With regard to this situation 'head down' in horse language / horse psychology means: 'submission of free will'. Those who moan about the mare's head position care too much about dressage drilling tradition and too little about natural horse behavior.

Beautiful to watch, thank you ❤️❤️❤️
I was trained a bit in academic riding (for people who don't know: is the concept of horse training that benefit the Horse, coming from understanding the horses anatomy, the same training used with Royal Lippizan horses in Vienna) back when I had horses, I learned the horses head/neck should go relaxed down, as step 1 during training (not curved) , in order for the horse to first get relaxed and give/lift its back to the rider. From there, you could work on step 2, which is the horse lifting the head a slight bit more / rounding the neck to a degree but still naturally (not forced through reins! ) this only should happen through the activation and build up of the right muscles, from the stomach and back part.
I believe people are used to see horses being forced curved by the reins, or high neck/head style, and think this is natural and how it should be, because it looks good to the eye. This happens especially in English riding style, that they pull in the Horse and control the horse through the reins. But it is so wrong. It does not benefit the horse in any way, yet nobody complaines about it, because wrong doing by horses have become so normal. Which is very sad ! Even the riders of the queens stables in England, I have seen does this 😕
But on the other hand I have noticed that many western riders allow their horses neck to be low and relaxed, which is lovely to see!
    🙏

No, before you comment "the head is to low" , save your energy.
The horse is calm and relaxed, obviously, he trusts his rider.
The horse is free to move their head whenever as they do not have reigns pulling their head up.
If you still think im wrong, then explain to me how he is keeping the horses head down the entire time?
No tie downs, No reigns, It is simply the horse doing what it pleases/ what is most comfortable.
So dont go into the comments pretending you "know about horses" and "have ridden them" and "own one"
because youre wrong. So wrong that I would put you in a beginners class on learning about horses.
Sorry this is quite long, it just fustrates me when people claim to "know the horse and whats abuse". Chances are, No you do
not know this specific horse, and you do not know its riding style.

      And to add
Low headset = horse is engaging the muscles in their back.
And that is a GOOD THING. Horses with a high headset can arch their spine down, which can cause major issues down the line.

He's asking the horse to keep its head low the same as the horse is responding to all other cues and training, sheesh. 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ Yes, at moments it is TOO low, not because of abuse or any bad reason, it's just unnecessarily extreme and ridiculous. Looks stupid and is not allowing the horse to carry naturally where it wants, the same as forcing high carriage. Except forcing high carriage can have negative health impacts whereas low does not. But whatever. They're obviously a great team otherwise, the horse is beautiful trained and conditioned, and it's the sports' chosen aesthetic. 🙄😆 So carry on. Great performance

People who think the head is too low obviously don't know that is actually a good thing. The horse that is lowering the head (willingly by the way) is engaging their spine and back muscles so they can carry the rider weight better. This... is a good thing. It means that the horse is NOT in pain when the rider is on.
A high headset arches the spine down. That creates a weak back. Either they do this from bad training, or from pain. And if it's from bad training, it can cause pain down the road.
Learn about horses before you make a comment.

Look at his conformation. It would be physically uncomfortable for him to go with his neck up in the air. Yes, he's been trained to lower his neck and raise his back, but no amount of "ripping o his face" will produce this relaxation and trust.

There is a lot to love about this but from a dressage viewpoint there are some things not so good. The head carriage is a false engagement and comes from a Western Pleasure background. I do love liberty work though. It is my favorite by far because the horse must choose to stay with you.

I agree and disagree with the comments about the horse's head being low.
The head being low is certainly better than the alternative, being too high and hollowing. And a low head is a sign of relaxation and stretches the back nicely.
However, having the head that low all the time does put a lot of weight on the forehand, which is not ideal, and the horse is not stepping through with the hindlegs to lift the back.
There may be some benefit to working the horse in a higher frame every once in a while to try and encourage those hindlegs to come under a bit more, but considering this horse's conformation, (built downhill) it's a bit unfair to expect the horse to work in that type of collected frame all the time. Is this frame with the lowered head classically correct? No. Is it comfortable for this particular horse? Yes.
Overall, I am very impressed with the horse's willingness and obedience to the rider. It's clear that they have a strong bond and have worked hard to get here.
This is just my opinion, and please be aware that I am evaluating this from a dressage perspective, not a reining perspective where the lowered head may be considered desirable and bred for.

    • @corneliaswiney4212
      @corneliaswiney4212 Рік тому +1

As you said too, I agree and disagree.
The "low head" you see on most reining horses comes from years of trending down, and also hugely corresponds to conformation of the horse. Quarter Horses (the base breed for this style of riding) and their relative breeds, is built on a bit of an upside down, flattened "U" shape, with the neck coming out of the shoulder at a much lower angle than that of a traditional Dressage horse. This said, its probably to blame for most traditional style or dressage inclined riders to seeing the head as "too low". And just as the perfectly collected and upright carriage of a dressage horse looks a little funny to reining folks, we pretty much agree that that's what the horse should be doing. That's what it was bred for.
I'm not saying, however, that *all* of that headset comes from conformation. There is a great deal of training and years of practice to turn out a seasoned reining horse, though QH do tend to be started earlier. And believe it or not, most fundamental, basic training for reining (and a lot of other Western styles) comes from dressage! Flexibility and motion exercises, "two-tracking" and rear end engagement are a must. To you, maybe the backend isn't reaching through and engaging to lift the back. I see a rounded and relaxed horse who was bred to have long, low strides that - by breed standard - should not show a great deal of action.
Though I could go on alllll day about Pleasure horses and their artificial, painful "peanut rolling" headsets and how that needs to be chopped out of the show ring as soon as humanly possible. But that's a rant for another day.
Sorry for the word salad, hope it was educational at least?

    • @aowrya

@@corneliaswiney4212 I think Rose was saying that the back end is not reaching under and engaging to lift the spine and the FRONT end.... Horse is heavy on the forehand and looks like tippy toeing in the back end, plus very short, clipped, restrained strides on all gaits -- that's what it looks like to me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Gorgeous horse and performance though. I agree with most of what both of you said, and I'm learning from the rest. Very nice evaluations, thanks for sharing.

Beautiful performance until the rider mounted. Then it's so sad to see the horse following the fad of holding his head down low, looking depressed and deformed. I'm not tuned into current Western styles, but whenever I see this method on UA-cam I just gag. How did this method of training ever get started? I've heard both sides of the argument, but it's hard to believe something as unnatural as this style of riding is good for the horse. You would never see a horse behaving this way naturally unless he's sick or injured.

The head position of this horse is the result of training. Just as everything else in this performance. It is a routine, a circus act if you like. Classically trained horses (and there are fewer of those than you might think!) are trained to bring their hindquarters under themselves developing those muscles that carry the weight of the rider. They also lower their heads often during their work as a way of stretching and relaxing their back and neck muscles, all on a loose rein. I can see how a lowered head could have developed from ‘cutting’ cattle. But to me they all look to be far too much on the forehand. I might also mention that in Spain and Portugal classically trained stallions are used daily to Hurd and ‘cut’ cattle. No lassoing though. Perhaps that is the true reason for the low head carriage? To keep the horses head and neck out of the way of the rope? I wonder how long these low head carriage horse’s front legs last? For the record I deplore the use of draw reins and ‘rolkur’🤬
