John and Jeremy, I really like your ratings for tone/sound and playability. I need a neck I can play. As for looks, I like the thin satin/ flat finish AND visible side fret markers. Iris Guitars do this, as others. Thanks.
Played a few Atkin guitars in England earlier this year, they are cheaper in North America than if you buy them in England. Great tone and volume. Personally I’m partial to Boucher but these are very good.
A lot of players are obsessed with details of construction. I say play it, decide if you like what you're hearing and also the feel of the guitar, compare it to others and just buy the one that you think sounds the best. Who cares if it's got a torrefied top, adirondack top, bone bridge pins and so on? Decide by using your ears, not reading a specification list!
First heard this guitar in the shootout with the other D18 style guitars you did. As soon as you started playing it, I was like yup, that's the best one!
This is great. I am so excited because the SBS Eastman E1 OM TC is expected this week. I know my 95-year-old piano player friend will love it. She's LEARNING guitar. Plays her daughter's GS Mini when available. Yes, I will play along as she learns. Just such a great present. And it's my youngest son's birthday.
I find that I prefer a non-torrified top; I like playing the instrument open myself. That said, I understand why someone would prefer a baked top. This instrument looks and sounds very nice; it strikes me as quite a reasonable price for what it is.
Nothing wrong with that, but the torrefaction does require further breaking in too over the first year. The thing is. It provides a cellular structure of that of 80 year old wood. I have a pre war guitar co guitar that sounded great as soon as I got it. After a year of hard playing, it’s gotten that much better. It sounds so close to an old 30s D18, but the finish is also considerably aged but the torrefied top makes a difference with time and is best paired with aged finish, which Atkin sort of does too
Not much. Pre war Martins used Sitka bracing. I’ve never noticed a guitar with similar tone woods that had adi or Sitka bracing to be a factor in volume or tone.
if you had to choose, getting the yamaha fg3 as your "main" guitar and getting say... a baby martin (lx1re i think) as a travel guitar or instead just getting a fg5? is it worth giving up the baby martin or not?
There's no comparison between a baby Martin to an fg3 or 5 , the Yamaha red labels rival a Martin d18 , if it's a small body guitar your after at a budget price check out the Yamaha fs3 , hope this helps 👍
@@gavincarrollmusic7401i think you misunderstood my question, i meant, if i have to choose between getting a baby martin, and a fg3. or alternatively just get the fg5, my question is whether the upgrade from the fg3 to 5 is worth giving up the baby martin i could buy in that gap... as far as i can see on the specs, their extremely similar... all id do is just switch to bone nut and saddle and its almost the same guitar...
Again, you didn't talk about the build details such as top bracing material (wood type), bracing thickness, bracing placement, type of scalloping, binding material/color, neck profile, .. bridge pin material.
@@pmscalisi I didn’t even know it had a bolt on neck until I got one home. I care about the sound and Atkin has it. Specs are an afterthought. They should probably do a quick screenshot of specs to pause on for the people who care and aren’t going to buy one anyway. If you’re asking about glue, you’re not buying. If you are, glue is the wrong reason to buy one. “Cannon” and “old Martin sound” should be why you buy one.

John, you did not mention the inner construction of this expensive guitar. The bracings, glue used, wood used. I would not buy this guitar. Too expensive. I can buy 3 Eastman's E10's, a good Guild D-40 traditional made here in Oxnard California and or Gibson hummingbird, Martin D-18 and still have money left over! As
Good to see Made in England on something in 2023. Thanks.

Nice to know that 4,200.00 isn't considered crazy expensive. Jfc
I’ve played this guitar at your shop, I was blown away. It was the biggest sounding guitar I’ve played.
Totally!
Glad to see the mustache is back
It's like it never left
That's really essential...

They're cheaper in the UK than America bud.
What mics are you using?
Ebony headplate? Looks like rosewood to me..
According to Atkin it is Ebony, looks like it's just a unique piece!

Is it built with Hide Glue? Holds Initially Delaminates Eventually. Will it be louder as it is played more?
Any chance you've ever heard of Aitken Guitar Works?
Just picked up one of these in the January sales. It’s a cannon!

Are all the Essential Ds this same color? And are the neck and body (color)
usually matched up better? Thanks, EE
We believe they all should be around that same color, we did just get in an essential where the neck and body finishes match up very well!
Thank you.
Can you imagine the horse power that thing would have with Adirondack braces, and top. I definitely would buy one.
Not much.

Do they make a cut away
How much ??

The Zager is a better value.

Most don’t gaf about that stuff, just us guitar geeks 😂 they’re just trying to sell instruments

Haha. Worried about the inner workings and then say you’d buy 3 Eastmans. You’re trying to compare mass produced guitars to boutique.
@@BulldoggerJK that's so stupid! Martin guitars are mass produced dumb ass!!
@@BulldoggerJK they are not boutique.
only the martin 18 comes close but i agree
10 employees making 300 guitars a year isn’t boutique? Ok. Stick with Eastman.
