I was 17 in 87’. This video brought back memories of discount stores, pay phones, newspapers and strangers who just smiled at you when they saw you were filming them. Zayre and Kmart were king of the discount stores back then and malls were the original “apps” of the real world where people actually met each other. What a great time capsule this video is. 👍
My mother shared this with me because it features her in this video. Seeing and hearing her as she was nearly three decades ago (which was long before I was born, btw) is so surreal.

This is an an amazing video! I'm fairly new to the area so is my first look inside Crystal Point Mall outside some fuzzy pictures. And cool this has been up on UA-cam so long. Vintage on its own as well. And I really need to know more about this diner train car themed McD! I try to research history of the area for stuff to cover on my channel and I have never heard of this. Looked awesome!
I was 6 or 7 during this time and I remember this mall faintly..plus the McDonalds that was a train...surreal...and Spiess (my late mom loved that store)
So weird seeing myself (I am the first girl you see in Kmart - I’m trying to hide behind a folder.) from 1987. Those were the best of times when life was simple and people were nice.
Wow , as much as I am proud to be an 80s baby, the more I remember shopping at Zayre although they have the star/asterisk logo but the font seems different but most Zayre stores have the "cooper font" on the building, sign, everywhere in that whole store , aisle signs, restroom signs, and on those thick rectangular check out booth lamps. This is a cool video!!!😉👍🏾
Brings back memories. I was 16 at the time. Hard to believe it is all gone now. Remember when you could actually smoke a cigarette inside the mall? And always in the snack bar that most stores had as well. Thanks for sharing.
This is fascinating to watch for some reason. I was born in 1984 and remember going to the local Zayre and K-Mart with my mom in the late-'80s. I can remember sitting in one of those K-Mart cafes like it was yesterday. Maybe it's just because I was a little kid at the time, but I remember a different, more positive, more innocent energy back then. I'd love to visit those days again but at least the memories remain. Thanks for sharing this fun little time capsule.
People still won’t talk to you there! Haha I used to work at the restaurant in the mall before this was shot. Late 70’s. Rt. 14 was 2 lanes then. Lol I was the house on the corner of 14 and 176 where the huge party was a happening. Lol thanks for the post.
Omg!!! One of my first memories is being pushed in a stroller in Crystal Pointe Mall and going trick-or-treating. And so many good times in the McDonald's train! #nostalgia
25 years ago... takes me back. I'm 35 now and lived in Lake in the Hills from '79 to '89 so we went there all the time. Wasn't there a roller rink in Crystal Point Mall at one time..... i believe my uncle Randy Zucaro had something to do with it originally. Not sure. I remember the entrance of Zayre back in the 80's smelled like popcorn and sometimes chocolate or candy corn mixed together. lol The McDonald's train, I remember that. Very cool vid.
I miss Crystal Point Mall! I remember when it was being built (circa 1975), and I remember it's demise (circa 1998). It has been said the new owners in the 1990's let it die so it could be turned into big box stores, well now they are failing! I'd like to see this little mall come back..
So weird. I love it. I was about 4 or 5 at the time this was filmed, but I remember shopping at zayer with my mom very clearly. I miss it. I'm also probably the youngest person alive who remembers Woolworth's.
Super cute video. I was 17 at the time this was shot. Notice how people appear to be more easy going ? Times were different and the malls were great for shopping, eating and socializing. ❤
Yes, 1987 means I was 10 or 11, but the 80's are filled with great memories. Loved seeing the guy try out the skateboard and enjoy it - 1987 is justly the year I first heard of skateboards and I surely would've liked to have gotten one then! At least I'm enjoying one right now. Even though no one smoked in the video (making it even more lovable as I hate smoke), it's still totally 80's!
i know it wasn't like everyone carried a camera in their pocket in these days but i wish people would have filmed stuff more. gives the younger generations an idea of what shopping used to look like.
1987 I was in the NAVY on a submarine and under the ocean when this was orig made I sure miss those older days love zayre store back home in Louisville KY .
3 years after HS dam i feel old , love the footage great times , wish their was more mall footage and the train car from the old MD's what a flash back , everyone seem so happy back then lol...would love to get a hole of the original tape and try to get better quality
WOW~!! THIS WAS SOOOOOO FREAKING AWESOME!! I love the 80's. I was probably only like 10 years old when you made this video, but, I remember the 80's like it was yesterday. I miss the jelly shoes, why weren't there any the shoe section???!! This is now my favorite video on youtube! GREAT JOB!
1987- I was 16, so I suppose I was just as annoying as you guys were in the video. How fun to look back on stuff like that. I grew up in Glen Ellyn, we hit a lot of malls back in the day, but I don't think we ever went there.. Thanks for sharing. :)
OMG! This was so much fun to watch... (Tthat's sort of sad, isn't it? =\ ) It was funny to see all these stores in my home town of Crystal Lake, Illinois! The only one that's still open & in the same location is the K-Mart... I also enjoyed the hair, clothes. shoes.... Oh, styles of the 1980's, please please never come back! LOL. Thx for posting this. =]
I used to go to zayre dept store and jewel osco with my mom and my two aunts when I was 2 years old, there's a lot good stuff but I wonder where that store went?
Where was this Crystal Point Mall--in what state? I worked at two Zayre's stores--at the snack bar and in the hardware department at Zayre's in Waltham, Mass.; then in hardware at the store in Hadley, Mass., while I attended the University of Massachusetts/Amherst. This was between 1977-80. I also recall the Zayre's jingle when I was a kid, used in radio & TV ads for the "Back To School" sales: "Before you go back to school, go to Zayre/You can learn the ABC's of savings there."
Awesome video, this is like a time machine. Amazing quality as well considering it was made with one of those bulky VHS camcorders you held on your shoulder. I grew up in those years, i am roughly around the same age, give or take a year. I could see myself cutting up like this back then, people really didn't care. These days stores will throw you out and maybe even call the police if you try to film inside.
Rad stuff Mike. What was the record store right next to Spiess named? Was that Orange records? I worked at Spiess for a while, too, like in 89 or so....man the Crystal Point Mall. Token Tuesday!
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Zayre was on NW highway and Keith, along with the Jewel. Those stores have been divided up. Zayre is TJ Maxx and Savers, Jewel is divided into Dollar Tree and Petco. The "new" Jewel is closer to Crystal point mall, next to Hobby Lobby, which used to be Venture. Great Video!
Thank God you didn't hit the hot dog stand...I was probably sporting my hotdog apron!!! Man I loved that mall...hated that job...all the tough guys from the Machine would make fun of me...assholes!!!

