    Good to hear some numbers that demonstrate real world numbers. Hopefully it'll inform those anti EV viewers to either modify their views and move onto something else to froth at the mouth about.

    I do get a little confused about the people who insist on talking about cost/mile, there is no rule that states that saving the planet has to be cheaper. Ethical goods / fair trade / slave labour / Organic / Local produce / Non single use / Fixable and not disposable, these are all good things for the planet and its people and consumers expect to pay more for them.

    You are quite right Jonathan about the mpg for diesel cars. My Golf 1.6 does approx 65mpg in summer but 55mpg in winter.
    Thanks very much for your series of videos - it really proves that modern electric cars are very practical for long journeys.

    • @gibroon4418

      I've been trying to get this point across to people that say the range decreases for EVs during winter. It's exactly the same for ICE cars. I don't travel too far to work, mostly 30-40 mph zones, in summer I get 40-50 mpg, while in winter I get 30-40 mpg. This is approximately 20% loss of efficiency, similar to EVs.

    • @PJWey
      @PJWey 9 місяців тому

      @@gibroon4418yes science at work, air is thicker, roads are wetter and energy is transferred less efficiently. Of course turning your ICE cars heater off doesn’t get you a better mpg. Or rather your diesel might not give heat for a while after starting as it’s more efficient. All vehicles are a compromise but it’s a personal question of what you personally choose to compromise on.

    The usual comments came in from the EV Trolls I see. Apparently they drive 1200 miles and think diverting 2/3 of a mile will ruin your travel plans in an EV. The usual level of proud idiocy. I wonder if Geoff Buys Cars fans are getting revenge for Jonathan calling him out. The ICE-heads are a bunch of sensitive souls aren't they? Poor diddums! But as the ever wise Jonathan says, they're just boosting his status by adding comments and views. It's very good for the algorithms. 👍👍

      I know of someone whose distaste for EVs comes from (a) they cost more, (b) take too long to charge cf. filling at a diesel pump and (c) they don't have the range for him to drive from the Home Counties to Scotland and back - seemingly in a day! - to photograph steam trains. And the less said about GBC the better.

    Thanks Jonathan a great series. We have just made a round trip to York in our MG Trophy EV. Rapid charger costs came in at £47. However we topped up to 100% using the Octopus Go tarrif before we left. York is 175 miles from home. The same journey in our previous car, a Ford Focus eco diesel would usually cost us around the £70 mark. However its not all about the cost, there are lots of other benefits. its a cleaner, slicker, smoother, quieter and generally more relaxing way to travel. I am now seriously looking at replacing my 13 year old Nissan Leaf with a Renault Zoe.

    Great set of videos, thank you (from a petrol car driver!). I’m still not convinced about the time spent charging when doing longer distances, but seriously considering something for the majority of miles I do locally (and I’d be able to charge at home). The auction videos have opened my eyes to a possible future purchase to avoid that new car ‘hit’.

    great video's and the milage you did would be a little cheaper than my skoda superb 2l diesel estate ( 5 year average 62mpg) so as long as the zero tax and insurance stays low it makes sense .The only thing against it is the time and cost for you to get home ,but has changed my mind a little ,but a journey like that would have used a tank and quarter and be doable in just over a day, but for me , to commute , a slightly larger EV would make sense

    Best ICE car I had for mileage only still gave me 45mpg and it was a diesel. I like getting up to speed and driving as the condition allow, but my EV does this and worst case seems to be 210 miles in the winter and 270 in the summer months (Double digit temperatures!)
    Bearing in mind that over the past two and a half years my Kia E Niro has driven 23870 miles at a cost of £788.37, so about 3.3 pence per mile. Majority of charges were at home and it includes an 870 mile trip to Disneyland Paris and used 240 kWh.
    Prices of rapid chargers are therefore part of the ownership. It is like finding you needed fuel and there was one remote filling station charging 50% extra then normal. People would still fill up if the needed to.
    Hopefully electricity costs will drop soon as Tesla show it can be done, being about half the cost.

    If the zoe or your charger works with Octopus you should move to intelligent tariff, its 7.5p kw 11.30pm to 5.30am. In the 3 months we have had it it sets off 'intelligently' charging as soon as you plug in, it doesn't wait until over night. Which is handy if you have the cooker/washer etc on. It even starts 'intelligently' charging when octopus are paying others not to use power because it a dark wind-less day. I'm sure they'll sort their software out eventually....

For diesel prices to be 50% of current prices you would have to go back to 2003. If you look at diesel prices and ignore the dip in price due to Covid and the spike due Ukraine the average diesel price should be about £1.30 to £1.40 a litre.

    You can take off the £218.25 food/hotel/ferry if you did the same journey in an ICE. Everyone knows 853 miles is easily done in a "oner" without a wimp out overnight stop, your average ICE driver never eats or drinks; and ICE vehicles are so light, due to not having a huge battery, that they're able to drive across water. ;-)

    Those who are anti EV will not change their minds until they own one and, it appears, some get more spiteful as each rational and legitimate point is put to them.. But by the time they use/buy/lease an EV, the tax incentives with have dissipated and they will have even more to complain about because they haven't had the financial benefits that early and current adopters are enjoying. But forget about them and their 600 mile polluting diesels, their bathtub bladders, their dwindling accounts and their blinkered views - they get what they want and what they deserve. Keep up the good work, help to convince those that are open to new ideas, new ways to save, new ways to clean up the environment (especially locally) and, to be honest, enjoy a much better drive. As I say, good work.

