Santa is Geoff 's brother-in-law but Eli is doing the voice. 😅 I love this ❤
Ooooo this explains why I couldn't find anything online about Santa!!!
You didn’t exactly get to hear a new voice for Santa. Santa was portrayed by Geoff’s brother in law, but the voice you are hearing was Eli. (The henchman in red). Apart from VoicePlay, Eli also does voice acting. The lights in their mouths are like regular athletic-type mouthpieces, but with lights inside.
I’d like to suggest another take on Oogie Boogie. Pattycake Productions (owned by VoicePlay’s beatboxer Layne Stein and former VoicePlay baritone Tony Wakim) is well known for their Villians Lair series, but the episodes can stand on their own. One of the episodes from last year was Oogie’s Got His Boogie Back. It takes place after Nightmare Before Christmas and features Oogie and his three henchman, as well as some opening and closing dialog from Maleficent.
Geoff’s wife Kathy plays one of the henchman and they have a special (unnamed) guest for Oogie. It features an original song by Layne and Tony, and Tony makes all the beautiful costuming for their videos.
Thank you so very much for all this info! You are incredible!
I don't know what regular athletic type mouthpieces are, but I will look them up!
The recommendations sound absolutely amazing and I will definitely add them to my list! 🙌
@@VetMedCorner a friend of mine used those glow mouth things for Halloween one year when she was the grinch and it glows green. And it was a lot like a retainer that the orthodontist uses only it had a little itty-bitty baby glow stick inside of it. She didn’t talk a lot with it but it was pretty impressive when the lights were low.
How cool!!
Hi Dr. Em! Love this one too! This is one of several songs they have covered from 'Nightmare Before Christmas' - What's This, Kidnap The Sandy Claws and This Is Halloween - teased in the outro! VP (and Geoff!) particularly love Halloween - Geoff's most recent was 'Jack's Lament', from this same film, VP's was 'Hellfire' from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. To answer a couple of questions, Pasquale Palazzolo is Geoff's brother-in-law, although the voice you hear is actually Eli's..! The 'flashing lights' in their mouths are little gadgets you can buy from a certain big online supplier!
No way!!! How did I not know there are more???!????!!?? I'm so excited!
Thank you so much!
Yep, absolutely more! VP has been known as the 'Kings of Halloween', too, just as they're the 'Theatre Kids of Acapella'. It might be really worth watching The Nightmare Before Christmas if you have time to do so, before watching the others, just to really get a feel of 'what they started with' vs 'what they've done with it'. Oogie Boogie Man is relatively close to the original, while Kidnap the Sandy Claws takes the original and elevates it in the unique and creative way only VoicePlay can. But, you can literally not go wrong with absolutely anything you choose, as it's all excellent. Geoff's solo work, 'Jack's Lament' - which is also from TNBC - is also an elevation of the original. And you get to touch a bit of his range and sudden octave-shifts in there.
If you like their acting (and costumes, and makeup, and singing...), you should add their cover of Drunken Sailor to your list! It's a very entertaining one, start to finish, especially if you watch the end credits scenes!
Oooo I love a good end credit scene! Thank you for the recommendation 🙌
Seconding this rec! It's an especially good one for a mental health break too--the video is hysterically funny and the arrangement is absolutely bonkers. Just great fun all around.
This sounds incredible - I will definitely have to get to it!
@@virginiathomas362 for cheering me up, I always go back to their Boy Bands in 5 Minutes, but for pure silliness, Drunken Sailor and Hall of the Mountain King are top-notch. I smile when I watch Boy Bands, but I laugh when I watch those two.
@janetdw Yes, exactly. Humor has always been super important to me because it's my main coping mechanism, but I've had a really rough 18 months or so and laughter has been kind of hard to come by. (Had one of my closest friends turn on me in the worst way, could easily have died of heatstroke because said former friend is pathologically selfish... it was a whole thing.) I'm finally starting to feel more like myself again, but even during the worst of it, I could always count on Voiceplay to make me laugh. It helped.
