    Not sure why I kept saying lever cap instead of lateral adjuster!

    Stanley changed it because when carpenters were paid by what amount of work they did, when adjusting on the fly the level cap would ride up and they would have to stop and set up the plane all over again , which took time and money.

    Bought the luban/woodriver/quansheng/dictum rebate blockplane, adjustable mouth version, at dictum.
    The edges are little bit sharp.
    A file and some 1000 grid sandpaper will remove it.
    The mouth had some small burs.
    Again same sandpaper
    The blade isn't very sharp. So use their free sharpening service when you order any dictum brand planes/scissels.
    The blade is 99,9%straight.
    Yep,same sandpaper
    My extra blade (±12 euro) is sharpened to 30 degrees (max) and extremely sharp, used their free service on this one. That's how I know the difference.
    The sole is 99.95% flat
    It has some very minor dents 2cm behind the mouth. These dents are on both sides and 1,5cm long 6mm wide and 0,01mm deep.
    It's about 730gr, 20cm long 5cm wide.
    This little beauty costs just under 80 euro.

    I have this plane and some other Luban planes, I am very impressed with them for their "cheaper" price and build quality. Some people have issues with it being made by a chinese brand, but just because it's made in China doesn't mean it's crap. I think they are definitely worth while if you don't want to spend a fortune on Lie-Nielsen or Veritas.

      if it wasn't crap- it wouldn't copy the exact design and features.

      @@MrSeminole77 Lie Nielsen copy the bedrock design of the Stanley, does that mean they are crap???

    This really needs a follow-up review of you using it. Great video by the way

      Cheers,
      I've used it a fair few times since, the weight of it is much heavier than a stanley, however, this is a double edged sword. It doesn't half keep going and leave a beautiful cut behind once you get it going, but it also tires you out quickly, and I work out regularly.
      I don't actually need this kind of plane all of the time, but when I have something bigger that I want flat I've gone to this and it delivers great results. I quite like setting the mouth fairly tight and using my 22" wooden jointer to hog off material prior to coming in with this plane to finish jointing a side and ensuring it's square and truly flat.
      For jointing boards together, this thing excels, it's given me seamless boards on 2 oak table tops (albeit very thin 2cm thick table tops, so not necessarily difficult to achieve.)

      Should use an engineer square really, just a thought 🤔

    That's why you see so many leaver cap's brocken, specially on old Stanley plane's using them for undoing the chip breaker from the blade.

    The adjuster on the back is called the lateral adjuster👌

    Yes the lateral adjuster is a bit of a let down look wise .

    I am not saying this to be funny but using the lever cap to undo the chip breaker off the blade is not a good idea , that's why you see many Stanley plane's with broken lever cap's, nice plane you have there, Happy New year from a old vintage carpenter.

      @JoshIbbotson  Рік тому

      Happy new year! You're entirely correct, however I'd argue that convenience of not needing to grab a screwdriver would out weigh that potential of breaking the lever cap, but that's just personally for me, I'd rather have the option... but perhaps having the option is all it takes to eventually make the fatal error of breaking the lever cap mmm

    Luban makes fantastic planes, but of course, we don't know how much these workers are paid in China.

  • @MrSeminole77
    @MrSeminole77 Рік тому

    Congratulations. You have stimulated the Chinese "copy cat" mfg business model. The fact that these have very low resale value is a testament to quality. Buy American and benefit the American economy. Luban is a cheap knockoff. If it wasn't, it wouldn't copy the design features!

    • @JoshIbbotson
      @JoshIbbotson  Рік тому +3

      Nah it does the job well. The fact that their resale value might not be high speaks more to the demand of these planes and not their quality, but with that being said a quick check on eBay and their resale value seems fine? Perhaps if I was American I'd be more interested in 'benefiting' the American economy. There seems to be subtle differences to the lie nielson too, therefore not a direct copy. Ultimately you could say the same about lie nielson copying the stanley design, where would you draw the line.
      Ultimately I see your point though, i'm not unaware of what's going on in china, but this is simply a by product of capitalism, value for money.
