- Everyone's favorite flaming, huggable maiar of the underworld comes forth to take on Treebeard, the Ents, an army of Hobbits, and a rematch with Gandalf!

To be honest thins game was actually pretty good for its time. Thats just my personal opinion I think it's completely underrated and I think there should be another or a more up to date version.
To everyone who does not understand this: The evil campaign is a view if what might of happened if Frodo had not destroyed the ring
this battle sounds frakin' awesome!! but i don't remember seeing it in the movie.

You don't have to unlock them, but you can only play them at certain points during the game. Sauron, for example, can only be played at the end of the Rivendell and Shire missions. If I remember correctly, this is the only part in the game where you can play as the Balrog.
The Balrog shoulod have gotten more spotlight in the story. He's a beast.
Seems like a grand bit of overkill really. A balrog stooping to swing his sword at a hobbit. Just send the hordes to slaughter everything, and engage when your real target reveals himself. :)
Man that game really follows the LTR timeline, Balrogs were created and ended during the first age, except for a few. and the ones that did were very minor and weak Balrogs compared to some of the others
Basicly, the LOTR version of The Devil (I don't want to say his name.) Because he Tolkien said he was a fair and powerful Valar (angel) That turned evil. He almost destroyed Middle Earth. and destroyed Middle Earth V1 which was called Bereliand. In the end he was taken down by the other Valar. Morgoth was so evil, That he was SAURONS master.
and sauron. and the various other maia (like saruman before becoming evil, gandalf before and after the fall...)
Would be way more epic if gandalf was standing on the middle of the bridge not allowing the Balrog to pass.
Read again all the books. Durin's Bane was the last Balrog, and in fact Gandalf did not expect a Balrog to be still on the move at the time of frodo's quest. Moreover, of course Morgoth is Sauron's master, because Morgoth is the cause of all evil, but still, after Sauron created the ring, he became far more powerful than Morgoth. And that is not speculation.

Balrogs are more like free demons to me, because after Morgoth died this one (the only one left) had free will but still chose to be evil.

@Bythesw23 I know in the movie he looked like he was made of shadow with fire inside of the shadow. All the games turn him from a shadow demon to a fire demon just cause the flaming sword and whip.

Not implied. It IS Durin's Bane. The Orcs went to Moria and revived him through a ritual the Gondorians and Gimli were trying to put a stop to.

I think its in The Similarion where it says that when Morgorth was overthrown, some balrogs escaped by hiding in the deep places of the world. Presumably, the "evil" that the dwarfs awakened in Moria was a Balrog, and that it had been hiding there the whole time (I guess it was hibernating).

Unfortunately yes. If only the foes of Morgoth had erected three foot tall wooden fences around their cities and on the battlefields, then Morgoth's balrogs would have been completely helpless.

without his ring, sauron would be nothing compared to a balrog who has might on itself.
@Asgardt the balrogs where corrupted by evil and are hence more likely to be influenced by it, but still Saruman is not powerful enough to make it do his bidding, only Sauron could poissibly in his fullest form bend it to his will.

actually, there were 2 balrogs left i think. 1 in moria, and 1 in the orocarni (red mountains). but i am not sure

@CraftableMuffin He can fly, for good distances too. Unless you're talking about this game, then I don't know other than that'd look really dumb if he didn't have his wings. It makes him look more intimidating too.
When you get used to play online, the only thing that can match is playing on Legendary. This game doesn't catch the "Lord of the Rings" thing, but is the most awesome online game I've tried so far.

EA shut down the online servers due to the fact that people were not playing "Conquest" as much as other games, and decided it wasn't worth the expense of keeping it up, so I'm afraid you can't play the game online.
not exactly. sauron was already the most powerful maia of his time, and Barlogs ARE a kind of extremely powerful maia, though not that strong (the one killed by Gandalf was the LAST survivor). Sauron used his impressive power to forge the One Ring, becoming more powerful than Morgoth himself that was already the most powerful Vala.

Hmm, one of his lines in this game is "Saruman said: leave no Hobbits alive!'.. got me thinking. Set aside for a second that this game is obviously bullshit, could a Balrog hypothetically be in the employ of Saruman? They're both Maiar, but tbh I don't think a Balrog would answer to any spirit less powerful than the Valar themselves.. hmmm

It's a shame that this game didn't followed at all battlefront 2. The hero's in that game could spawn after they died but in this game you can only be an hero when you earn half of the points to win (if its 200 then 100) and if you get killed as an hero, bye bye. You can be a hero once per battle which is very frustating (even more when you're playing as Sauron and someone twice as small as you grabs you from behind and death), like being able to be Balrog only in 2 maps and Sauron in only 1 .