Fantastic, Zayre was the only store we went to pretty much in the 80s. Growing up in Maine there wasn't much else. Thanks for posting.
I lived in Bagohr... You havuh Mahd'ns?

Its amazing the change in people's reaction when filmed from 87 to now

Hell, you could smoke in thuh grocery store and IN thuh hospital
Cool Video i don't think we had that store where i lived. i guess most people back then were not used to seeing video camera's.
The incredible late 1980's in America.

Man i miss the 80's!!!!!!!!!!!!
i remember this mall had a kickass arcade back in the day
The Machine
10 tokens for a dollar Tuesdays
Great time capsule video! I remember going to Zayre when I was a kid... I was born in 76.
I worked at Kmart and jewel in 1984. I spent a lot of time at the arcade called the machine.

Man I remember these places like it was yesterday 😁
I was born tail end of 1987 in December . So this is what it was like in 1987. Awesome!
This is 1 of the awesomest bids onutube! I wish everybody had made videos like this in the 80's .
I miss Crystal Point Mall! I remember when it was being built (circa 1975), and I remember it's demise (circa 1998). It has been said the new owners in the 1990's let it die so it could be turned into big box stores, well now they are failing! I'd like to see this little mall come back..
Great 80s vintage footage. Its not easy to find footage like this!
As a former CL resident...this is hilarious. Zayre? Totally forgot about it until I stumbled upon this vid.
Man, this takes me back....
*sniff*
White pumps with tan pantyhose was the order of the day back then....mullets too.....
Wow, this was a trip down memory lane :) I spent so many hours in that mall! Though, I could have sworn that Zayre was closed by 87.
southilgurl2003 They were still open in '87. Shopped there for most of my college supplies in '87
Does anyone know how bought the property? In 1990?
So weird. I love it. I was about 4 or 5 at the time this was filmed, but I remember shopping at zayer with my mom very clearly. I miss it. I'm also probably the youngest person alive who remembers Woolworth's.
feel sad for the puppy 😥
Classic 👍
I'd just do a one way trip to the 80's!
Imagine a time when you could go to the mall and not have to worry about thugs, gunfire, everyone got along... Long live the 80s ❤
Oh gosh the old K-Mart Sign....Forgot that it used to look that way.
Super cute video. I was 17 at the time this was shot. Notice how people appear to be more easy going ? Times were different and the malls were great for shopping, eating and socializing. ❤
I used to work at Zayre in HS. In Lyons, IL. Harlem and Pershing Rd. I also worked at Jewel... right across the sreet. Fun times.

