21 Jump Street turned out good becuase it had Lord and Miller (who are both talented filmmakers) working on it. This had Dax Shepard. No wonder it's a dog.
I really enjoy edgy humor. This humor isn't edgy, it's just lazy. I felt in my soul that this movie that going to be a fetid heap of sewage from the moment I saw a short clip of the two lead actors doing an improv-based advert for the movie. Zero chemistry, zero natural humor and zero screen presence.
I’ve watched hundreds of Kermode/Mayo reviews and interactions and I swear the silence after the clip in this video is the funniest silence I’ve ever heard.
CHiPS is a film now? When are they going to stop with the 70s/80s TV nostalgia trips?More importantly, how long do I have to wait for a Magnum PI reboot?
We were at the same screening that Mark attended........and he's dead right, everyone sat there in stony silence. Never been at anything like it before or since.
....aaaaaahhh man, I have great affection for the TV series, late 70's/early 80's flick over to ITV for a bit of Jon n Punch n CHiPs - after a visit to them Duke brothers of Hazard county on BBC 1. Great Saturday night TV for a young lad. DONT RUIN MY CHILDHOOD!
I laughed at the bid about the list of injuries and you can ride a motorcycle, in truth, I have never met a motorbike owner who hasn't come off their bike. I hate these type of spoofs they are as bad as each other.
I know I’m properly late to this comment so feel free to ignore but as you appeared to genuinely ask I thought I’d give a genuine answer. The issue is that it’s just the constant punching down on people with disabilities repeatedly. Even just within that tiny clip. It’s lazy and something that happens far too often and nowadays people at least try to be more sly about it. But this clip just slaps you round the face with it. And the thing that makes it worse is that if you respond that you don’t find it particularly cool, you just get slapped with the label of stereotypical angry disabled person. (Take this from someone with direct experience of it.) So you either just have to be ok with people almost constantly making completely insensitive remarks at your expense under the guise of it being a joke or you’re miserable. That’s not to say that jokes can’t be made about disability. And it’s not like I lack a sense of humour. I make awful jokes among my friends about myself/my disability/their disabilities all the time. It’s just about not punching down, and about putting a bit of intelligence into them. And able bodied people making lazy jokes like those in the clip are the epitome of punching down. Like with the athlete joke. There are many hilarious jokes that have been made about Oscar Pistorius that aren’t lazy or facile. The program “The Last Leg” on channel 4 did them relentlessly for ages and they were brilliant. I think Mock the week did them for a while too. Anyway, sorry for the essay, it was just my response as you seemed genuinely interested in the answer.
It's actually CHIPS not CHiPs. Not sure why, but you know. Maybe they're distancing themselves from the TV show. Good thing too because the TV series was way better than this. At least season 1 and 2 were. Don't watch anything beyond that.
hahahaha I really liked this film and it got more than its fair share of laughs, mostly at the most inappropriate moments.... I guess I'm totally low brow 😂
Michael Pena's face on the poster was a selling point for me, I just love this dude, after watching the trailer however I knew this wasn't for me, MP is better than this.
If it was actually funny then it wouldn't be offensive. It wasn't funny though and the attempts at 'edgy' humour come off desperate and utterly devoid of humour.
If you're easily offended then 'CHiPs' is probably not a movie for you. It is inappropriate, sexist and homophobic, but it tries to do it knowingly, and therein lies the joke. Occasionally I did actually find those inappropriate bits funny, as is some of the physical slapstick humour, it's just a shame that the majority of it fell flat. Ultimately, I thought it lay between being not completely awful and not good enough. 2/5
People respond to stories morally/ideologically because most stories contain a certain morality/ideology, mate. In this case, the retrograde, homophobic ideology was the only noteworthy thing about this movie. Get over it.
Kermode is so left wing he refuses to laugh at anything un-pc. I thought the clip was quite funny. it would have been better actually if it had been more offensive.
The silence after the clip was considerably funnier than the clip itself.
I unfortunately chuckled twice during the clip. So now I have to go and rethink my life.
archfiendbaramos me too.
That little 'hmmm' after he said; "also the director" was great.
21 Jump Street turned out good becuase it had Lord and Miller (who are both talented filmmakers) working on it. This had Dax Shepard. No wonder it's a dog.
Imagining Mark watching the “I eat ass” scene in the cinema is considerably funnier than anything in the movie
I laughed out loud when he said
"Excuse Me would be a better title for this film"
I really enjoy edgy humor. This humor isn't edgy, it's just lazy.
I felt in my soul that this movie that going to be a fetid heap of sewage from the moment I saw a short clip of the two lead actors doing an improv-based advert for the movie. Zero chemistry, zero natural humor and zero screen presence.
When we saw the trailer last week, my boyfriend was really happy and said "That looks awful! We're going to get a rant!"
7 minute review on Chips? Looks like it could be a rant!
Look at all the people outside the window at 2:55 and how they suddenly disappear in the last shot.
I’ve watched hundreds of Kermode/Mayo reviews and interactions and I swear the silence after the clip in this video is the funniest silence I’ve ever heard.
The tone of voice that says, "I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed..."
And we all know "Dissapointed" is so much more worse than "Angry"😬
CHiPS is a film now? When are they going to stop with the 70s/80s TV nostalgia trips?More importantly, how long do I have to wait for a Magnum PI reboot?
Ben Wakefield When over 40s stop going to see them!
Ben, you finally got your Magnum PI reboot, happy now?
We were at the same screening that Mark attended........and he's dead right, everyone sat there in stony silence. Never been at anything like it before or since.
if dax sheppard is a director now hollywood is still broken. the dinosaurs who made this decision need to face an extinction crisis.
damn! I thought Mr Kermode was going to LOVE chips!
replace 'john' with leslie nielsen and the cop with priscilla presley and the husband/eyes gag becomes funny, amirite?
mark's disgust was quite funny
Disableist? That disqualifies 95% of all comedies. Dumb and Dumber, Deadpool, Austin Powers, Mr Bean
This review has made all of the irritating, intrusive advertising that has dominated my Spotify and UA-cam slightly more tolerable.

