0:00 Overview
0:23 The “2nd Last Defender”
0:50 Three Main Points
1:05 The Key Moment (Most Important!)
1:50 Cannot Be Offside When Behind the Ball
2:15 No Offsides during Throw-Ins, Corner Kicks & in your own half
2:33 Review + Note on Deflections
Offside Rule Summary:
1. Offside position = when ahead of (*see 2) both the ball & the 2nd last defender
2. *"Ahead of" does not include arms and hands
3. Foul is called when player becomes active in play (i.e. receives a pass, blocks goalkeeper's view, impedes an opposing player)
4. No offsides during throw-ins, goal kicks, corner kicks, or in the player's own half
5. Pass must be from a teammate for offside to be considered
6. Key moment is "When the ball is PASSED, NOT WHEN IT'S RECEIVED!"
7. Deflections off a player or a post are not considered; the key moment would still be the original pass (this includes a goalkeeper making a save: the rebound position is not considered... only the position of the player as his teammate was taking the original shot)

Hello to those watching Qatar v Ecuador! The offside decision was correct.
I don’t get the point for this rule ngl
I still don’t unde
@@Pebblebrook imagine attacker had a lofted pass coming to him and the defenders were a mile away and he scores, bit unfair isn’t it
Can an *arm* make you offside?
@@justgo_withit8850 He mentioned this in the beginning. 0.30 secs onward.
Refs need to watch this
You've got to be joking. They most certainly know the most basic rule of the game. The difficulty is in applying it accurately judging them. Stop hating on them.
Kai H. It’s a joke
YES DUDE THEY ALWAYS CALL OFFSIDES WHEN ITS NOT
Kai H.
Its a joke dumbass
Fact
Best explanation I have seen thus far.
John King I still don't understand it 😂
Ray Ray
Dumb
i still dint get it
agree
Yes me too didn't get it ray ray stupid
Thanks I finally can stop making 20 offside passes in Fifa
That's why I'm here 🤣
😂😂😂 Because of Fifa I'm here too
@@DudeJunks Stopped playing it but for some reason that's why I'm here
Dude you literally made me laugh so hard! Thanks for humorous comment👍

i've looked at other explanations over and this has, by far, the clearest explanation of an offside rule. Key point being mentioned here can also be seen in van persie's diving goal against spain.. :)
I came here confused after seeing that goal.
At 2:04 I don’t get the rule
@@coolcucumber2968 when Willian pass the ball he was onside he ran all the way to the box still onside because u can never be OFF side AFTER kickin the ball while bein ON SIDE so he can receive the pass again n it still counts
@@pepperbomb7816
Lies again? Referee slow
Speed was onside.
exactly what i was here for and thinking

My man
100% agreed
That's what I was looking
I like that you included the SECOND TO LAST DEFENDER rule. So many commentators doesn't know that, as well as players.
There is usually a goalkeeper in net, who count as 1 defender, and then there have to be at least another of the outfield players closer to their goal. If the goalkeeper is for some reason behind the attacker, but there is an outfield player of the opposition at their goal line, the attacker will still be offside because there's ONLY ONE DEFENDER THERE!!
hmm interesting point. Are u sure?
Why is it a foul to dodge the goalkeepee till the very last moment before shooting? I think off side thing is applicable if an attacker in present in the box , actually I remember I was called of once for standing near the second box but with no boll on foot, I as a kid only in fluke ran with the boll in the goal else most of the times I would rather take shots at the goal from distance though 😊.
2:07 would not be considered as off side on either of the attackers, any of them could of taken a fishing shot and weren't be applicable for fouling. But morally I think it's better to dodge many alone rather than dodging one or two defenders with a team of more attackers .

@@dwaipayandattaroy9801 207 would have been offside if the ball was passed and the attacker was in front of the ball
Thank you... I played a game last night... and that exact scenario happened... the referee didn't call offsides because there was a defender inside the goal... but the goalkeeper wasn't behind the ball... He said there was one defender behind the ball... I said there's supposed to be 2... usually the keeper is a given... he didn't know WTF I was talking about... I'm like... how the fuck are you a referee when you don't know the rules of the game?
