA answering the question whether Tory still feels bad about this:
"Yes he does.
+Crow He also says that they can't do that to Adam a bunch of times.
Considering that the Mythbusters don't do that even on their worst days, I'm thinking that's what the producer was trying for and got rightfully sacked for.
ah the pawn stars approach i remember.
I think that’s a very good point and I’d bet money you’re spot on
Orange county choppers.
I think that's why the killer quicksand episode was more volatile than usual. The producers wanted to try that added drama craze.
It was a big thing in the US but in the UK standards for what was abd wasn't OK on TV were really strict.
I remember this old episode. Man, did Adam look *pissed.*
KastaRules Rightly so, I'd imagine. If that were me, I'd bugger off for the day.

That is the face of outraged shock when he gets zapped.
Oh my god, just look at Tory's face at 2:53 through 3:07, and then after Adam touched the idols.
He totally wasn't comfortable with this, he even said "We can't do that to Adam!" and "There is NO way we are doing this to Adam" before it all played out, I wouldn't have been able to look Adam in the eyes afterwards if I had to go through with this
asdf
you can TELL he was not having fun with that. he visibly felt bad.
it looks to me like they'd done it behind his back because he laughs, looks off camera, his eyes widen in shock, then he looks straight over at Kari with concern on his face before looking back at Adam. I feel so bad for all of them.
Tori was even trying to hint at it when Adam directly asks them if it's wired up
I think it's very telling of Adam's character that he decided to leave and was quite chipper in saying so "just leave me alone".
3:32 Tory looks at someone off camera. You know he’s looking at the producer like, “I fucking told you not to do this...”
It was actually the producer who set the prank up. The young team didn't want to participate in it. Watch the interview with Adam where he talks about it.
Yeah sure you are xD
+cherrrybomb1 I think Kari pretty much was complicit with it, but Adam didn't want to throw her under the bus.

That's what you get for causing harm to your crew.

Joesolo13 That's because Kari didn't feel the shock. dude I have tazed my friends with a million volt tazer. I have tazed myself with a 50k volt tazer, Adams a pussy

It was a producer who did it, and luckily Adam was good enough to blame the producer rather than anyone else.

The cut at 3:38 obviously hid the part where he reacted strongly, which makes for bad TV as it should. At 3:35 you see a camera move into frame, poorly produced and cringe worthy. Kudos to the on screen talent for dealing taking it in stride but also showing that it was no joke.

But totally fine to use against cows.
@samlicata4650 dude what are you on about? This comment is 13 years old. And electric fences aren't meant to be touched that's the point
@@samlicata4650 I'm a vegetarian so don't take this as me supporting anything to do with keeping cows, but they have much thicker skin and electric fences don't affect them like they do us. You need to be more careful bud. Are you still alive even?
Adam should have feigned a heart attack, instantly flipping the joke on them. They'd have shat themselves.
Gj23jk2
Its not funny though, the fact it had a huge effect on the cast who expected that shock it must felt like he died for a moment with the fence. Adam did something I couldn't have done in that situation which was back off and cool his head before coming back.
TempusKing
Horse-shit.
Gj23jk2
Something completely untrustworthy, completely unprofesssional, completely out of limits of their partnership.
Not cool.
It's rare you find someone's resignation letter in a form of a video... Nice job Mr. Producer.
"This decision is entirely in Carie's hands" what the only one who didnt actually feel it?
His face went from happy and joking around to serious real quick, like you could feel the tension
Just a fact someone did lose their job over this
Two people did. Producer and Scottie.
Beth Rose What evidence do you have that Scottie was fired over this? It was the producer's idea, she doesn't even talk in the clip and looked just as uncomfortable as Tori, and has publicly stated she left the show because the filming schedule got so hectic that it was too much stress and she just didn't want to deal with it anymore.
do a google search dude.
+Beth “Miss Marshmallow” Rose Did you do a google search? Source please.
Adam DID have a heart condition and has refused to be tased, which a producer would know about, so that makes this prank 100 times more fucked up
Poor Tory looks seriously guilty. You can tell they didn't think about the ramifications - when Adam says 'that was 10,000 volts right through my heart' it's almost like he's talking to young kids who've done something that could have hurt their little brother.
The look on Adam's face after he had been shocked is really sad.
Watching Adam talk about this and the amount of pain and anger he felt after doing this really makes you think about how big of a scumbag the producer that made them do this. Even when Jamie does it you can sense the regret in his voice for agreeing to do it to him.
Adam is an engineer and robiticist. He understands VERY well how dangerous this "prank" could have been
He understands very well that it ISN’T dangerous.
@@tristanssimpson1324 Clearly you're an expert

