- I want to explore making hand files in the shop, and that requires some tools. In the previous video, I made an anvil to help protect the file teeth when cutting. To do the cutting, I need some chisels. Not sure which steel would be best, I made an assortment: O-1(oil hardening), W-1(water hardening) and the air hardening steels: D2, H13 and S-7. The cutting angle is 50 degrees, found in the book: "Metalworking" edited by Paul Hasluck.

So, I watch another channel called Clickspring. He showed in great detail how ancient blacksmith's may have made files. I am very glad you posted this content, because it show how a modern Backsmith would accomplish the exact same task.

I knew I recognized the name Paul Hasluck, but until I looked online I didn't realize how many books he'd written. I remember his name from when Lindsay publications was active and reprinting so many old time books. I have a number of those Lindsay reprints of various volumes. The "Metalworking" volume by Hasluck is readily downloadable as a .pdf file online, -- I just read (or re-read possibly) his account of the manufacturing of files, very interesting indeed and I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes for you. You probably already know all this but Clickspring down in Australia has a nice video on YT of making files from mild steel and then carburizing and hardening them. He's replicating ancient Greek methods of working. All this is so interesting, thanks for posting!
Yeah, I kinda want to try his approach with carburizing along with using modern steels.
I read that title a dozen times and it always said "Chinese experiments". I was sitting here thinking, "What's he making? What's chinese experiments?" Lesson learned - finish my coffee before I start trying to think! 🤣

I want to try two hammer styles. French, then the odd shaped English version.(file cutting types).
