My first ride on a VESC onewheel.. Did I finally turn to the dark side?

  • I've been very comfortable on my FM machines for a couple of years now and I really like the option to be able to switch riding modes on the fly. But since the update of FM I haven't been able to use my onewheel app at all. So gone are the days of easily changing riding modes. About time for a change that will allow me a lot more flexibility.. my first ride on a VESC onewheel. Did I finally turn to the dark side?

    Don’t know if someone told you but surf dado has some amazing videos on setting up vesc and using his app. Best way to learn in my opinion, also if it’s any consolation, I’m 158 miles into my first vesc (Thor 300) and I set it up with surfdados videos and have had only one problem which was the footpad sensor lol but I posi’d it and haven’t had any cutouts or nosedives since! And I ride pretty aggressively through trails, regularly hitting 90+ duty cycle but knowing when I’m spiking into that range I think has kept me from going down. Good luck, welcome to vesc :)

      Thanks for the heads up mate! Surfdado’s videos are definitely helpful in setting up and understanding the vesc stuff. Cutouts have been fixed and learning every day. 🤙

      The Hoosier treaded tire definitely helps in these muddy conditions. Gotta keep that VESC power in check in the muddy patches though. The extra torque gets tends to spin that tire even harder.

      @@Floating_Jaffa that would be the duduteduntun sound. There's also a high pitch tone coming from the motor or controller.. It's really loud on my machine.

    • @aeraglyx
      @aeraglyx 8 місяців тому +1

      @@VinieVizzleVlog That could be the Zero Vector Frequency, if you have the Vesc Tool app, it's a setting in Motor Cfg > FOC > Advanced (if I remember correctly). It's usually around 25-30 kHz, higher values can reduce that high pitch sound, but above let's say 35 it can get dangerous, so best to stay below 30. On my floatwheel, even changing from 28 to 29 makes a big difference.

    Great vid Vinie! I’ve been enjoying the latest GT update, but the idea of VESCing my board and unlocking more potential is super intriguing. As you said, all of the little details and tweaks you can make are awesome, but at the same time making the wrong adjustment and getting thrown off puts me off a bit 😅
    I’m sure I’ll eventually make my way over to the dark side haha
    Keep shredding, my friend! 🤙🏻

      I can fully relate to that! I’ve always been an observer. Once I’ve gathered enough information about something new the curiosity takes over and I go for it. My curiosity got the upper hand so I’m finally comfortable enough to start fiddling around with these VESC machines. Stoked about this new chapter! 🤙

  • @xsh4n400
    @xsh4n400 8 місяців тому +1

    95% should be the theoretical max before nosedive. Note that spikes in duty cycle will be called out. so if you hit a root and the board briefly uses max power that will be recorded as 95%. To gain a better picture, I recommend turning your phone on, recording your screen, and then slowly and evenly speeding up. When you’re done, you can review your screen recording to figure out what duty cycle, you are at various cruising speeds.
    Also, consider enabling haptic buzz if you want real time alerts of you being above 80% (the actual percentage is configurable, of course) duty cycle. The feedback from buzz is instant, unlike the vocalized alerts. That should also give you a sense of if your duty cycle alarms are for spikes or sustained output. The haptic buzz could last as short as half a second for a spike, so it is very informative and instant feedback.
    I do find that my VESC is more power hungry than a FM board. My Pint X, which should get 16 miles on a stock battery, gets only 12-13, even if riding conservatively. Also, I actually max out my speed sooner - 16-17mph (27km) rather than 19-20 (32km). So investing in a good battery is more important. The low-end torque is much higher than an FM board, though!
    Congrats on the VESC! I love mine more and more each time I ride it, and I can’t go back to FM!

    • @VinieVizzleVlog
      @VinieVizzleVlog  8 місяців тому

      Thanks for the extensive explanation! Already was able to tweak some settings that give me some more wiggle room. The screen recording seems like a good way to get an idea of the stats. Trying to look at your phone while touching the limits is a dangerous situation 😅 I’ll definitely give that a try to see where I’m at currently. 🤙

    Duty cycle 95 is the max you can get before nose diving. So something must be wrong with your setup when you get 97 and your still riding

    • @VinieVizzleVlog
      @VinieVizzleVlog  8 місяців тому +1

      I guess I was lucky to ride it out. I am maxing out on 42km/h on a stock XR without having nosedives so hitting that duty cycle at 30 really surprised me.

    • @nicoaleman
      @nicoaleman 7 місяців тому +1

      Not sure who set up his board, but they probably raised the max Duty Cycle to 96 or 97%, have seen a couple guys out there do that

    • @VinieVizzleVlog
      @VinieVizzleVlog  7 місяців тому

      @nicoaleman thanks for clarifying that Nico. Hit that 97% on a straight line without bonks or drop while gradually speeding up. ERPM value was set around 11000. Have increased it to 100000 now and I have more wiggle room while gradually accelerating but still have the peaks while playing. Feels a lot safer now.

      @VinieVizzleVlog Duty Cycle can spike around a lot at the top end, especially under torque at speed like offroad or if you jam on the nose quickly. Alerts like that are probably from quick spikes, or from free spin off bonks and what not
