Back then, the Jet Propulsion Lab had a nickname: The Suicide Squad. Early rocket technology tended to be a bit explode-y. Even today, they sometimes go bang.
Yes, "Flash Gordon" series were fantastic, but "Phantom Empire" really knocked me out as a child! My brother and I gave up forever playing "cowboys and Indians" after seeing this chapterplay at our local "Boy's Club." I need to this day to see this chapterplay every year! It goes beyond childhood memories!!! It needs to go to Blu-ray!
I watched Phantom Empire for the first time while researching my video for 1935. Robots and cowboys are a lot of fun together. Some of my favorites from the 1930s have turned to be the serials.

I pretty much said this last time. These presentations are so well done, They are fascinating and captivating. I am a massive sci-fi fan but I am much more familiar with movies later. This shows the influences of the writers and directors whose work is much more familiar to me. What is also really important are the technological and political influences of the time. I already follow a lot of good movie channels, but this is outside their scope. Keep doing what you're doing.
Many elements from the plot of 'The shape of Things to Come' were used in a computer game franchise called 'Fallout'. It was when you described who the 'Wing of the World' represented, that reminded me of an organisation called 'The Institute' and a group named 'The Brotherhood of Steel' who exist as Factions within a very similar future Earth, within the Fallout universe. There is a adaptation of the game on Prime Video, that may be of interest. Thanx and Be Well. Peace All
Another excellent episode, Melissa. As you know, I am one of your avid fans. I particularly enjoyed your quip that "Tim McCoy's gigantic hat is more interesting than most of the actors". Yes, HG Wells' script for "Things to Come" was ponderous at times, but the movie was still a landmark that I added to my DVD collection some years back. The music by Bliss features in a lot of movie music collections, of which I have a couple from decades ago (being also an avid collector of movie music). I watched Cosmic Voyage last year, and agree with your positive comments about it. Sometime I really must watch Devil Doll, so thanks for reminding me about that. Again, your summary of contemporaneous historical events and inventions is valuable.

It sounds like the science fiction movies were at least moving movie technology forward. I think I'll watch Cosmic Voyage, if only to see the effect of the people jumping around with little gravity. Amazing how it is almost realistic to how astronauts leapt about on the moon.

Writing novels and writing screenplays are two very different beasts. Luckily for us, Wells was a great novelist and we remember him more for his literature. William Cameron Menzies created some great visuals that looked great in black and white.

There was a movie I saw once back in the 1950s on TV that was obviously "heavily influenced" by Things to Come with a war and flying wings but the war was between the mountain people and the valley people. I have no idea what the name of the movie was and I've been trying for years to find somebody else who remembers it. No luck so far...
@@marswantsmovies When you get up to the 1950s, you might be doing two episodes per year to keep up with the number of sci-fi films! :-) (that's 2 eps per year of the 1950s, not 2 of your releases per year in the modern day)

RE: Cosmic Journey....I have read that the reason the film is silent is because Stalin didn't want to pay Western Electric or any Capitalist source for licensing of a sound system. ALSO: This movie predicted weightlessness in space years before space travel. It may very well be the first movie to do so.
It goes to show what a difference hiring experts in their fields when making realistic science fiction. The film was ahead of its time. I'm also not surprised if Stalin really didn't want Western Electric installing sound systems.
The robots at 25:38 are awfully reminiscent (hmm, what is the antonym of reminiscent for something which came before? preminiscent?) of Satan's Robot from one of my favorite Star Trek: Voyager "something goes wrong on the holodeck" episodes.
They're practially robot cousins. I just double checked online and the designers were influenced by Undersea Kingdom and Mysterous Doctor Satan from 1940. I love how everything is connected.
Cosmic voyage was a bit of an eyeopener for me. On UA-cam it can be found with a recent Soundtrack which makes it even better. No idea who did it though. Sowjet Sci Fi is much more positive then that from the West. On average I prefer it to the inner fear / bad consciousness “psychology” that is prevalent elsewhere, even when much of that positivity has a propaganda background. Anyway: Hopefully many more of such jewels wil be reviewed here. They really deserve to be better known. 😁
Cosmic Voyage was such a hopeful film, more so than much of the sci-fi today. It will be interesting to see if this film gets more recognition as human travel back to the moon.
Both Cosmic Voyage from 1936 and Woman in the Moon from 1929 had scientific advisors who were experts in the field of rocket science so they had some pretty good theories based on the laws of gravity and I'm sure other scientific principles that a physics major could explain (I was an art history major). Mix theory with sci-fi imagination from the writers and Cosmic Voyage looks pretty accurate from a 2024 perspective.
Things to Come was far too heavy a movie for the 1930s, but it is a very good movie nonetheless. I saw it when I was seven, after having watched the original Star Trek and I was not put off by the less kid friendly content.....I was seven years old and I just didn't care, I know a good movie when I see it. The Devil Doll, I saw that one around the same time, and I thought it was so ridiculous a premise that it just had to be a dark comedy, it was kind of funny after all. On a side note, during the segment on Flash Gordon, there was a clip of Ming whispering into some fellow's ear. Look at that man,and tell me that he DOESN'T look like Q from Star Trek TNG....I had to pause and look twice because I didn't believe my eyes. This makes this episode even better for me, I enjoy a universe that will throw a random pop culture reference to me unexpectedly. I was already looking forward to the video, and now I'm just giddy. Thanks, I really appreciate the work you are doing. 🎉
I always think of the paranoia driven stuff from the 1950s, giant insects and whatnot. I was born in the early 60s and I have to wonder just how frightened people were at the time.

Visually, Things to Come outdoes all the other sci-fi films of 1936. The story is OK. But I do recommend it.
