I’m not a car owner, but I like a true double file restart. Single file with 5 laps or less. I grew up with this type of restart so I’m prejudice.

From a fan perspective, I like a true double file restart. I like the leader having to fight for his lead. Just my opinion.

Delaware easier to determine a jump. Better black and white calls. Plus not always an advantage on the first lap. How many times coming back line second place is on the bumper.

I’m old enough to remember single file, with the lap cars in between. Wherever they were is were they restarted. They didn’t go to the back. Example. If there is 2 lap cars between 1st & 2nd. They stay there. Wasn’t until the 90’s that started to go away.

used to be single file after the initial start & a lot less stuff got tore up which is cool.also fun to get ten spots on a restart

I belive the Delaware gives the leader the advantage (usually the leader doesn't need a lead) so it's not a great idea. If you have an Overton or someone like that getting an advantage over the guys who maybe don't have the support of someone like that. Money is very important in the racing world we live in now and if we give the advantage to the guys who already have the money to be out front, then we are going to eventually lose the little guys! #DoubleFileOnly!!!

I like the cone thing where you can choose which lane you want

You can pick your lane in both formate’s discussed. With the Delaware start the person running second gets to choose inside or outside and third pulls up next to him while the leader starts wherever he wants , unchallenged, all by himself. In a double file the leader chooses inside or outside and then the 2nd place car pulls up next to him. Single file is the only set lineup established strictly on the running order.

Rather have double file then Delaware or Dixie. Leader ain't earned anything till the checker flag. And yes driving in a double file sucks and really sucks at times. But it's better for fans. And actually gives the rest of competition a chance

i perfer delaware, but because the leader gets his choice of line into turn 1

  • @Nutzycop

Lane choice should b decided at a cone on track, every car gets a choice, think bout it. You could go from a 6th start position to a 3rd, like gambling, could pay off for a deeper start car to take a chance.

The truth about DELAWARE restarts is it began at Delaware Speedway in Ontario Canada by track owner Jack Greedy in the mid 1960s . The track ran super modifieds and originally the first 3 cars started single file and the 4th row back doubled up . I have several pictures to verify this

Actually they allowed the leader to “parade” out front during cautions and start by himself in the early 1900’s at events held at PA Fairgrounds. This was the birth place of dirt racing and they tried multiple starting routines including 3 wide before the double file became standardized. The Delaware restart is named after a track in the state of Delaware which was part of the original region that started all dirt motorsports1890’s. Delaware was at the for front of sport with claims to the Delaware restart format as early as 1915 at wawaset park and used in Sussex county during 1949 to accommodate track size restrictions.

Don't care what the name of the restart is, could be the name of the series or the track for that matter.
A double file restart zone box should always be coming off turn 4 the length of one car. The flagman always starts the race when the front row is in the start zone box and the lead car always restarts the race coming off the caution by firing within the start zone box, all cars behind the leader are double file and fire off when the leader fires. A race controller should be in the infield to call the restart on receiver when the leader fires, two chalk lines across the track from top to bottom to identify the back and front of the start zone box with cones or flags along the edge of the infield will help the drivers and fans know the exact location.
Any driver called for jumping by the race controller has 2 laps to give back the position or will be penalized 10 seconds after the finish of the race dropping him further down the finishing order.

Actually the original tradition and purest form of the sport had no such thing as a restart zone or box. The race commenced the instant the green flag dropped with the leader setting pace and firing first. Once the flagged waved you could legally pass regardless of the position you where in or your location on the track. This was truth for nearly a century without being problematic and the racing was much better with starts/ restarts requiring actual talent and situational awareness. It also added a variable of uncertainty as the start was dependent on the official. Restart zones, lines, cones and markers where introduced later to reduce incidents at the start and streamline the race. These only proved to over complicate the starts as a solution without an actual systemic problem. Tracks did as they always do and carbon copied other tracks rules, procedures, and policies. The same thing happened with the hillbilly logic of the redraw which defies common sense yet spread across the nation. The restart boxes only reduced on track excitement and action. The location of the box and size of the box are irrelevant. If a zone is used the lineup orientation is far more crucial to the racing. The Delaware is the answer of you want to further reduce the quality of racing for the fans while establishing an unfair advantage to the leader. A leader whom may very well have started on the front row and is no more deserving of the guy whom raced from 12th to 2nd. If you want equality and increased action to enhance fan experience and fan retention then double file is the answer. Of you want a balanced event then you utilize all three restart styles. Double file, Delaware for the last 10 or 5 Laps and auntie file depending on time constraints/ limits and excessive restart tries. The zone should be illuminated with nothing more then a firing cone at most. When the leaders fire the race is on regardless of where you are online and on the track. Racing isn’t a fire drill and Dirts not pavement!

Good tracks and series utilize All. They utilize Double file until the last % of the race. So with 5 Laps to go they switch to Delaware, single file is implemented after a certain amount of extended time, number ofc cautions or multiple restart failures. Double file is the best start for good racing and fan retention, it’s also the fairest and most equal. Being the leader doesn’t necessarily afford you the benefit of an advantage. If someone starts Pole and ran 1st the while race are they any more deserving then a driver starting 18 whom drove to second…Na.
The south and southwest has routinely and erroneously tried to claim ownership to concepts and technologies in the sport.
Dixie speedway and Dixie restarts is just another example. It’s definitely called Delaware restart however they utilized the same starting procedure long before that in the early 1900’s to “parade the leader” at tracks just outside of Philadelphia in the state of PA where the sport was birthed. We often argue about whom was first when it was neither.

Nope, Was used decades prior to that tack opening. Including at Sussex county. People have to remember that’s just the naming of the start not the origins or the first time implementing it. They tried multiple starting arrangements between 1890’s and 1950’s in PA an Delaware. This includes leader taking point, double file, single file, and triple file. We just attribute things to the most modern example we can remember within our generational constraints.