According to Adam, this wasn't their idea, it was the idea of one of the producer's - who's no longer with the show. He also said the rest of the cast and crew was really angry with the producer afterward.
His description of the shock was "it was like being hit in the chest with a 2x4."
Adams loving nature shows so well. He was absolutely livid after the shock but still forgave them.
I think he was well aware that they hadn't wanted to do this to him, had been pressured by the producers (who were rightfully fired).
We've all seen Tori get hurt like a goober a thousand times, but that look on his face at 3:31 is a look of actual pain.
It reminds me of the look on Johnny Knoxvilles face during Steve-O's intervention. From stupid comedic pain, to being actually genuinely hurt.
I felt the feeling of betrayal in Adam's voice. Glad the producer got the axe.
Man if I had a nickel for every pixel in this video... I’d have a nickel!
Not even one. Or maybe a single nickel after another 50 years of inflation. 😅
Why did they even air this? It's so painful to watch
Yes. They sure did.
Shock value
It even cuts away after they repeatedly say they cant do that to Adam. It's so blatantly obvious that they were pressured into it.
i guess bc otherwise theyd have electrocuted adam and not even gotten footage out of it. idk which one is worse, hurting the guy 4 views or doing it 4 no reason at all
@@MNGN101is that a pun
The dirtiest trick on MythBusters was when Carrie and Grant told Tori that he was jumping high enough on the bicycle to clear the wagon when he was nowhere close. So then when he did attempt it the bike caught and he face planted into the concrete.
I don’t think Grant was there
@@excusemebrah141 you are right. I think it was Kari and Scottie
I love how the first thing Tory said after he got electrocuted was "We can't do that to Adam."
That's why the producer got fired. Notice that he's laughing when they're all hugging and no one else laughs. Douche move.
Adam: you hooked up the real thing, didnt you! 😠😠😠😠😠
Jamie: !!!! O-o

It's a whole different ball game touching that thing when you KNOW you're going to get shocked vs when you're not expecting it.
I forgot about this happening, poor Adam
3:28 The way Tori looked down and away. I love the fact that there was some fairness to it since Tori himself had tested it out, but it's only half fair since Kari didn't. If I was Adam, I would have made her test it out herself so I could truly forgive her.
And man, she just laughs to herself afterwards, including the woman beside her.
He was looking at the people behind the scenes, I would bet. It wasn't their idea in the first place, it was that of the producer.
+THEFIREBIRD1000 wrong See my posts elsewhere in this stream 90% of what Adam is telling you in his story is BS and most of you fell for it. I
Eat the show more than two years after this story was filmed.
Also for someone that keeps preaching defamation, what you're doing to Adam is defamatory which is another criminal offense. I'm a lawyer by the way so please do respond I would love to shake every lie out of you :)
"LOL let's 'prank' the star of our show with a painful 10 kV electrocution. What could possibly go wrong?"
Electrocution is a contraction of electrolic-execution. Since Adam lived, there was obviously no execution. Adam merely received an electric-shock.

that fence thing got me while taking my horse out the yard and it's been 2 months
my shoulder still hurts like hell if you touch it slightly firmly and it made me shakey for a solid hour
It's funny how Jamie didn't even react, when Adam got shocked :D The Ultimate Poker-Face!
He's just happy that when Adam got hurt he had nothing to do with it!
“That day he was pretty upset about it.”
And rightfully so!
Lol, I love how Jamie is watching Adam and as soon as Adam jumps back he's like a hawk looking at the guilty party.
Just look at Toris face when adam asks if they've hooked it up... You can see in his eyes that he really think they should stop this "experiment".
Wow, that's a pretty shitty thing to do.
jo l
I don't think so.
You may not like your job, but most people wouldn't go so far as physically injuring their boss just out of spite, or as a joke.
Malovon You can thank the producer at the time for coming up with this idea.
jo l Death is a pretty lasting effect... And 10,000 volts across your chest can definitely cause death. Adam was VERY lucky that there was no serious lasting damage.
Gellis12
Voltage has nothing to do with how fatal an electric shock is. It's the amerage that kills you.
Nothing\ V=Ir
As the voltage increases, so does the amperage.
I respect Tory for stating he wouldn’t do it to Adam so clearly someone else set this up.
Man, you can see Tory was really uncomfortable with this idea. His response to Adam asking where he should put his hands was "I don't know"
Did that hurt?
Yar, that was 10,000 volts right through my heart.
OOOOHW Feel bad!!
What the hell are you talking about? They obviously knew that it was hooked up, smooth brain
His lawyer stopped those conversations happening when we were still working together. That is the main reason i ended up leaving the show.
@@OriginalMythBuster no, your case never happened. Your lies will consume you "Peter"
The Producer rightfully got fired for this, Jamie is the only one allowed to hurt Adam.
The look on tori's face when he hugs Adam at the end, you can see how genuinely shitty he feels about the producer making him do it.
"its high voltage but low amps so it wont kill you but it hurts"... Sometimes I'm amazed at the things that are said on a show about building and physics. Its the amps that hurt and since it does hurt to touch that thing there is enough amps that this was a dangerous thing to do.
Adam has got to be one of the nicest guys ever.
"Do you feel God?" Kari~ you're lucky you kept your job! Lmao! Girl- you got balls!
She defused the situation with that line. The producer who actually made this happen was fired.
The worst part about this is it was potentially lethal, and it was excruciating to feel.
+SlayerOfTears volts are not lethal amps are
Nope, not potentially lethal.

I've touched an electric fence that was rated for this before.
