See when you are 12, songs like this just go over your head, you are full of T. Rex, slade and other stuff, but see when you are 63, this is just pure quality, what an arrangement, brass section and choir
    What a man, RIP

So true but I never particularly liked slade although they were massively popular. Also now I like some Abba but of course it was untrendy back in the day..I also like a lot of classical piano and concerti. When younger i would NEVER listen to it

My husband died a few months ago, we had been married for nearly 57 years. Most of the time I want to get on with life and be positive but just sometimes I want to remember times long ago and have a good howl.......and when I do I play Peter singing 'You're a Lady' and it lets me remember the way things used to be. Peter was a very special performer, very gifted and very fondly remembered. He had a unique style that we all recognised because it spoke our inner thoughts.

I was 16 years old. A new math and physics teacher arrived at the school during the spring days. Carmen was her name, she was very young, she was about 24 years old, very beautiful and sensual. I fell madly in love with her as much as she seemed to me too. Approximately 2 years later she dies due to illness. Now I´m 61 years old, no one can imagine how much I still miss her.

Skellern, absolute musical genius. The rest of the world was getting off on glam, glitter and distortion in the early '70s; Peter sat at his grand piano delivering harmonic progressions, the complexity and niceness of which Bach would've been proud, to the backdrop of brass bands and angelic choirs. This song, this performance moves me. Magic.

I was 9 when this came onto the radio. Although I didn’t understand what love was about yet, I loved the tune and the gentle lyrics. A year later I lost my innocence, and I realise that this song, in part, symbolises my childhood perhaps more than any other. Now I’m 60, and having come out of a largely unhappy 31-year marriage, I am finally experiencing true love like I never thought existed. This is the soundtrack of my innocent romantic longings.

This is one of the early 70s classics that stand to shoulder with the likes of Gilbert O’Sullivan’s Nothing Rhymed and Alone Again Naturally, Nilsson’s Without You and Lynsey De Paul’s Won’t Somebody Dance With Me to name but a few all still burning bright over fifty years later.

They don't write music or songs like this any more, quite simply exquisite, can only think of these words to sum the time of music like this, 'Golden days spent in the sunshine of our happy youth'

I was 8 when this song came out, I always remember long Sundays and the smell of warm drying washing and this song in a dimly lit sitting room. The ending caught my ear and I have never forgotten this song through my life, now 60. It was my private song, for my memory. Thank you Peter.

I loved this touching song from the first time I heard it !!!
I was 17 years old at that time in 1972. "You're a lady" was played a lot on Radio Luxembourg.
Today I'm 65 and this beautiful song still touches me a lot !!!
It is so sad that Peter Skellern passed away in 2017. But he lives on in his beautiful songs 😢💓

Absolutely terrific, I'd forgotten how good this was. The understated performance and the gentle humour with Skellern's wonderful voice is just great. I've recently been listening to his recording of 'Love is the Sweetest Thing' which makes Al Bowlly's version, from one of the greatest crooners ever, sound like he's belting it out in a music hall.
It's a nice video that shows the man himself and his performing style, I assume it's mimed to the record as there's no microphones on the piano, the wide shot would show any boom mics, and it definitely looks like a hand-painted white piano from the props dept rather than a concert Steinway, I'm not even certain that the hammers were moving when you could see inside. But that's not the point, just amusing to see and it appeals to my nerdy observer's mind.

Fantastic songs don't need flashy music videos. Just a guy and a piano. Miss the good old days of TopPop with Ad Visser and Penny de Jager.
