Great stories and advice, Shawn. I've always called it Still Hunting. Moving through, looking for sign, stopping and listening... It feels natural and isn't boring. I've set up in natural cover on a trail a time or two but I've never hunted from a stand. I prefer to move like the game is moving. Like you said, the noises you make that way don't give you away like people may think. And even if you come up empty on game, the sights and sounds, the experience is a worthwhile harvest.

That was one of your best episodes yet. I, too, love to "talk" to big game. One time, I was driving slowly down a two-track jeep trail, and I happened to get between a mule deer doe on one side of the trail and her fawn on the other side of the trail. I stopped and turned off the engine. She was pretty uneasy at being separated from her fawn, and she started calling to it. So, being a bit playful at the time, I started giving fawn panic calls. OMG! She was looking all over for her fawn, but she couldn't see it because my Jeep was in the way. Finally, she came running up to the passenger side of my Jeep and looked inside the vehicle, thinking for sure that I had her fawn in there. I thought maybe she would jump in with me. Then she ran back a few feet and stomped. This went on for about five minutes, with her calling and me bleating back to her. Her fawn finally gathered enough courage to come around the front of the Jeep to his mother's side of the road. Do you think they simply ran off at that point? Oh, no! Mom walked up to her baby, and using her front feet, proceeded to give him a thrashing. Then, she looked over at me and calmly walked away into the quaking aspens, her fawn timidly following right behind her. You are right about observing wildlife. The more time you spend in the woods observing animals, the more you will know about them. Personally, I liked to hunt using tree stands, but however you choose to interact with wildlife is the right way for you to do it.

I learn something new from every one of your videos. Would love living off the grid as you are doing, but at 70, that isn’t practical for my husband and me. But, we do live in the center of our town, and our property borders right along with our city park, which is pretty densely populated with lots of deer and wild turkey. We have spotted a couple of mountain lions through the years, but rarely. Of course, in town, it’s not permitted to hunt, but if our world starts to go sour, well, that’s not going to stop us from using survival tactics. We have lived on our property for over 40 years now, so we are familiar with our wildlife activity. The deer don’t get culled out very often, so we see around 4-8 come through on their daily routine. We have been seeing around 15 turkeys come through in the mornings, but they get spooked easy if we are outside. The deer are so used to people being around, we could almost hand feed them. Thanks Shawn for your videos. I don’t watch any regular TV, but rather, pick and choose the content I want to watch. Yours are at the top of the list. ~Linda Wolff

Great job with the deer harvest! Just went out on the 11th to spend my first day in the hunting blind for bow season here in Iowa. I was fortunate enough to harvest a nice sized buck after only spending 45 minutes in the woods. Being able to call by mouth is a great skill to have. Thank you for letting us hear what those deer and turkey calls sound like, and telling us what makes that sound. For a city-dweller taking an occasional walk in the woods, recognising what animal or bird that sound might be is one of the more difficult but interesting things.
With my limited eyesight I seldom get a good look at whatever is calling, but being able to recognise the calls still makes me feel like I encountered that bird on my walk.

But being “in-tune” with nature year round, not just hunting season, gives lots of opportunity. Today I decided to cut firewood after work rather than go out to my tree stand and took my gun with me. After cutting wood I headed back towards the house and looked up on my property and saw three does. I shot two and have been working on processing all evening. Had to drop in to say thank you. Many many years ago, a friend's mother developed a heart condition. She still wanted to go hunt on the family's annual outing. She had them find a small clearing for her and there was a stump for her to sit on. They built her a small fire to keep warm. She sat there with her rifle across her knees, cracking peanuts and eating them. A big buck was curious about the noise and came across the clearing. She was the only one to get her deer that day. She did that every year after that until her health went down hill. An amazing woman. Smart, kind, funny, and generous. Her daughter was also quite the pistol.

