See when you are 12, songs like this just go over your head, you are full of T. Rex, slade and other stuff, but see when you are 63, this is just pure quality, what an arrangement, brass section and choir What a man, RIP
So true but I never particularly liked slade although they were massively popular. Also now I like some Abba but of course it was untrendy back in the day..I also like a lot of classical piano and concerti. When younger i would NEVER listen to it
My husband died a few months ago, we had been married for nearly 57 years. Most of the time I want to get on with life and be positive but just sometimes I want to remember times long ago and have a good howl.......and when I do I play Peter singing 'You're a Lady' and it lets me remember the way things used to be. Peter was a very special performer, very gifted and very fondly remembered. He had a unique style that we all recognised because it spoke our inner thoughts.
I don't think any long term spouse wishes to leave his/her partner alone. We rarely get to choose. We'd wish to leave together, holding hands. Meanwhile we can love and appreciate each other.
Diana Stirling diana remember this is were you will both exist and be together again in your memories, they arent just thoughts in our head they are passages of time where he still exists.x
You are so right my friend,I get so sad and tearful when I hear this beautiful song ,I was 14 years old on first hearing this, and it sounds so much better 50 years later,a bit sad but really wonderful.
Remember this while in the kitchen on a Sunday, helping my Mum with lunch - reminds me of my younger days, when everything seemed all OK - now grown up, the world certainly isn’t the same place!
I was 16 years old. A new math and physics teacher arrived at the school during the spring days. Carmen was her name, she was very young, she was about 24 years old, very beautiful and sensual. I fell madly in love with her as much as she seemed to me too. Approximately 2 years later she dies due to illness. Now I´m 61 years old, no one can imagine how much I still miss her.
Skellern, absolute musical genius. The rest of the world was getting off on glam, glitter and distortion in the early '70s; Peter sat at his grand piano delivering harmonic progressions, the complexity and niceness of which Bach would've been proud, to the backdrop of brass bands and angelic choirs. This song, this performance moves me. Magic.
Major nostalgia moment. What an amazing song ... who would have thought a man on a piano with a brass band in the background and a ladies choir the background could pull it off and then some .. heart achingly good and still brings tears to my eyes. Bless you Peter Skeller .
Loved this song since I heard it as a young boy, I'm nearly 66, and this is just so beautiful, like my wife, soulmate, best friend😊 and rock, Sarah ❤❤❤
Brilliant song by a brilliant songwriter,I was 14 when this song was a hit, never thought much of it ,now I am older and wiser it's a brilliant song and a brilliant piece of music, and Peter Skellern was a master musician,RIP Mr Skellern.
I was 9 when this came onto the radio. Although I didn’t understand what love was about yet, I loved the tune and the gentle lyrics. A year later I lost my innocence, and I realise that this song, in part, symbolises my childhood perhaps more than any other. Now I’m 60, and having come out of a largely unhappy 31-year marriage, I am finally experiencing true love like I never thought existed. This is the soundtrack of my innocent romantic longings.
This song always fills my eyes with tears. Peter Skellern was a genius. Makes me feel very proud to be born in the same country as the brilliant Peter Skellern. I do pray to to our dear Lord God, that someone in the near future will again to start to write songs like this again.
RML Bobby D sounds good. I would love to hear your songs. Do you have any info or links I could use to hear some of your songs? I sing with my sister - she plays guitar and flute. We have also written some original songs with a unique sound. My influences are 60s and 70s.
@@MrDavey2010 I keep going back to the well of this great man,s repertoire. No words can really do justice .... just and totally brilliant. Ballards that speak to the heart. Just so sad he,s left us
I love the use of the words hauntingly romantic....this song is terribly haunting. This song defines what I feel romance should be. I am crazy about this song.....🥰
What a brilliant song. The piano and lyrics are masterful.. And the use of the choir in the arrangement is clever. But what really makes the song so memorable is the outro with the choir and piano.
I was 9 years old in 1972 and mad about the Osmonds but I loved this song and I continued to listen to it it all through my teens and beyond. Peter Skellern's granddaughter emailed Johnnie Walker (sounds of the 70s) a little while ago to ask for this song to be played in honour of her granddad which I thought was very sweet.
Just heard this song in an old aircheck posted on FaceBook. I hadn't heard it in 50 years, and it brought back so many memories of 1972. Beautiful ballad, Peter has that same wistful voice as Gilbert O'Sullivan, another very talented pianist and songsmith. Thanks for posting.
A comforting man with his lyrics, someone who really stood out in those days but yet with comparatively simple music. There’s never being anyone to replace him, and there won’t be, because he was unique. Thank you mate, I loved your style and your comforting words.
Like everyone who lived back then and was younger and thought these songs were slush , but with age and having loved and lost you appreciate just how good this guy was . The knowledge That this love song was probably written after a certain experience Peter had at the time. Great song and very distinctive style.👍🏻
I'm 82, this song has been a favorite of mine for many a year touching the heartstrings. My wife died 2 years ago but before she passed she told me to get on with my life and hoped I would find a partner. Two years on a beautiful lady has come into my life. What a song, what musician what dreams are spun.
You just wouldn't get a song like this making the top ten these days. Back in the seventies, you could get anyone from a punk rocker to a brass band having a big hit.
Oh dear, I was 15 years old when I heard this song for first time, it became of of my favorite songs of all the time, myself I considered this one of the Top 10 most beautiful romantic songs ever made, thanks a lot for the memories
I used to listen to this beautiful song with a dear friend of mine who sadly had type 1 diabetes and was never going to live into old age. Thank you, Richard.
When I was 16 years old, in 1974, I met a girl briefly, we danced together just once, and then we kissed intensely just once ... we didn't say a word to each other, it was all about our eyes ... it was love at first sight for me ... but we never saw each other again after that short moment and I don't even know her name ... but I've never forgotten her to this day, I`ve not forgotten what she looked like, how she smelled and how everything felt and when I think of her, tears come to my eyes ... I'm 66 now.

Absolutely terrific, I'd forgotten how good this was. The understated performance and the gentle humour with Skellern's wonderful voice is just great. I've recently been listening to his recording of 'Love is the Sweetest Thing' which makes Al Bowlly's version, from one of the greatest crooners ever, sound like he's belting it out in a music hall. It's a nice video that shows the man himself and his performing style, I assume it's mimed to the record as there's no microphones on the piano, the wide shot would show any boom mics, and it definitely looks like a hand-painted white piano from the props dept rather than a concert Steinway, I'm not even certain that the hammers were moving when you could see inside. But that's not the point, just amusing to see and it appeals to my nerdy observer's mind.

A Legendary song….most probably one of the best ever
Unquestionably true.
So true.
Think Peter was born in the wrong decade with his love for the old songs. An extremely, underrated singer and pianist.
Not sure about his singing ...
Peter was a real gem, rip fair fellow
Peter Skellern - VASTLY underated.|
Overrated and they let him become a priest.
Absolutely wonderful. One of the best songs ever written and only Peter could have sung it. Tearful.
Colin Bluntstone would have sung this brilliantly.

Thank you, Mr. Skellern.
Always loved the beautiful arrangement of this mellow, classic song. It has ‘everything’ 😊
Oh for a romance like this. This song makes me melt...
What a brilliant song. The piano and lyrics are masterful.. And the use of the choir in the arrangement is clever. But what really makes the song so memorable is the outro with the choir and piano.
