  • Well the big day arrived and what a day it was! I think we did ok for our first time and the slab is perfectly suitable for the workshop shed its intended for. Lots to improve on still! :-)

    Can you have a half'n'half shed base that's half concrete, half wood posts? I have an existing 6x4 slab and looking to replace 6x4 shed with a 6x10. Getting more concrete in for a full slab is next to impossible due to location.

    Going off to quick happens to the best of us and not enough men. I did a job before and 2 fella where to help me ended up in small car crash on the way to the job and the concrete lorry just pulled up. Theres me with only 2 people with me and my 14yr old and the sun was splitting the trees. Lets just say i was fucked! Ended up lifting a section of it i wasnt happy with! Was embarrassed to say the least when the client was watching me trying to finish it in that heat!

    Please don’t walk on concrete bare foot, it draws the moisture out of your feet and then your skin will crack. New concrete will also burn the skin, especially on small children 👍😄.

    With concrete a little too much is always enough .
    Ideal scenario is have a second fill like a small shed base or footing you can use up the excess .
    Other ideal scenario is plenty man power, couple more guys been useful and super useful if things start going wrong ...
    Job jobbed and sure finish be good enough, my first workshop was finished with just plank tampering it and that turned out level .
    Have a rest you look burned out ...

  • @darrenbrewster3345

    Tim
    Hard job is working with concrete bud I’m a uk based joiner and have worked on big shuttering jobs (75 m3 my biggest in one day🥴🥴🥴)
    One bit of advice bud take all the braces out of your shutters in next day or so other wise you will have a ( sorry for the French) twat of a job getting them off and out of the joint areas
    Concrete is classed as green atm which will hold its shape so the shutters can be as we say cracked so that air can get to the lower part of the concrete
    👍👍👍👍👍

    Great work guys! We had a similar situation with lack of experience for timings etc when we did the pour for a large shed base 13'x10' I think. We used the same method of skimming first with a length of timber then bull floating. Unfortunately we now have quite a large puddle form by the shed door every time it rains due to going too early with the bull float and causing it to dish slightly. Oh well you live and learn.

  • @petemoring67

    20+ years ago I screeded a floor at the local Wargrave vineyard - as it was then - Rock's Wines - (no more)
    We ordered 2 x wagons of read-mix screed but what turned up was 2 wagons like yours, except the mix was a 'lot' drier. We complained, they wouldn't budge. I had just one labourer and had to screed this dirty great bottling shed before it got dark in the evening. Had to keep wetting it down to keep it useable ..... One of those days you wonder 'how' you got through it. We had to have a couple of days off after :-(
    So I can certainly empathise with you boys, and just 'how' hard a day it was for you :-)

    Concrete is one of the things I really don't like to do. I have done enough decent size concrete pours for friends and it is really not fun and you never have enough people on hand. It's right up there with roofing but more anxiety since you have to get it done before it starts setting up. My only issue with yours is why didn't you pour up against both sides of the drain channel?

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  5 років тому

      Just because the workshop slab is level and the drain isn’t. This way I figured the timber will come out easily and I can just back fill more accurately especially around the dpm. 👍

    I totally feel for you on this one! We had the same experience last year when my wife and I did the concrete poor for our 80m2 extension. Really glad the driver gave a few tips and the odd helping hand. It's a pretty stressful time in a build. Good job! :) Next time try and get a concrete mixer with a conveyer belt on it. Usually reach about 15 meters!

    I’ve watched a lot of American vids on this and have noticed they always put expansion joints in to avoid cracks (looks to me like an inch deep line through the concrete at regular intervals). Is it actually necessary and do we do this in the UK?

      I think the rebar must help prevent it, they call it 'anti crack mesh' , they do lay internal floors in the solid after all. and on a barn conversion they can be even bigger.

    I thought that these days we are told NOT to have
    surfaces that create ' run-off ' during wer weather etc.
    We are told be Building Control at Local Authorities to have
    surfaces that let rainwater seep through and drain naturally into
    the subsoil . Which does not contribute to ' localised flooding '
    when water has no-where to go and floods at lowest points
    in the locality etc !
    Other than for footings etc , this type of ' concrete hard standing '
    should be avoided whenever possible .
    🇬🇧🇬🇧

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  5 років тому

      It will have a building over it though? As for the section of path, it’s just replacing the 70 year old one that was there before. You are correct as to driveway regs though. It’s more about how you manage the water than what material you use, ie install soakaway, etc to avoid adding to mains drainage or surface water runoff. 👍