Goodmorning, I completely understand what you have explained. I used to get Birds to come right up to a tree or window when I was home. Down here when I was in an Apartment I had a Blackbird that I called right to a tree that was at my bedroom window. We got so comfortable talking to each other he started coming at five o'clock in the morning and would call and call until I answered. I never allowed him to see me and he would get so frustrated he keep looking around get down on the ground and search. When he could not find where whatever it was he would ruff up his feathers, flap his wings and start a string of angry calls which I would give right back to him. It would go on for a few minutes then he would fly away. Then one day he started doing a whole new set of calls, at first I ignored them and then I tried them and he got excited but answered back with one of our favourite calls. Then he went back to the new call. I felt like he was teaching me and it turned out he taught me a lot of new calls. Everyday we spent time call out to each other. Then I moved and I often wonder what he probably felt like when no one answered. The neighbours could not believe what we did. Do yes nature is wonderfully amazing. There are some things in nature I am terribly afraid of. I have been walking in the woods and suddenly a whole lot of turkeys would appear. Once a Bear crossed in front of me not too close . I stayed calm and did not make eye contact I knew he was watching from a distance. I do not go on hikes anymore as I cannot walk any distance. I enjoy your Videos so much. I love the Forest there but am very nervous about the Jungle here. There Monkeys in the yard most days and lots of beautiful birds. There have been Wild Hogs and many other animals. Glad you can enjoy Nature so much Creation is something to treasure. Have a wonderful week.

Everyone has faults but yours are not evident. Such a pleasure to watch and listen
to your videos. Thank you for the nth time again. And what a great distraction from
the world outside of your place in nature. Hope that makes sense.

Shawn, You create a flashback.... 50 years... Think I've said before, summers with my uncle Fred in the country, eyeopener for a city boy aged 10. When accompanying him one day doing his groundsman/gamekeeper duties, we saw a squirrel in the veg patch. We were near the shed. Expletives squirrel says he, peas.. beans hands me a .22 rifle and says go get 'im Stephen!! WOT! I went after him, but he knew what was coming. I was as noisy as a bull in a bush. We ended up in an open field adjacent to the garden with ancient oaks. Boy, once on the bark he was in his element. I shot, but he dodged like a running back and quick as a flash. No squirrel for me that day. Nowadays, I approach the game dealer with a broad smile so as not to spook him. I compliment his produce, make small talk and stroke his fur! When he says cash or card, I say cash and he relaxes and comes up with the goods. I say credit...... and he's gone like mist in the wind! Urban hunting techniques. It's good to share. Regards Stephen.

Excellent Advice for hunting Shawn! I have used these methods before with good results. I have been watching deer when someone else in the area has taken a shot at something and the report of the shot only caused the deer to look up and face that direction for about a minute, then they went back to feeding. Stalking is about knowing your prey and using that knowledge to your advantage. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

When colder weather comes and snowshoe hares 🐰🐰🐰 have changed to their winter coats you could test high pitched calls to squeak them up. If you ever harvest one, you should make rabbit stew with gravy, mashed potatoes and carrots 🍲🥔🥕 … and trade the fur for winter supplies. That's how natives balanced their lives 200 years ago. Living off the land without destroying it.

I too was taught to be still once I spotted a deer. I wasn't supposed to move until they were almost out of sight. Then drop back , do a wide circle to get up in front. I was a young girl and shortly after, the opportunity to hunt deer was not available any longer.

Your doe bleat sounds way better than the one I carry! I need to practice with my mouth more so I have to carry less stuff. I can really only do a buck grunt. Great video. I love hearing your hunting stories too. Congratulations on getting that deer. I'm still working on getting mine this year.

Pretty cool you were able to go harvest a deer that way. Your calling btw sounds fantastic. I've seen first hand how curious animals can be... One time I took a battery and 2 signal flashers and set up a pair of amber lights on them to use at the edge of a lake as a marker. They are doing there thing and we hear a large crack we get freaked out and wait we end up seeing a young bull moose checking this contraption out. we figure it was the clicking of the pair of flashers that brought it in. Cool video and thank you for the explanation it makes perfect sense.

The variations by the age and gender of the deer was enlightening and your turkey call would of had me looking for the fowl. Well done sir!