The kid at the beginning - hanging around the opposing goalie - asking for the "PASS" made it clear to me why the rule is there. That helped a lot. The explanations people give should start with that more often. Nice one.
That kid is me at ten years old 😭
Yes, that's why the rule exists but when you watch professional soccer you can see that people are never that obviously offside and if they are they don't go for the ball.
@@FuSoFo
no 2. example. 2 vs 1.
why no offside?
i always watch like this. reffere say it offside. how.
The rule is too strict though
still don't get it
PM Cruz are u 3 years old?
PM Cruz are you an idiot? or just a troll?
PM Cruz I still don't get it either.
it is offside when your teammate didn't pass yet while you're outside the defense of the 2nd defender.. It's NOT offside if your teammate passed the ball while you're up to pass the 2nd defender
Christopher Holroyd bro u r not alone
Excellent video! Really like the emphasis on the "second-to-last defender" because offsides happen plenty of times when the goalkeeper isn't the last man -- and that often confuses people. You should've also mentioned that if the ball is scored when an opposing player is in an offside position obstructing the goalkeeper's vison, then the goal is ruled out and a free kick is awarded.
This is what I was looking for 2:00, when both the players are offside, and it explained very well that the second player must be behind the ball the moment of the pass.
What if it’s a 2 on 0, same rule applies? He has to be behind the ball still correct?
Imagine this, the offside line is always somewhere, and always moving. If the ball is ahead from the second to last defender, than the ball's position become the offside line.
Why isn’t the pass between the teammates at 1:56 offsides when he was in front of him when he passed it??
because they were in their own half
@@ellarecker9253
@@ellarecker9253 because they are on the defending half
this rule is crazy I mean everything happens so fast how can anyone remember whether the player was on the line of 2 opponets when the ball was passed
just crazy rule
Yeah I'm just wondering how referees can see that fast.
var
Thats y there are linesmen with flags on each line of the pitch(near the corner flag) their main task is to help the referee who cant see everything as he is human.
Not too hard when you try it
For that reason, I prefer hockey's ouffside. It's an unmistakable blue line. All about the puck carrier and the line, very black and white.
Finally ! Thank you for such a clear and easy to digest explanation of offside.
The funniest thing is, i am new to soccer, and have asked people who watch soccer all their lives,
to explain off side, and they said " they dunno....... "/// " GOAL !!!!!!!"
anyhow, thanks again
I now understood. This is a way to prevent cherry picking, which is used in basketball more often. But since the football field is a lot bigger than a basketball court, this is necessary.
Watching Argentina vs Saudi Arabia, Argentina did alot of offsides, I m new to learn football ⚽.
Thanks, this is by far the clearest and most thorough explanation of the rule that I've ever seen.
I watched five videos on this rule before I finally found this one...the one that makes sense. thank you!
Who’s here after the Argentina match against the Saudi‘s? 😂😂😂😂😂
Lmao Saudi be fooling Argentina with those offsides
Thanks for explaining offside. I understand it way better than before. I'm only confused about the second defender.
Hudaman the second last defender is really the last defender if you exclude the goalie
Imraan Bulbulia Now, I know a good amount of the rules in football (soccer). It is a really unique sport and more Americans should watch football (soccer). I’m a NY Red Bulls and Chelsea fan!😎
Thank you for giving the ''when the ball is passed'' precision. I've looked at a another video and was very puzzled because it did not match at all what we see in games. Makes sense thanks to you !
U are the best, if seen so many fancy explanation but u kept it sweet and simple. Thanks a lot 👍👍
Who are here to learn what offside is after watching Argentina vs. Saudi Arabia
So for gamers, offside is camping where your enemies respawn before they respawn.
i’ve literally played soccer for 9 years and never understood offsides- thank you!!
Wow
How
wow😂
Thanks for taking the time to explain this rule.
