  • We are proud to share the story of this amazing 1969 Plymouth Sport Fury Convertible! The owner Judy won this car in 1969 by winning the Chrysler Plymouth Division College Queen of the year competition and could choose any car from Chrysler Plymouth! Think she chose well with this Sport Fury (I might have taken the Road Runner). The car is a survivor with mostly original paint, original top and interior. The car was unfortunately stolen from Judy's house a couple of months ago but good news is she got it back and it wasn't hurt that bad. We are getting in the shop to fix a couple of issues with it. Super fun car to drive and we are happy to share it with all of you.

My grandfather gave my Mother an opportunity to choose any car in 1973 off a used car lot. She chose a 1969 roadrunner 383 4 speed Sunfire yellow with 11,628 miles.

Seeing that car brings back a memory. It was around November of 1969 and I was out with my dad shopping for a new car. We were in a Plymouth dealership and in the showroom they had several '69 models they were trying to clear out. One of them was a 69 Sport Fury convertible in B5 blue with a white interior. It was pretty well optioned the same way as the one shown. My dad wanted a convertible and would probably have bought it except it was too long and wouldn't fit in our garage. It just so happened there was a 69 Sport Satellite convertible in the showroom. It was Bronze with a tan interior, bucket seats & console. Eventually the car became mine and I fully restored it as salt had done its damage. Being Chrysler Crazy I went through different powerplants and transmissions on it. I restored quite a few different Plymouth and Dodge muscle cars through the years but always kept my dad's car. He appreciated that I had kept and restored it and it put a smile on my face to see how happy it made him. He passed away in 97' and I hung on to it until 2004. People would say why did you sell it and I'd tell them it wasn't the same without my dad being around to enjoy it. It's hard for them to understand but it just wasn't the same. I haven't seen it since but it went to a good home where it could bring some joy to others and help them create memories. RIP Dad.

Love mid 60s to early 70s full-size American cars. Not many things in life bring a smile like rolling down the interstate @ 80,cruise set, and Zepplin blaring in a beautiful land yacht.

I have a 69 Fury III too, it runs fine but they sure hit you for parts now days. I bought a couple heater valves this year (one for a spare) and they were over $150 each! I remember paying under $40 dollars for those in the past. Fun to see someone else that appreciates these cars (and is knowledgeable about them!). I recall mine was about $3500 new at Prince Chrysler Plymouth. they’re long gone. It’s always garaged and maintained, it’s going to be a lifetime car for me. It keeps up with traffic and tha air conditioning is super cold!

Nice story and nicer car, Tom! This one takes me back: my Dad went out for a haircut one Saturday in March ‘69 and came home with a new ‘69 Polara 2 door - Y3 cream, black vinyl roof and interior - Mom and I called it the Andrea Doria. Learned to drive on that car and I can tell you that a 383 2bbl can take a ‘69 Bonneville with a 455!

Just look what Plymouth's up to now!! Judy made a great choice in 1969 and this story gave me a smile as wide as this Fury's grille. 😁😁😁😁 Talk about an authentic Washington experience, did anyone else notice the dealer was wearing a rain coat as he handed over the keys to this new convertible?😂😂

My first car when I was 15, was a 69 fury III convertible.383-2brl. 292 diff gears. Ice blue, white top. Would have been nice to have A31 package.
(3.91 gears with sure grip and better springs)
Still a fantastic car. Top end speeds we're crazy. 120-130 id guess. The speedo started to get a shaky needle above 85. Gas was . 56¢ a gallon. I remember filling up from about empty for $14 dollars. Thanks for showing us this beauty

That sir is a beautiful car and survivor with a story to tell and you nailed it. I love 69 and 70 furys. Hardtop sport furys just do it for me. They float down the road and yet can haul the mail too. My 70 sport fury still sits here with no one to love it. Told my son It may become furyosa and put teeth in the missing grill and make it a field car lol. Not the fate I wanted for a numbers matching car. But better than a demo car. Good work Tom ❤

Thats a beautiful car. Back in the '80's we sacrificed a '69 Fury for parts on my '57 D100. It was a high mileage, bare bones car. Cut off the frame around the front axle center line. The '69 Fury front clip slid over the outside '57 frame. Welded in the torsion bar cross member. Relocated the spring perches on the 8 3/4 axle. We didn't expect that the Fury had significant engine set back, compared to the straight axle and V8. Cut out 3/4's of the firewall. Used most of the Fury wiring harness. 40 years later, realize a Dakota chassis would be a better swap because of track width. Currently going back through the truck. 4 wheel drum brakes are more than adequate. Not fond of the over powered steering, and brakes.

I’ve had four MoPars that were this shade of yellow. In 67 it was indeed called Daffodil yellow at Chrysler division.
The cars I’ve had were (in order) a 1972 Plymouth Scamp that had been repainted avocado green. The paint was peeling in areas so it was visible. The next one was a 1967 Chrysler Newport. Next was a 1969 Dodge Super Bee, and finally a 1968 Plymouth Fury III
Had I won the contest I’d have picked the Roadrunner (I was eight years old at the time) if I were to win the contest knowing what I know now I’d still pick a Roadrunner.

One thing I never liked, this is a 69 vehicle and after December of 68 they were supposed to have headrests - and the Chrysler headrests are cool looking compared to the other makes imo, but BUT I'll hazard the guess, most 69s seem to not have them. Every 69 GM and Ford had them whether required or not. Seems like Chrysler took the cheap way out and it looks it. I wouldn't want this car purely because it doesn't have headrests crazy as it sounds. Edit: great story though!

I'd have selected the A12 Road Runner!

That’s a good one but don’t think an A12 road runner would have been good at UW in 1969.