Is that the language of Swaziland? Chips=excuse me.
Still waiting for the movie versions of The Fall Guy and T.J. Hooker.
Looks like an underground cult classic in the making.
Love it when you're angry
The product placement in this movie is ridiculous.
Is it rubbish?
Fush n Chups bro
That scene sounds like it could come from a cinepanettone, and that is DEFINITELY NOT a compliment.
Came for the rant. Was not dissapointed.
I am 36 and remember Chips
they completely forgot about the fish
I was expecting a good old rant.
Every clip, and trailer I've seen make it all look incredibly lazy, and obvious.
i thought the joke in the film was alright. can someone explain the issue? was it that the athlete murdering his girlfriend too soon or something?
In the clip they were making fun of people with disabilities.

You're horribly on the money.
Didn't this genre die out with Starsky & Hutch and Charlie's Angels?
It's actually CHIPS not CHiPs. Not sure why, but you know. Maybe they're distancing themselves from the TV show. Good thing too because the TV series was way better than this. At least season 1 and 2 were. Don't watch anything beyond that.
That clip felt very much like the humour from the Naked Gun series. I liked The Naked Gun, but then again, I was about 10.
Blasphemy
hahahaha I really liked this film and it got more than its fair share of laughs, mostly at the most inappropriate moments.... I guess I'm totally low brow 😂
Seriously, the entire theater I was in was busting up at the raunchy moments
Couple mouth breathers here with combined IQs under 170. Glad u two dumb-dumbs found each other.
No surprise there then.
not trolling I found the clip funny , I do like your reviews so I'm gonna have to see this as I normally agree with you
Yes, I laughed at the clip. Didn't find it very offensive either.
That clip is actually much longer in the movie and goes on for about 20 minutes.
They sit talking back and forth over that desk for 20 minutes? Jeez.
Yeah, Um...... Oscar Pistorius jokes please don't.
Does anyone think he likes comedies?
Let's not forget it's Paparazzist
Too bad. I actually kind of like the original show.
Kermode said sex lives of the potato men wasn't funny........the miserable perisher!
Black dude clip was funny!
Friends killed the American comedy now Hollywood thinks the audience has to have every joke set up, executed then explained. Awful
coming soon.... 'Airwolf, the movie' and then 'TJ Hooker, the movie'
offensive jokes can be ok but they need to be funny
Cridps
Oh come on... you could of squeezed in something about Chips being best with Mayo somewhere in there.
OK OK, the coat check is where again?
American comedies aren't reviewing well this year
Michael Pena's face on the poster was a selling point for me, I just love this dude, after watching the trailer however I knew this wasn't for me, MP is better than this.

Definitely not funny. Perhaps mildly offensive. Wouldn't say flat out.
This is gonna be 'high' on the worst movies of the year list surely?!...
The jokes were most offensive, because they were not funny at all!
I laughed.
I disagree, just watched this film and it was funny, good charism between the leads, very funny, watch it!
How to make a worse film from an already bad series. SEE THE A TEAM
English people
Not funny or offensive - get a grip Mark.
OFFENSIVE!
Unless something worse and more offensive comes along, here's Kermode's worst movie of 2017.
Baywatch is out soon...
Mike Jarrett What movie are you talking about?

Stop being 3nhlidh
i thought that clip was funny? :D am i a horrible person now :D
Outraged at disabled jokes... closes review with disabled joke.
Not quite getting this whole SJW thing are we, Mr Kermode?
I rather hear a review of the film than preaching morality.
People respond to stories morally/ideologically because most stories contain a certain morality/ideology, mate. In this case, the retrograde, homophobic ideology was the only noteworthy thing about this movie. Get over it.
This is a boring review ...
Completely disagree, CHiPs was great!
@David Nash I liked the jokes and the characters.
Kermode is so left wing he refuses to laugh at anything un-pc. I thought the clip was quite funny. it would have been better actually if it had been more offensive.
Most of the films that Kermode dislikes are box office hits.