I’ve known how offside works like forever but I literally just thought yesterday what if there is two players past the last defender and only the keeper too beat can they pass and this vid helped so yeah
literally came to learn the rule just because of the Speed scenario
lmao same
The Best and clear Explanation video 👏🏻
Thx m8,it has been 2 month I am looking for to know what’s offside and by this vid I learned. Thx m8
Speed needs to watch this
lmao
still couldnt get it..i m so much into the game..i avoid getting into these complications 😂
This is a great explanation, thank you!
Really informative vid, Ty! ❤
U explained it really well. I wish I could like this video a 100 times
The only reason I searched for this was because of 2:00.
I figured out some of the others on my own
Same, I was rewatching that game and wondering why Willian was not offside
Who else came here from the Sidemen match?
Thank you so much!
I needed this 😂
Best explanation for offside I've seen
Clear, specific and concise. Thanks.
I need these videos I’ve been watching soccer all my life as a Hispanic child I also played it for 2 years and I’m try to start playing it again I signed up but I never understood how offsides worked that’s the only thing I never understood this will help me
Incomprehensible. Would love to see explanation
Speed watching this be like
Who came here after the Bayern Madrid game lol
Dynalmite lol Ronaldo was not offside
mep
damn bro thanks. that was a very good explanation. understood every single bit
Thanks man this has always been hard for me
2:01 this is what i came for i was always confused with this
Everyone here trying to understand why speed goal was invalid lmao
so why was it, i dont play football
@@JungKookOfficiaI because then strikers would just hang around the goalkeeper, call for the ball, someone pass to them from across the whole field and then they tap it in and repeat. It’s like when you play football in your neighborhood or at school and the fastest black guy runs to the touchdown faster than anyone and catches the hail mary. No chance to play defense so this rule exists to stop that from happening
@@JungKookOfficiaI think of it as american football NFL kick off. at the beginning of each play everyone is formed in line, you cannot have a defender or attacker from opposite team on the other side of field you have to go through it. i hope it makes a simpler explanation.
Thanks for the clarity
My Wife has a degree in offside because of this video. Cheers mate.
I feel bad for all those people who couldn't understand it. 😢😢
Still cant lol
can you do the new fifa offside rule ?
Thanks a lot for the info!
Thank you. I didn't ever understand why passing a penalty kick isn't offside, but now I get it.
Thank you this I kept getting offside calls on me in fifa and didn't even know what it meant
Someone needs to explain this to my coach 😂😂
If there was no offside rule, football would essentially turn into a game similar to lawn tennis. No midfield play, just a bunch of players lobbing the ball at each other from opposite ends of the pitch.
Thanks for the best explanation of the offside rule I've heard so far. This will certainly help me a lot in my game.
i thought offside meant that you cant be ahead of the other team’s players
I always thought it was to do with where the player is in relation to the white lines on the pitch.
Yeah that last clip was onside from AshleyYoung, but it was disallowed anyway, should've been 0-3 to ManUtd and after this ManCity got to 2-2, but I suppose the shitty offside decision made for a great football moment with ManUtd scoring the winner in stoppage-time....a bit like in 99 when Giggs scored that wonder goal in the FAcup semi-final replay against Arsenal, wouldn't have happened if ManUtd's ONside goal in the first game had counted.
+dcvbhtrdf Yeah, the win would have likely been sealed at 3-0 but RVP's goal was a fantastic moment
Here after the offside trap employed by SA against Argentina. Thank you, I finally understand how offside works...
Igual medio raro, Lautaro no estaba onside cuando le pasaron la pelota?
Hey great video. Im curious to know your opinion. philadelphia vs Queretaro philly gets a goal in the 100th minute. Do you think the was onside or offside.? Thanks in advance
Whenever I play FIFA and get called offside, the commentators usually say "Too early! Offside." What do they mean when they say "Too early"
+Brandon Manley They mean the attacking player made his run too early i.e. he was in an offside position when the ball was played
They shuld of stopped a bit later. Cause sometimes it ends up not offside
Probbaly because you passed it to a player who was offside but was making his way onside. As in, you didn't give him time to be onside, you passed it too early before he could be onside.
the mean the guy who received the ball got to excited and ran forward past the defenders BEFORE his teammate passed the ball.