Just to add a little more context: everybody in Halloween Town is spooky/scary/creepy, but most of the town's citizens are actually quite nice; they like to scare kids on Halloween because it's their job, and "life's no fun without a good scare." They're led by Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, who is a sincerely good guy (if a little impulsive and overenthusiastic when he finds out about this wonderful thing called Christmas!) and Oogie, the Bogeyman, is definitely not considered a model citizen. Tormenting Santa is only part of his evil plot. It's a wonderful story, filled with brilliant music, and also one of the last great claymation films. I highly recommend it.
This sounds incredible - I think I should try find it somewhere and watch it. Thank you! 😊
I don't mind 'scary' movies if I'm in the right mood for it. I haven't watched most movies simply due to lack of time!
Consider Geoff's solo - Jack's Lament (Nightmare Before Christmas). It is absolutely stunning. VoicePlay's Halloween treat is Hellfire (Hunchback of Notre Dame). Hard to believe Disney did this evil villain, undoubtably the most wicked they have ever created.
I absolutely want to check that out, I am such a Geoff fan!!! Thank you for the recommendation 🙌
Check out Jack's Lament by Geoff Castellucci from the same movie.
Thank you for the recommendation 🙌
I always enjoy your reactions to VoicePlay!! This was my introduction to them and I was like huh?? lol Love it!!! ❤
I'm so glad you like them!!!! I'm also a huge (newish) fan of VP! They are incredible!
Those high belts, Geoff is going into a mixed voice, but it is still chest connected. The majority of his singing here was all in chest voice, though; sans the mixed belts (but that was still with some chest connection) and the E1 subharmonic he used at the end.
Thank you for clearing this up for me - it's appreciated! That E1 was jaw droppingly incredible. I've just started learning a bit about how singers are using subharmonics and it's *fascinating*
Geoff is so awe inspiring, I can't get over how incredible he is.
Pentatonix performed Creep after their unmasking on The Masked Singer. That is definitely worth watching! It’s shortened because of show time constraints, but still worth it. Pentatonix disguised themselves as sushi, California rolls, and also they did NOT sing a cappella on the show, but we Pentaholics recognized their voices behind those masks anyway after just a few notes. 😂 PTX has since released Creep on UA-cam, but it is only audio. I enjoyed it most at their unmasking.
Good to see you here again, thanks for the reaction. If you do the rest: "What's This?" is a more innocent, curious approach - the henchmen have been sent to Christmas Land and they're amazed by it. It's actually quite sweet. Kidnap the Sandy Claws is the henchmen trying to figure out how to do that... lots of physical humor and funny. In This is Halloween VP makes an unexpected visit to the Pumpkin Kings world, and then this one, they've got Sandy and brought him back to Oogie Boogie. The mood in each is very different. Personally, my favorite is Kidnap the Sandy Claws.
I really want to immediately go watch them on my own!!! I'll have to decide if I want to save them for VMC or just watch them on my own time... Thank you for telling me about all the others, they sound incredible!!!!
Fun fact: "What's This" feature J. NONE before he was an official VP member, while he is actualy a VP member in "This is Halloween" and the "Oogy Boogy Song".
J. None is amazing!!! 💪
I thought "What's This?" was sung by Jack Skellington when he first discover Christmas Town and he "...wants it for his own."
@@DravenGal True in the original. Not true in the VP version.
The three "henchmen" are Lock, Shock, and Barrell, and Layne (the percussionist with the light on his nose is Jack's dog Zero.)
I did not know the henchmen's names, nor did I understand what the light on the nose was! Thank you!!!
Voiceplay's Kidnap The Sandy Claws cover would pretty much bring an end to the running theme.
If you're a reactor who prefers to do "seasonal" songs during the specific season, you'll need to wait until next Halloween for this particular recommendation, but "Hide and Seek (Ding Dong)" is one that I would highly recommend. There are 3 specific versions that I have in mind: the version by Lauren Paley (which got attention for the next 2 versions), then Voiceplay's version with Lauren, then The Bass Gang's version, also featuring Lauren. After hearing her version, both groups approached her to collaborate with them. Hers was recorded in the stairwell of her "apartment" building (she's been dubbed "The Stairwell Siren".
This sounds incredible - thank you so very much for the recommendation!!!