    Like you I am an evangelist, but for the ICE and I'm not bothered about the cost of fuel, plus I wouldn't need to arrange my trips around which hotels to stop in, and if my battery was to go flat I would just plug in my booster pack, I'm not sure how that works for EVs, so there's never going be an EV or even a Hybrid for me, just my little rant.

  • @DaleSteel

    That's okay charging at a hotel IF you don't need to get home. Plus in that case you should add the room cost to your fuel bill.

      Only 3% of cars sold this year were powered by diesel, once the current diesel cars wear out the diesel engine will be gone. Vans will need to switch to alternative fuels as there will be no Diesel available at forecourts within 10-15 years worst case.

    EV's are maybe the way of the future in Europe, but for Africa where the infrastructure for electricity is sorely lacking ICE vehicles make more sense. The cost of EV's here is prohibitive and way out of most people's reach, even if you could buy one. Interesting as this is, it does not pertain to places with little or no infrastructure or where distances that need to be travelled make a mockery of lack of EV range. It will be years before ICE vehicles can be replaced here though and then it might be with donkeys.

    As with all these videos pro or against EV's it depends on what happens on that day but interesting to see the costs. I think the costs are a bit out, you got a full charge from the garage and your mums so that's in essence free millage that your using to claim is equal to 65mpg for the price you paid. If you added in the cheapest rate for public charging it doesn't seem to work out better than a mildly good diesel. I'm sure this comment will get some hate but just my viewpoint.

    As much as the price of rapid chargers is high, I do feel that these businesses that have put in all these chargers, should be allowed to make some of their money back quickly. Without those extra pennies, some of these companies may go bust due to high interest rates. This would be far more of a problem than having to pay a bit extra. Hopefully, once this rotten government has been kicked out, we can see some proper government incentives and strategy to the EV adoption that is going to be needed before 2035.

      it's not has if this govt with cash grants, zero VED, zero 'luxury' car tax,5%VAT on domestic electric (vs upto 70%+ on petrol/diesel), near zero BiK tax, salary sacrifice schemes, companies offsetting EVs against tax, £0 ULEZ and CAZ etc haven't been incentivising EV adaption for the last 10 years. The cost must be pushing £10sBILLIONS by now

    BP and the other oil companies should be capping their charging fees at 25p / kWh. Payback for all the environmental damage they've done, and all the tax breaks they have been given over the years.

    What was time spent on all the charging including at Shoreham Auctions, Hotels, Parents etc. A decent Hybrid would do around 70 to 80 miles per gallon. When taxi drivers have to use EV’s for their livelihood and mostly have to charge on public chargers they have no choice. They are not happy paying extortionate rates for charging as this directly affects their incomes Also the time spent on charging is money lost. As if your wheels are not turning your not earning. Also if 80,000 PCO drivers in London went to EV I really don’t think the infrastructure is ready.

    Don’t know if I’d even trust a modern diesel to go much over 100k miles, with all the pollution cheat devices fitted to them, that coke up the engine and dilute the oil.

    • @trevorberridge6079
      @trevorberridge6079 10 місяців тому

      Trolls also forget to mention that in modern diesels you have to buy that AdBlue stuff to make it more economical and clean. Mind you knowing the history of false reporting of diesel emissions and economy I wouldn't trust that it does what it says half as well as it claims. In any case it's an extra cost above the cost of the diesel itself and it's not optional. If you don't have it in your diesel vehicle it will shut down until you get some. No additives in an EV.

    • @bordersw1239
      @bordersw1239 9 місяців тому

      I don’t think you can call it a cheat device if it actually works which adblue certainly does. Cost for me would be about £20 per 10k miles. Or in EV terms one charge of 25 kWh at a gridserve charger at 3.6 miles per kw - about 90 miles of range. I’m not anti EV, would love one as our second car. But comments such as yours are just as inaccurate and misleading as the idiots on some of the anti EV channels

    Nice rant! Keep flogging the 'How long does it take ton charge?' = 5 seconds to plug in when I'm shopping/peeing/eating/sleeping answer, and asking fossil drivers why they can't fill up at home for free/3p a mile? Just so anti-EV it's not rational. If James and Matt can run 50k miles a year commercial servicing vehicles, anyone can do it with ease. What matters is the average cost of the fuel/electric over the longterm/life, EVs look like they will win over the long term

    • @williamarmstrong7199
      @williamarmstrong7199 9 місяців тому

      They do quite quickly become free vehicles. My MG5 SR is now on 123750 odd miles. It cost on average 3p a mile to run which is about the cost of main dealer servicing for something like a Ford Focus (which cost exactly the same as buying the MG) so I am saving very nearly the whole fuel cost. My last diesel did 40mpg as a taxi in town. At an average of £1.40 per liter so 123750 miles at 40 mpg = 3093 gallons x 4.55 liters x £1.40 = £19707 saving. At the current cost locally of diesel (£1.53) £21000+ been as the vehicle cost me only £26400.
      So still assuming a £1.40 per liter average cost of fuel by 165000 miles I will have saved the entire cost of the vehicle. Repairs and replacements are a fraction of a normal fossil car also. The Ford Focus equivelent cost vehicle would by now have had to had its entire engine replaced (wet cambelt engines have an expected life of only 100,000 miles before requiring complete replacement. At an all in cost of around £5000 to £7500. If a new clutch and flywheel was fitted at the same time. I would have had to replace the front disks three time and pads 5 times the rear disks once and pads 3 times. I am not even 50% worn through my 1st set of pads in the MG.
