Why Do Plasma Cutters Consumables Come In Different Lengths?

  • Many of my subscribers have asked me about plasma torch consumables, especially when replacing plasma cutting consumables which come in a variety of sizes and materials. Basically, the common consumables we have today, particularly the PT 31 plasma torch consumables or LG 30 plasma torch consumables are made of copper and nickel for heat resistance. However, they come in two different sizes which I call the short and long consumables.
So what our friends out there are concerned about is which of these two types and sizes of consumables must be chosen when cutting metals and also what clues to watch out for to give you the hint in replacing plasma cutting consumables.
In my previous videos, I have taught the importance of choosing the right plasma torch consumables and how to use them to prolong their life. But in this video, I’m going to demonstrate which to choose when cutting metals with your torch.
Incidentally, there’s no difference if we choose the nickel-plated PT 31 - LG 40 plasma consumables or the PT 31 plasma torch consumables made of copper in terms of cutting efficiency. The important thing to remember is not to mix them up like using the short along with the long consumables. So if we’re using the short electrode, it must be used with the short cutting tip while the swirl ring and the ceramic cap remain the same as with the long consumables. So matching size does matter when it comes to restocking your torch with the consumables
Needless to say, even if we mixed up the short nickel-plated PT 31 - LG 40 plasma consumables along with the short copper plasma torch consumables, as long as these are both short, this won’t affect the cutting capacity of your torch. The same goes with the long consumables so there’s no issue when using 2 different types of consumables as long as they are of the same size.
However, in my opinion, the nickel-plated PT 31 - LG 40 plasma consumables are more durable than the copper plasma torch consumables. Incidentally, even by weight alone, feel and structure, the nickel consumables seem to outlast the copper made. On the other hand, you’ll know when to replace plasma cutting consumables when they begin to crack, deformed or burned out.
Now the other concern that some of our viewers are asking about is the difference between the short and the long consumables and when to use them. Again, in my experience, the shorter plasma torch consumables are better used when dragging your torch on a wider surface line which the PT 31 and LG 40 which are both non-pilot arcs are good at. But when it comes to cutting corners like when cutting sheet metal and you want to cut a sharp angle, the long consumables are my better preference.
So if you want to know more about the PT 31 and the LG 40 consumables, this video will tell more about them.

I might be a bit late to the party on this one but long tips are better to run along a straight edge or template to keep the torch straight.
Keep up the great videos. Cheers.

Nice one Pete, didn't know you can turn over the electrode to use the other side.

Some cutting tips have a cross grooved into the point and some don't. What is the difference? For a long time I thought that was the difference between the drag tip and the standoff tip??

I don't know what the groove are for some have it and some don't.

mine have that...I drag a lot on thin stuff, the grooves help with a place for blow back to go when punching through.

@@petestools I think I heard or read that it's for the air flow and I think the groves are on the flat wider tip ones that are more for flat cutting, and the pointier ones are for the hard to get corner areas like Pete was saying the longer tips are for. Also for holding close or dragging with less flash.
That's my very limited understanding of it anyway...

Pete do you know if the cutting tip for the AG60 non pilot arc torch are the same as the AG60 pilot arc cutting tips ? Thanks

My plasma cutter is pulsating. Even when I replace the consumables it still does the same thing.

mine use to do that...there is a spark gap in the machine (which on mine was too close) it keep jumping here instead of on the work piece.