@Superdave3426 I used to work at Zayre. The Zayre divison was sold to Ames who closed them or changed them to Ames stores in 89.
1987 I was in the NAVY on a submarine and under the ocean when this was orig made I sure miss those older days love zayre store back home in Louisville KY .
I love this! So much fun! And RIP train McDonalds.

Great video of the late 80’s!, but the music doesn’t fit
Before camera phones
wow, if only there was a mall here today....

That is Crystal Lake, Illinois. I went to all these places! I was hoping to see myself at Crystal Point Mall! I was 20 in 1987....
LOL Zayre I just can't live without it... They'd never be able to get away with that these days, they'd get kicked out in minutes.
Cool video! I wish you had gone into The Machine!
Stay tuned. More to come. Nothing much older than this. But around this time.
Walgreen's was always the "cut-thru" store...... You could enter in the center of the "Mall".
anymore footage of either toy sections in Zayres or Kmart?
OMG! This was so much fun to watch... (Tthat's sort of sad, isn't it? =\ )

Ha, loved it. People don't even flinch when they see a recording camera anymore.

People were layed-back, cool and friendly back then, today you'll get greeted by mean-spirited, paranoid, suspicious, easily offended, scared sheep.
i love the 80s
Back in thuh day when mcdonald's said "dozens and dozens served".
Cut it out this was 1987 not 1957
i was 8 or 9 years old depending on what month this was filmed
@pannoni1 Actually that "anachronistic crap" was state of the art 1980's music.
omg i so remember those eateries!!!!!
Ha! Hard to believe it's all gone... I pumped a lot of change into The Machine. Token Tuesday!!!
That Jewel employee, was a methhead. So sad I never got to experience Zayre, I was only 3 when it closed.
Yeah, but nowadays you bring a camera in a store like K-Mart and they'll kick you out in two seconds
Amazing, nowadays you'd be kicked out of a mall for filming (supposedly because the store logos are copyrighted, which is ridiculous)
Rad stuff Mike.
What was the record store right next to Spiess named? Was that Orange records? I worked at Spiess for a while, too, like in 89 or so....man the Crystal Point Mall. Token Tuesday!
There was a record store in there called Sound City USA
:23 does this remind anyone of Pine Hills in Back To The Future?
30 minutes before zombie apocalypses.
Nice seeing a time when people weren't glued to their phones like zombies.
Good memories ❤
4:35 ......and Ann likes it.
Cause I got high, Cause I got high ,cause I got high
I got my ear pierced in that mall when i was 5.
Who remembers the giant ass gumball machine?
Like tuh take some of those mullets and put uhm on thuh mantel tuh show off
It's interesting how they continually use the world "filming".
@scorpioeddie84
Somebody build a goddamn time machine!
hahaha 3:37, crystal lake is still the same today.CLC class of 2010

God KMart change some over the years
Fun fact: Kmart was the first United States retailer to offer internet sales in 1998... they failed because they didn't implement it right
@BuckyOHare Cellphones?
Thank God you didn't hit the hot dog stand...I was probably sporting my hotdog apron!!! Man I loved that mall...hated that job...all the tough guys from the Machine would make fun of me...assholes!!!
THATS NOT ZAYRE THATS KMART
Watch till the end of the video. Zayre is at the end
Would have been better in higher quality, but you did take me back to a time that is sadly gone perhaps forever. Thanks for posting!
It was fun to see the old stores, but you guys were so obnoxious! Although I guess we all are at that age.
@The096757 Wrong!
ouch.... I meant STREET.
Ann is so freaking HOT!
@UAskygal As bad as those styles were I think some of the styles of today are worse, like those skinny jeans people wear lol
it's on 0:43😠😠😠😠😠
Loved it! Hey, there was some pretty hot chicks in K-Mart!! ^_^
All of those people are probably dead now : (
Well... at least their hairstyles...
Still here, just older.
What a seriously dumb and ignorant thing to say.
Dude Ann was smoking hot. You should have been tapping that