Another great cover they've done is "Just Sing" (from one of the Trolls movies). It's a massive collaboration with many other a capella artists. If/when you do that one, be sure to turn on the captions. They included information about who everyone is (as well as some rather snarky remarks).
Ooooooo - this sounds like it'd be something that I would love. Thank you so much for the recommendation!!!
Hellfire and Valhalla Calling are my personal favorites from Voiceplay. You should also check out Geoff’s solo channel. Sixteen Tons is my favorite, but literally every single thing he’s put out on that channel is incredible.
Thank you for these recommendations! I will definitely add them to my list!!!
Ok Doc, set yourself for another banger of a VP song. Check out "If I were a rich man / girl" (featuring Ashley Diane) cover from Fiddler on the Roof.
I've never seen "The Nightmare Before Christmas" before (and I thought I was the only one in the universe!). I don't like spooky stuff, so I've avoided this movie, but I love the music. For your next mental health break, I recommend one of the latest four from The Bass Gang ("Arabian Nights", "Be Prepared", "Gaston", and "Friend Like Me"). "Arabian Nights" and "Friend Like Me" are from Aladdin, "Gaston" is from Beauty and the Beast, and "Be Prepared" is from "The Lion King". They're all fabulous!
These are amazing recommendations!!! Thank you!!
I am one of those people who isn't at all up to date with anything 'pop culture' and I haven't watched many movies/shows and don't know the names of most actors/singers/etc I used to be a bit embarrassed by it, but then heard about how Tig Notoro is essentially the same way and they are part of the industry!!! 😅 That made me feel better!
Geoff also has his own channel. I would suggest Sixteen Tons or Misty Mountains from the Hobbit.
Now go find one of the live performance videos and enjoy.😉
I absolutely must do this! Thank you 🙌
Pentatonix released their The Greatest Christmas Hits album a few weeks ago. Recommend the original Please Santa Please video and their O Holy Night track from it.
I was hoping for some Christmas recommendations! Thank you so much - I love PTX!! 🙌
The vocals are wonderful - duh! And that last note has had reactors falling off their chairs for years. But I don't always watch reactions to their Nightmare Before Christmas covers because I have absolutely no interest in the movie. Not a horror movie fan, at all. This puts me in the Voiceplay minority, I know. I've watched them all, and multiple times with reactors. I enjoy your reactions so I gritted my teeth and watched with you. That's always so much fun!!
I'll be here everytime you react to Voiceplay and/or Geoff!
Oh no!!! Please don't grit your teeth just to make it through!!! I totally understand that some people need to skip some for any variety of reasons and absolutely want you to do what's best for you 💜
ETA those vocals 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Nightmare before Christmas is a Tim Burton film so it is quirky as all get out. Oogie boogie I always think of as the embodiment of the fictional bogeyman. He has kidnapped Santa Claus because Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king, is interested in him. Boogie is definitely the bad guy.
Even though Boogie is a bit horrifying, the movie is not scary at all. When my nephews were seven and nine it was their very favorite movie. I always found Jack a sympathetic character. He’s locked into being the pumpkin king and he just wants to try something new and it creates total havoc.
It’s strange, but probably not a lot stranger than Willy Wonka which is really pretty dark when you think about it.
It’s worth watching just for the music alone. It was scored by Danny Elfman, previously of Oingo Boingo, who has scored a lot of movies including Batman, Edward Scissorhands, and oddly enough the theme song to the Simpsons.
VoicePlay has done four songs from nightmare and this year Geoff did one as well.
I also second the recommendation to check out the PattyCake Productions original song inspired by the movie.
One of my favorites to cheer me up is Boy Bands in 5 Minutes. My son hit his teen years when boy bands were very very popular so I recognized all but one of the songs. But they don’t only have songs from his era. It starts out with some of the boy bands I grew up with. The combination of great music and just plain fun always makes me smile. Their transitions are amazing in that one.
I'm thinking I need to try find a way to watch this movie! Now I feel like I am missing out!! Thank you for all the background info, it's helpful
ETA - thanks for the recommendations as well 💪
Thanks for your reaction to this amazing VP production. It is perhaps my husband's favorite, while I have a hard time choosing just one. They have a very impressive lineup. From early on in their collection I especially enjoy the fun Moana and Little Mermaid medleys as well as Phantom of the Opera. They have a marvelous Viking assortment, too!!