They mean you must have been born too early because you're a fucking idiot.
No matter how many different offside rule explanations videos I have watched already, I think I will never understand I don't get it.. It's very confusing 😂😂😂
What's confusing about it?
Hello again, seems I'm back here every 4 years
Awesome vid!
you forgot the case when the whole Team except for that goal keep is on the other half of the field it's not an offside .
What if the attacker is behind the goalkeeper but there’s a defender behind the attacker, is the attacker considered offside? In fifa they count it offside
Yehya Aljerjawi no, in the scenario you mentioned that would be onside
Yehya Aljerjawi If you meant the attacker is in between the last defender and the goalkeeper, He is in an offside position. Don't take the goalkeeper differently. The attacker needs to be behind or level with the second last defender. In this case, the goalkeeper is the second last defender and a defender near the goal line is the last defender.
He didn't explain the well
Excelente explicação!
thanks this was helpful:)
This is overly complicated
still confusing af but thanks anyways
Very well explained
Keep it up🙏🙏🙏
Excellent description, thanks! Can use more succinct "penultimate" instead of wordy "second-to-last."
STERLING GOAL DISALLOWED??
ABSOLUTELY BACKPASS, NOT OFFSIDE!!! IT'S A ROBBER!!
Actually, Bernardo Silva got a touch on the ball so it is no longer considered a backpass, and that became the moment where the offside decision was made. Agüero was offside.
Who’s still confused?
Only.whitney’s Channel Me
Only.whitney’s Channel
Nothing confusing about it.
Are you a football fan?
Rangers Daft probs not
No need for 15 minutes video, yours explains it well in 3 minutes. It's good that FIFA changes the rule a bit. They allow play to continue if the offside is tight and then check it later on VAR. According to the rule, Ronaldo's brace vs Bayern were offside. Not to trigger war here I'm just stating fact. And I supported Madrid then so I kept quiet lol
This is the best explanation you could have done of the offside rule. Congrats !
why not show the actual footage of when it is offside instead of just writing it down. thats the purpose of a video. i dont want to READ a video.
lol
Greys he does actually
This video made it more confusing than ever!
Best explanation,thanks
Correct me if I'm wrong. If a player in offside position (other half)recieves a ball from the opposite team, he will not be adjudged offside. But if it is deflected from an opponent he it will be offside as per 2:46
Offside Rule Explained (in 3 minutes)
***** Really nigga
2:57 actually, not 3:01
No 3:01 minutes
If it takes 3 minutes to explain the offside rule then you’re doing something wrong
This was so hard for me to explain you did it easy haha
He's explaining the offside rules like he doesn't want to wake his parents.
Kill the offside rule and open the game up to more scoring.
if they did this you idiot then the score would be 153-123!it would be boring af!!!!!
that would be fucking better then watching a 90 minute or even 120 minute game with a score of 0-0
Then it'd be like watching a school playground match
Are you kidding it will be like player standing in goal with opponent goal keeper waiting for the pass 😂
Anna that is so true lol
Very nice explanation
helped me cause just got on to offside football
Best explanation I have found for use with my U14s. Thanks!
The corner arc is 1 yard from the corner. The ball is placed anywhere within or on the arc, goal line or touchline in that corner.
If as player places the ball on the farthest part of the arc, a teammate standing on the goalline is ahead of the ball and potentially ahead of the first and second defenders.
But, not penalized, if the rest of law 11 and 17 are met.
thanks for explaining
Thanks man please make some more videos on tActics i need to know the FALSE 9
Great explanation! Also, does it count as an offside if you’re involved in the play from an offside position but you didn’t touch the ball?
depends kinda
Thanks for explanation. Mexico had 2 game winning goals taken because of offsides and that was a shame. It reminds me of clear path foul in NBA. These rules were made to protect the integrity of the game. Your last example showed onside but no defenders were ahead of the attackers at the time of the kick, that confused me. Well Go Brazil 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Thank you so much
so helpfull
Thank you very happy to know
