This book changed my compin' forever. Night and day. I've already mentioned Barry Galbraith in a past video, there are few guitarists out there who had such an illustrious career AND taught at this level. That said, you also had Milt Hinton playing bass on these tracks. Milt was a bassist's bassist. A walking history book, quite the photographer. And, he was funky as all hell when he turned it on. I never thought about using this book to practice compin' for myself--that's an EXCELLENT IDEA! Thank you! Another thing. The voice leading and arrangement of the harmony is great to study, but don't forget the rhythm and feel. Galbraith played really dry on the example track, so you can hear every little detail of how he articulated each rhythm. He swings his arse off without anything but a naked guitar tone--easier said than done. The way accents are used, how chords end, dynamics, all that. I'm really into the subtleties these days cause my mentor makes me pay attention to them in any transcription I do. Your lines are deceptively simple. In ideas, yes--they are simple. But the way you dig in and make them pop, that's a challenge. I think that's why your lines sound great here. That's why Wes sounds like Wes, Grant Green sounds like Grant Green, and I sound like an amatuer :)

One of the first jazz books I worked from... Years later I dj’d “Shiny" over and over again for Frankie Manning teaching a Lindy workshop. Great book. Legendary man.

The Barry Galbraith comping book was always one of the main books we were into, not old-fashioned at all. I use the blues chords all the time. Thanks for providing a much-needed demonstration. I started with the F blues. It really made my playing instantly sound "jazz," because I came from a rock/country background.

Thank you ! I find working on comping difficult without playing it on "real tune". I have never been able to learn a bunch a now chords you can find in some methods. I find the Aebersold Vol. 54 Maiden Voyage Guitar Voicings interesting as the Galbraiths is.

Fantastic lesson as always! I especially enjoyed the part where you discussed how to add the comping when improvising melodic lines. This book was recommended to me by a teacher a few years back, but haven't really gotten into it as much as I would like. So thanks for reigniting my interest. I've mastered about 4 of the tunes including the one you used to demonstrate, but didn't know how to really apply the ideas while soloing, so your tips were very helpful. Thanks!

Hi Mikko, I'm watching this video again (and I'm smiling as I write this!). I ordered this book in December, after having seen your video, got it a week after or so, brought it with me to Sweden (my country of birth) from Italy (where I live) during Chrismas, thinking I would have had sooo much time to plough it through. That didn't happen (but I practised a lot on other things). Anyway I opened it today and started to work on "Stockings" and it really is a great idea. I mean I know most of these voicing already, since years, but the idea to sit down and actually play along with the book and also use it to throw in chords while soloing, as you suggest, is really a great excerise and idea. Thanks! You're inspiring! And you have such a cozy and laid back way of transmitting your message, which is really nice. It should be fun and inspiring to play music! Thumbs up.

Another great choice for a video. Why not use the CD that comes with the book? Also those circled numbers tell you on which string to play the top note of a voicing. So Bb13#11 on bar 5 is played on the middle set of string and the shape is the same as the min9 on the top set.
I love the way you make the study yours by mixing single lines and chords.
For those interested in the melodic comping approach the series of books by David Bloom (melodic chords for guitar, major blues, minor blues) will teach you to think of the top note of a voicing and are a great companion to the Galbraith book.
    Thank you Mikko