Of those, the only one I've seen is the Little Mermaid Medley. It was fantastic! I can't wait to keep exploring all the amazing stuff they've done! Thank you for the recommendations 🙌
Just dropped in to tell you that a) I adore your reactions, and while I respect your channel (and watch it for all your other content) just the way it is, I do also wish life might one day find you in a place that we could see you react more often. Watching someone delve into the VoicePlay rabbit hole is a delightful joy of mine.
b) "Flashing Mouth Teeth Guard" will get you an image of what they used to do the cool rave/party lights effect that you were intrigued by.
and c) yes that upper register we heard from Geoff was still in his chest voice. Stick around long enough and you'll get to hear his delightful head voice too! His solo work is also amazing and worth checking out, I would suggest his cover of Ed Sheeran's 'I See Fire' from The Hobbit.
This just made my day - thank you for such a lovely comment and for taking the time to write it 💜😊
I would absolutely love to get the channel to a place where I can do one reaction and one educational type video each week. For that to happen the channel needs to make enough money that I can use it to pay someone to edit... Or that I can work in clinic less and have more time for VMC...
I will keep working at it, and hopefully we get there 🤞
Voice play are the best
That's what I've been learning!!! 🙌
This is my first time here. This is one of my favorite songs that they have done. If you haven't gotten around to it you should check out their cover of the Metalica song "Nothing Else Matters". It is absolutly amazing. Or if you are wanting something to raise your sperits and make you laugh check out their rendition of "Drunken Sailor".
Welcome to VMC 😊
I haven't gotten around to either of those yet! Thank you for the recommendations!
You should do “Valhalla Calling” by VoicePlay.
that E1 bomb at the end gets all reactors......lol
It absolutely shocked me!!! 🤯 Geoff is incredible!
Great reaction. You commented that you play piano. You might try to play Geoff 's notes during the reaction to showcase his range.
I would love to do that! My Yamaha upright is in my living room and my computer/camera/headphones etc are in my office... I'll have to think about if there's a way to problem solve this!
Yay Geoff-quake reaction!
This is the best description and it made me chuckle!!!
...I might watch reactions to this song when I see them on my dash just to see the reactions at the end.
For something you missed, pop back to where Layne comes in with the line " ...to add a little spice!" And listen to Geoff's run there.
Oooooo thank you so much for that!! Something I struggle with (in the best way!) is just how much is going on in a VP production. The acting, costumes, humour, incredible voices, the arrangement... It's so much to try absorb in one pass!!!
❤❤❤❤
The flashing things in their mouths are chintzy LED-based toys that run on probably a coin battery, or possibly AAA. If you look through an Oriental Trading Company catalog they'll probably have a bag of twenty of the things for ten or twelve bucks, and if you buy them, at least half a dozen of the things will actually work. They're not particularly great in most circumstances, but VoicePlay used them especially well in this video.
By "the best I can", I think Oogie Boogie is referring to his performance in the partly-rigged gambling game he is playing against Sandy Claws.
Oogie Boogie may be the least-important-to-the-plot big-bad-villain character ever to have an entire song all about him in a major motion picture. But he's a well-designed character and captures people's imaginations, so his inclusion in the movie is clearly justified, even though it has no real impact on the story.
I had no idea that Oogie Boogie has no real impact on the movie - that made me laugh!
@@VetMedCorner Yeah. It's actually Jack Skellington who sends Lock, Shock, and Barrel to kidnap Sandy Claws, and then after they do so, Jack takes over Christmas and (of course) screws everything up. The scene where LS&B (very much against Jack's advice) take Sandy to Oogie Boogie, is a rabbit trail that is entertaining and spooky but ultimately doesn't matter to the plot. I won't spoil the ending for you, but what happens isn't about Oogie Boogie at all (he isn't even dealt with until well _after_ the climax), and if Sandy had just been tied up somewhere by LS&B, what happens at that point wouldn't be very different. Although a couple of lines of dialog would have to be adjusted or set up differently, particularly the line where Sandy tells Jack he should've listened to Sally.
